About John Markis

Mintage – The process of striking coins. Quantity coined.
Modification – A minor alteration in the basic design of a coin.
Moneyer – An authorized mint master or coiner.
Motto – An inspirational word or phrase used on a coin.
Mule – A coin struck from dies not originally intended to be used together.

Whizzing – The alteration of a coin’s appearance by use of a rotating bristled (wire or other material) brush to move or remove metal from the surface. This process generally gives a coin the artificial appearance of being in a higher grade than it actually is. Areas of a whizzed coin usually show a series of minute scratches or surface disruptions simulating artificial luster, and the buildup of metal ridges on raised letters or other design features.

Trusted Traditions :The grade is a sort of “shorthand” for describing the condition of a coin. With
experience and the aid of the appropriate books, many people can learn to grade with a moderate degree of accuracy. Few people, however, can ever learn to grade with the precision required to become a professional. The grade of a coin goes a long way in determining the coin’s value, and sometimes a seemingly insignificant and easily overlooked flaw can make thousands of dollars of difference.

About Trusted Traditions

* We always strive to provide professional and courteous service to all clients.
* Trusted Traditions is an approved dealer for the PCGS, PMG & CGC grading services. We will gladly submit your notes to either service for grading.
* A ten day return policy for all notes purchased from the website.

Token – A privately issued piece with an exchange value, but not an official government coin.
Toning – Natural patination or discoloration of a coin’s surface caused by the atmoshpere over a long period of time. Toning is very attractive, and many collectors prefer coins with this feature.
Trade Dollar – Silver dollar issued especially for trade with a foreign country. In the United States, trade dollars were first issued in 1873 to stimulate trade with the Orient. Other countries have also issued tradedollars.
Treasury Notes – Also called “Coin” Notes began in 1890 and ended in 1891. They were authorized as redeemable for silver or gold coinage and never attained popularity and they were short lived.
Truncation – The sharply cut off bottom edge of a bust.
Type – A coin’s basic distinguishing design.

About Trusted Traditions : The mechanisms involved by which the
goes from the flaccid to the erect state are somewhat complicated. We will attempt to simplify this process for easy understanding. The ability to get an begins in the upper motor neurons, or that part of the cerebral cortex of the brain responsible for erogenous thoughts. Those nerve impulses are then transmitted via the spinal cord to the lower motor neurons of the pelvic nerve complex that supplies stimulation to the erectile bodies of the
. These nerve impulses cause dilation of the capillary lakes in the corpora cavernosa to fill with blood, which is then trapped in these lakes. The result is engorgement of the
to the point where is achieved. After orgasm the capillary lakes drain and the
returns to its normal flaccid state. For all of these processes to take place the vascular, neurological and psychogenic systems must be intact. We will now discuss these systems one at a time and discuss how Andropause or Male Menopause negatively effects these systems and how PRIAXIN® can return these systems to their normal physiologic state.

John Markis Contact Shortly after, I got a call from my dear friend Steve Bromfield, he told me his wife, a local banker had gotten a $1000 bill redeemed over the counter for face value and asked if I knew of its numismatic value. Having no clue, I took the bill, scanned it, and was first to post a $1000 bill on a nonexistent venue called Rare Paper Money on EBay. In 1996, very few people had scanners, or understood e-commerce on the internet. It was that sale of that note for $1500 that triggered a success story that I embrace every day since.

The thirteenth edition of Business, Government and Society by John F. Steiner and George A. Steiner continues a long effort to tell the story of how forces in business, government, and society shape our world. In addition, an emphasis on management issues and processes allows students to apply the principles they learn to real-world situations. As always, a stream of events dictated the need for extensive revision. Accordingly, Steiner and Steiner have updated the chapters to include new ideas, events, personalities, and publications, while continuing the work of building insight into basic underlying principles, institutions, and forces.

