Importance of University Profiles in Choosing Med School and Writing Medical School Application Essays
If you want to have a bright medical career, You Have to invest right now. One of the investments that could bring you excellent career opportunities is your choice of med school. Getting a medical degree from a prestigious university would make you marketable. This is not a wonder, since an excellent university is expected to prepare you on how to face the real world after you graduated. It would also hone your skills and give you knowledge that would make you a level ahead of other medical professionals.
Why you have to read university profiles in choosing a med school
University profiles have the information you need to know about certain universities. The information includes a description of the university, the unique things they can offer, and what you should expect from that university. Other profiles include the popular and famous people who have graduated from the university and also a brief history of the school. Reading these profiles would help you select which school to enroll to. Even if you already have chosen a school, the profiles can serve as your guide with regard to the culture the school is known to represent. Aside from this, You Can also use the information in writing medical school application essays. This is important, especially if your goal is to create an impression that you are serious about picking the med school. Knowing more about the school you’re applying to is a proof that you’ve done your research well.
How to use university profiles in writing medical school application essays
The information you get from university profiles is valuable for medical school application essays. You can mention, for example, the interesting things a university can offer you when stating reasons why you want to enroll there. This will tell much about you. The admissions commitee will deem you responsible with your choices and highly selective of the paths you take. This will also show how much you care about the quality of education you will get.
However, in writing your personal statement, don’t make it seem like you know everything about the school. Remember that you’ll still discover more once you’re in. It’s okay to try to impress the admissions officers, but don’t overdo it. The committee may be put off by this and think that you’re wasting too much effort for something that won’t necessarily guarantee application success. You also have to keep in mind that putting too much information will eat up a lot of space on your paper. The essay should still be about you and not about the school or university.
Reading university profiles is really helpful. It is a big help in selecting a med school and even a program. It can also be used to create a positive impression to the admissions officers. Just keep in mind, however, that filling your essay with too much information about the university would create the opposite effect. Still focus on your reason for going to med school and how this can change Your Life.

Beginning Reading:A Balanced Approach To Literacy Instruction In The First Three Years Of School $32.09 A systematic, research-based guide to teaching reading in the first three years of school. It is designed to ensure that teachers are able to work with at risk' or reluctant' readers as effectively as those children for whom reading seems to come naturally. Most children learn to read, irrespective of the method of instruction. Yet up to a fifth of children struggle with reading in their first few years at school. Unfortunately, those who struggle in the early years will continue to struggle throughout their school career. Yola Center offers a systematic, research-based guide to teaching reading in the first three years of school. Her aim is to ensure that teachers can work with at-risk or reluctant readers in the regular classroom as effectively as with children for whom reading seems to come naturally. Taking an analytic approach to reading, Beginning Reading shows how children can be moved through the key stages of early reading acquisition. Each chapter includes an overview of relevant research, practical classroom strategies and guidelines for lesson planning. Center adopts a balanced view of reading instruction, stressing the importance of phonological processes at the beginning of literacy instruction, as well as semantic and syntactic ones. This supports at risk children in regular classrooms, who are provided with the maximum opportunity to develop the accurate and fluent word recognition skills that are needed in order to extract meaning from print. At last! A book that combines an overview of recent research findings and their implications for the teaching of reading with sensible and practical suggestions for classroom teachers.' Morag Stuart, Professor in the Psychology of Reading, University of London This is an excellent book. It comprehensively reviews the research literature and shows how to apply it to the nuts and bolts of teaching reading in the first few years of school. It is a must-read for teachers.' Professor Tom Nicholson, University of Auckland, New Zealand This is the book that we have all been waiting for. It is the only book that I have seen that focuses on a theoretically sound approach to the teaching of reading with a focus on children who experience difficulties in the regular classroom.' Ruth Fielding-Barnsley, Queensland University of Technology It is indeed rare when a reading scientist can explain the intricacies of reading development, reading difficulties, and reading instruction with such clarity and comprehensiveness. Most importantly, Dr Center provides a masterful synthesis of the most current converging scientific evidence available that defines what research-based reading instruction is all about.' G. Reid Lyon, PhD, National Institutes of Health, USA |

Reading the Apostolic Fathers: An Introduction $25 “”Reading the Apostolic Fathers provides a succinct but comprehensive introduction to Christian literature of the ’sub-apostolic’ age. It provides the basic background information needed to read these texts intelligently and provides bibliographical aids for further study. The work will be of special interest to students beginning their study of the history of early Christianity.”–Harold W. Attridge, University of Notre Dame”The layout of the printed page is as visually satisfying as the text is intellectually gratifying. . . . It is this kind of responsible summary and survey of a complex body of scholarship on a collection of ancient texts that will make interdisciplinary scholarship truly possible. . . . They have also produced the best kind of textbook, providing a student with a complete orientation and leaving to her the final task of reading the text.”–Karen J. Torjesen, Institute for Antiquity and Christianity of the Claremont Graduate School” |

Reading and Rhetoric in Montaigne and Shakespeare $40.49 Shakespare and Montaigne are the English and French writers of the sixteenth century who have the most to say to modern readers. Shakespeare certainly drew on Montaigne’s essay ‘On Cannibals’ in writing The Tempest and debates have raged amongst scholars about the playwright’s obligations to Montaigne in passages from earlier plays including Hamlet King Lear and Measure for Measure . Peter Mack argues that rather than continuing the undeterminable quarrel about how early in his career Shakespeare came to Montaigne we should focus on the similar techniques they apply to shared sources. Grammar school education in the sixteenth century placed a special emphasis on reading classical texts in order to reuse both the ideas and the rhetoric. This book examines the ways in which Montaigne and Shakespeare used their reading and argued with it to create something new. It is the most sustained account available of the similarities and differences between these two great writers casting light on their ethical and philosophical views and on how these were conveyed to their audience. Shakespeare and Montaigne are the English and French writers of the sixteenth century who have the most to say to modern readers. This fascinating and rigorous book explores the relationship between the work of these great writers in the light of their rhetorical training. |

Minority Status, Oppositional Culture and Schooling $56.95 This book is the definitive and final presentation of John Ogbu’s cultural ecological model and the many debates that his work has sparked during the past decade. The theory and empirical foundation of Ogbu’s scholarship, which some have mistakenly reduced to the acting white hypothesis, is fully presented and re-visited in this posthumous collection of his new writings plus the works of over 20 scholars. Ogbu’s own chapters present how his ideas about minority education and culture developed. Readers will find in these chapters the theoretical roots of his cultural ecological model. The book is organized as a dialogue between John Ogbu and the scholarly community, including his most ardent critics; Ogbu’s own work can be read at the same time as his critics have their say. Minority Status, Oppositional Culture, and Schooling examines content, methodological, and policy issues framing the debate on academic achievement, school engagement, and oppositional culture. It brings together in one volume, for the first time, some of the most critical works on these issues as well as examples of programs aimed at re-engagement. In addition to African Americans, it also looks at school engagement among Native American and Latino students. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the study of the academic achievement gap. |

”I’m not a big word fan”: An exploratory study of ninth-graders’ language use in the context of word consciousness-oriented vocabulary instruction. $49.99 In this instrumental case study (Stake, 2005), I explored students’ construction of literate identities against the backdrop of word consciousness-oriented (Scott, Skobel, & Wells, 2008; Scott & Nagy, 2004; Stahl & Nagy, 2006) vocabulary instruction in their ninth-grade English class. In particular, I examined how the two focal participants’ identity construction influenced their positioning of themselves as vocabulary experts within and outside their ninth-grade English class. Data collection included 29 interviews with 10 student participants; 8 interviews with the classroom teacher; and 36 hours of classroom observations over four months. Analyses of the data suggested that the focal participants took important strides toward ownership (Stahl & Nagy, 2006) of the vocabulary they encountered during the study and during their reading outside of school, but that their willingness to position themselves as vocabulary experts appeared to be influenced by the local, institutional, and societal contexts (Fairclough, 1995) of their lives. Specifically, Matt demonstrated expertise in the local and institutional contexts, but accepted the position of “the dumb one” assigned to him by the people in his societal context. Beth declined to demonstrate her vocabulary expertise in the institutional context, but reveled in her power in the societal context. These data suggest that, as researchers investigate how to bring what we know about effective vocabulary instruction in the earlier grades to secondary settings, we must include consideration of the complexity of adolescent identity. We must attend to the complex interplay between literate practice and identity construction, especially for young people living in the “inbetween space” (Moje, 2002) of adolescence. If students in our classrooms are going to take up the agentive positions offered by a word consciousness-approach (Scott, Skobel, & Wells, 2008), teacher educators must ensure that pre- and in-service teachers are |