Silencing Dissent: How The Australian Government Is Controlling Public Opinion And Stifling Debate

Silencing Dissent: How The Australian Government Is Controlling Public Opinion And Stifling Debate

$15.89

A frightening analysis of the tactics used by the Howard government to silence independent experts and commentators as well as public servants and organisations which criticise its policies. Silencing Dissent is a timely, disturbing and unnerving book'. from the foreword by Robert Manne . For over a decade, the Howard government has found ways to silence its critics, one by one. Like the proverbial frog in boiling water, Australians have become accustomed to repeated attacks on respected individuals and organisations. For a government which claims to support freedom of speech and freedom of choice, only certain kinds of speech and choices appear to be acceptable. Silencing Dissent uncovers the tactics used by John Howard and his colleagues to undermine dissenting and independent opinion. Bullying, intimidation, public denigration, threats of withdrawal of funding, personal harassment, increased government red tape and manipulation of the rules are all tools of trade for a government that wants to keep a lid on public debate. The victims are charities, academics, researchers, journalists, judges, public sector organisations, even parliament itself. Deeply disturbing, Silencing Dissent raises serious questions about the state of democracy in Australia.

Why Government Can't Save You: An Alternative to Political Activism

Why Government Can’t Save You: An Alternative to Political Activism

$14.99

“>Though the Lord relentlessly proclaimed the law of God, He did not come as a political deliverer or social reformer. He did not issue a call for changes, even by peaceful means. Nor did Jesus rally supporters in a grandiose attempt to “capture the culture” for morality or greater political and religious freedoms. Rather, His divine calling was to rescue the lost souls of individual men and women from sin and hell.>”A certain amount of healthy and balanced concern about current trends in government and the community is acceptable, as long as we realize that such interest is not vital to our spiritual lives, our righteous testimony or the advancement of the kingdom of Christ. Above all, the believer’s political involvement should never displace the priority of preaching and teaching the gospel because the morality and righteousness that God seeks is the result of salvation and sanctification.”-John MacArthur>In “Why Government Can’t Save You (An Alternative to Political Activism),” author John MacArthur illustrates through Scripture that, regardless of the numerous immoral, unjust, and ungodly failures of secular government, believers are to pray and seek to influence the world for Christ by godly, selfless, and peaceful living under that authority, not by protests against the government or by acts of civil disobedience. Dr. MacArthur will explore these areas: Christians’ Responsibility to authorityHow and why to support our leadersHow to live righteously in a pagan cultureThe principle of paying taxesJesus’ lessons on tax exemptionsThe biblical purpose of governmentThe principle and reasons for civil obedience>”To devote “all,” or even “most,” or our time, energy, money, and strategy to putting a facade of morality on the world or the appearance of ‘rightness’ over our governmental and political institutions is to badly misunderstand our roles as Christians in a spiritually lost world.”-John MacArthur>In this book find out your Christian responsibility to government and political causes.”

UFOs: Generals Pilots And Government Officials Go On The Record

UFOs: Generals Pilots And Government Officials Go On The Record

$13.29

An Air Force major is ordered to approach a brilliant UFO in his Phantom jet over Tehran. He repeatedly attempts to engage and fire on unusual objects heading right toward his aircraft but his missile control is locked and disabled. Witnessed from the ground this dogfight becomes the subject of a secret report by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency. In Belgium an Air Force colonel investigates a series of widespread sightings of unidentified triangular objects and he sends F-16s to attempt a closer look. Many hundreds of eyewitnesses including on-duty police officers file reports and a spectacular photograph of an unidentifiable craft is retrieved and analyzed. Here at home a retired chief of the FAA"s Accidents and Investigations Division reveals the agency"s response to a thirty-minute encounter between an aircraft and a gigantic UFO over Alaska which occurred during his watch and is documented on radar. Now all three of these distinguished men have written breathtaking firsthand accounts about these extraordinary incidents. They are joined by Air Force generals and a host of high-level sources-including Fife Symington III former governor of Arizona and Nick Pope former head of the British Defence Ministry"s UFO Investigative Unit-who have agreed to write their own detailed personal stories about UFO encounters and investigations for the first time. They are coming forward now because of Leslie Kean an investigative reporter who has spent the last ten years studying the still unexplained UFO phenomenon. Kean reviewed hundreds of government documents aviation reports radar data and case studies with corroborating physical evidence. She carefully examined scientifically analyzed photographs and interviewed dozens of high-level officials and aviation witnesses from around the world. With the support of former White House chief of staff John Podesta Kean draws on her research to separate fact from fiction and to lift the veil on decades of U.S. government misinformation. Throughout she presents irrefutable evidence that unknown flying objects-metallic luminous and seemingly able to maneuver in ways that defy the laws of physics-actually exist. No one yet knows what these objects are even though they affect aviation safety and possibly national security. The phenomenon has been officially acknowledged by numerous foreign governments. For these reasons and many others Kean concludes that the UFO problem must be more widely recognized and ultimately solved through an unbiased scientific investigation. The material presented throughout this landmark book is sobering unflinching and undeniably awe-inspiring and moves us toward a goal of properly addressing this worldwide mystery. From the Hardcover edition.

“For centuries, Christians have marveled at the reality of God’s healing power and divine miracles wrought through the hands of men and women who have dedicated their lives to Him. From the early Church to the twentieth century, people have flocked to these ministers in a desperate search for healing and understanding of the power of God. One such minister, known for his great boldness, was John G. Lake. He brought an air of intrigue, faith, and encouragement to hundreds of thousands of believers in the United States and abroad.Born in 1870 in Ontario, Canada, John G. Lake fought hard to survive a sorrowful childhood and make a material success of his life. Then, at the age of 37, he gave up all he had–some report he gave up millions-to seek God’s divine purpose in his life. Within a year, Lake and his family ventured to Africa, bringing a storm of God’s supernatural healing power. After five years, he left the African ministry he began, leaving a heritage of more than 1,000 preachers, 100,000 converts and countless miracles. He then returned to the state of Washington with a stronger faith in Christ and mightier anointing of God’s healing power.Shortly thereafter Lake’s Divine Healing Institute made Spokane, Washington–as documented by the United States Government-”…the healthiest city in the world”This book, which tells Lake’s life story through an authorized biography and his sermons, shows-perhaps more than any other–how bold faith like John G. The Secret File on John Birch

The Secret File on John Birch

$16.95

“Most Americans recognize the name of John Birch because of the high-profile and often controversial anti-communist John Birch Society founded in his honor. But few people know the true story of this courageous Christian missionary and United States intelligence agent, to whom countless American airmen in China during World War II owe their lives. Even fewer know the story of his brutal murder, which was covered up by U.S. government officials for years. James & Marti Hefley’s book reveals the background of this patriotic young man who was gunned down and mutilated by Chinese Communists 12 days after the war ended and who many believe was the true unsung hero of the China War Theater in World War II. Captain John M. Birch, the son of devout Christian parents, landed in China in 1939 when he was barely 22 years old. Entering language school, he became fluent in Chinese in order to begin work as an itinerant missionary. The advancing Japanese army soon changed his plans. He went on to become an intelligence officer for Gen. Claire Chennault, legendary leader of the Flying Tigers of World War II fame, who described Birch as “more valuable to me than any pilot” for his rugged, dangerous work behind Japanese lines. The truth of who John Birch was and what he stood for negates the preconceived notions many Americans may have of this World War II figure and depicts him as the crackerjack Chennault sent out to rescue American airmen who were shot down in remote areas of China. The story line takes the reader through a gamut of emotions–from the sense of security created by his warm, loving family, to his love for the people of China, where he was known as “Bey Shang We.” Birch’s strong view of patriotism, coupled with his romance with a Scottish nurse, give a sense of joyous release when victory is won in China. This contrasts vividly with the visualization of his mutilated body and the ensuing cover-up of his murder, theoretically to keep Americans from rising in their wrath and vetoing further appeasement of communism in that post-World War II China era. The file, for decades marked SECRET and placed under lock and key, was finally declassified in 1972 through the Freedom of Information Act. Through countless interviews with military officials, Birch’s officer colleagues, members of the Birch family, and other organizations, the Hefleys piece together an unprecedented look into the life of this intriguing and misunderstood war hero.”

John Calvin : Revolutionary Theologian Pastor

John Calvin : Revolutionary Theologian Pastor

$13.99

“Greater than any other Reformation era figure, John Calvin stimulated the debate, thoughts and ideas that have come to dominate Western culture and society. Dedicated to the reform of the church, and insistent on a literalistic reading of scripture, his influence radically changed the face of Protestantism and Society. Society’s abhorrence of corruption in government, and the correspondent lack of it in Western Democracies, is largely down to his work. He was the first major political thinker to model social organization on Biblical principles, one of his most important innovations being the incorporation of the church into city government. As a result, Geneva became the most important Protestant centre of Europe in the 16th Century. Calvin’s transformation of the political, social, philosophical and cultural landscape of Europe permeates the doctrine of Presbyterian, and other Reformed churches worldwide, to this day. Williston Walker produced this benchmark biography in 1906: it is still the best. Gripping, enlightening and authoritative – you will learn of a man whose theological stance and political philosophy has done much to shape modern Western culture and continues to influence millions of people in the 21st century.”