”What helps us improve?”: Sixteen high school seniors’ perceptions of their growth as writers. $49.99 Writing plays an important role in academic learning, career success, and personal enlightenment. However, because of the complex nature of writing and the competing demands on English teachers’ time and attention, teaching writing is no easy task. And while a growing body of research has explored various methods for teaching writing, few studies have examined effective writing instruction from the student’s perspective. Accordingly, the purpose of this study was to ascertain what sixteen high school seniors deemed beneficial in their development as writers. During in-depth interviews, I invited participants to peruse their high school writing portfolios and discuss how their various writing experiences affected their writing skills. The students identified four primary factors in their growth as writers: (1) audience feedback, which included teacher comments, peer feedback, teacher-student conferences, and parental/external review; (2) experience with the writing process, which included experience in general, experience with grammar in context, and experience with self-analysis; (3) reading, which included reading in general and reading model texts; and (4) motivation to write, which included student interest, freedom of choice, connections between writing and other art forms, and self-efficacy for writing. |

‘Manufactured’ Masculinity: Making Imperial Manliness, Morality and Militarism $165 ‘Manufactured’ Masculinity should be considered essential reading for scholars in the humanities and social sciences at every level and in all parts of the academic world. It weaves together brilliantly the elements of the ‘manufacture’ of masculinity in the period world-famous ‘public’ school system for the privileged which serviced the largest empire, the world has ever known, at the zenith of its control and which has had a significant influence in the formation of the modern world. This authoritative study of the making of British imperial masculinity shines light on the period of Muscular Christianity, Social Darwinism and Militarism as meshed ideological instruments of both power and persuasion. This magisterial study reveals the extraordinary and paramount influence of games fields as the ‘machine tools’ in an ‘industrial process’ with the schools as ‘workshops’ containing ‘cultural conveyor-belts’ for the production of robust, committed and confident servants of empire, and templates for imperial reproduction in imperial possessions. Mainly on efficient ‘production belt’ playing fields of the privileged minds were moulded, attitudes were constructed and bodies shaped – for imperial manhood. Earlier ‘manliness’ was metamorphosized, morality was redefined and militarism at the high point of imperial grandeur was an adjunct. Professor Mangan outlines this unique process of cultural conditioning with a unique range of evidence and analysis. This book was published as a special double issue of the International Journal of the History of Sport. |

(No)Where To Go $110.99 Bentley’s research examines the experiences of five lesbian and bisexual young women who were homeless in the Lower Mainland of British Columbia, Canada. Based on key informant interviews, Bentley undertakes an intersectional analysis of gender, race, class, and sexuality in an adapted institutional ethnography that explores what the young women’s stories reveal about key social institutions. Their narratives disrupt mainstream, common sense notions about street youth that position homes and families as unproblematic sites of unconditional love and safety. Bentley’s narrators reveal that their public school experiences reflected an institutionally violent atmosphere for queer youth. The young women also discuss encountering troubling barriers to accessing youth housing, BC Benefits, police, mental health, and addictions services. Bentley’s research is essential reading for all those professionals and advocates whose work influences the lives of young women, including policy makers, teachers, school administrators, addictions counselors, health care staff, social workers, as well as the post-secondary education programs that provide credentials to these professionals. |

(Re)writing identity: New literacy practices among the Prai of northern Thailand. $49.99 This study presents the literacy practices of an ethnic minority group called the Prai who live in northern Thailand and Laos. New literacy practices of reading and writing Prai were first introduced to the Prai in the 1990's and today there are twenty adult readers of Prai among the estimated 20,000 Prai in Thailand. All readers of Prai participated in this study thereby providing a unique and comprehensive look at literacy practices in the Prai language. Secondarily, this study reaches beyond an ethnographic description of literacy practices to understand the relationship between literacy practices and Prai ethnic identity. The findings of this study show everyday literacy practices for the Prai as well as a comprehensive look at literacy practices in the Prai language. The Prai face many challenges including an educational system and a given ethnic identity that marginalizes Prai language and culture. Despite many difficulties, twenty Prai readers have adapted reading and writing Prai to home, work and Christian literacy types in creative and culturally appropriate ways. New literacy practices have influenced conceptions of language and ethnic identity among the Prai. In addition, select Prai readers use literacy to form Prai ethnic identity or to contest the identity they are given by the Thai. Conclusions show that the source of new literacy practices and the introduction of Prai literacy have influenced conceptions and uses of Prai literacy. Prai literacy is perceived to be a Christian practice and is largely relegated to the private sphere. Reading Prai is valued over writing Prai. Gender and education influence who uses Prai literacy to form Prai ethnic identity and contest given ethnic identity. As a trend, Prai women with fewer than six years of Thai school are more likely to use Prai literacy to form or contest Prai ethnic identity. These Prai readers have become local agents and ambassadors of literacy who create and sustain new literacy practices. |