Excerpt: JFK is a 1991 American film directed by Oliver Stone. It examines the events leading to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and alleged subsequent cover-up, through the eyes of former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison (played by Kevin Costner). Garrison filed charges against New Orleans businessman Clay Shaw (Tommy Lee Jones) for his alleged participation in a conspiracy to assassinate the President, for which Lee Harvey Oswald (Gary Oldman) was found responsible by two Government investigations: the Warren Commission, and the House Select Committee on Assassinations (which concluded that there was another assassin shooting with Oswald). The film was adapted by Stone and Zachary Sklar from the books On the Trail of the Assassins by Jim Garrison and Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy by Jim Marrs. Stone described his fictionalized film as a “counter-myth” to the “fictional myth” of the Warren Commission. The film became embroiled in controversy even before it was finished filming, after The Washington Post national security correspondent George Lardner showed up on the set. Based on the first draft of the screenplay, he wrote a scathing article attacking the film. Upon JFK’s theatrical release, many major American newspapers ran editorials accusing Stone of taking liberties with historical facts, including the film’s implication that President Lyndon B. Johnson was part of a coup d’etat to kill Kennedy. After a slow start at the box office, Stone’s film gradually picked up momentum, earning over $205 million in worldwide gross. JFK went on to win two Academy Awards and was nominated for eight in total, including Best Picture. The film opens with newsreel footage, including the farewell address in 1961 of outgoing Presid… More:

There You Go Again Quotes From The 40th President Of The United States

There You Go Again Quotes From The 40th President Of The United States

$2.99

Ronald Reagan the 40th President of the United States of America, seems larger than life, in death as it seems as though his legacy, is outpacing him. During the presidential debates, when it looked, liked his Democratic opponent had him on the ropes, he would shake his head, and in his usual John Wayne like manner, and say “there you go again,” it was his signature quote, and it also gave him time, to come back with a sharp one-liner of his own. He believed in smaller government, and said during a campaign speech, “if I’m elected president, I’m not going to give you nothing,” but less government. He was a lover of words, and had a great sense of humor, his training as an actor, allowed him to be a very commanding speaker. He knew that the great actor, does not, play the part, but the great actor, “BECOMES THE PART” ~ John Milton Lawrence FAVORITE

10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America

$30

A companion book to The History Channel® special series of ten one-hour documentaries10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America pinpoints pivotal days that transformed our nation. For the series and the book, The History Channel challenged a panel of leading historians, including author Steven M. Gillon, to come up with some less well-known but historically significant events that triggered change in America. Together, the days they chose tell a story about the great democratic ideals upon which our country was built. You won’t find July 4, 1776, for instance, or the attack on Fort Sumter that ignited the Civil War, or the day Neil Armstrong set foot on the moon. But January 25, 1787, is here. On that day, the ragtag men of Shays’ Rebellion attacked the federal arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts, and set the new nation on the path to a strong central government. January 24, 1848, is also on the list. That’s when a carpenter named John Marshall spotted a few glittering flakes of gold in a California riverbed. The discovery profoundly altered the American dream. Here, too, is the day that noted pacifist Albert Einstein unwittingly advocated the creation of the Manhattan Project, thus setting in motion a terrible chain of events. Re-creating each event with vivid immediacy, accessibility, and historical accuracy, 10 Days That Unexpectedly Changed America comes together as a history of our country, from the first colonists’ contact with Native Americans to the 1960s. It is a snapshot of our country as we were, are, and will be.

Excerpt: The East India Company (also the East India Trading Company, English East India Company, and then the British East India Company) was an early English joint-stock company that was formed initially for pursuing trade with the East Indies, but that ended up trading mainly with the Indian subcontinent and China. The oldest among several similarly formed European East India Companies, the Company was granted an English Royal Charter, under the name Governor and Company of Merchants of London Trading into the East Indies, by Elizabeth I on 31 December 1600. After a rival English company challenged its monopoly in the late 17th century, the two companies were merged in 1708 to form the United Company of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies, commonly styled the Honourable East India Company, and abbreviated, HEIC; the Company was colloquially referred to as John Company, and in India as Company Bahadur (Hindustani bahdur, “brave”). The East India Company traded mainly in cotton, silk, indigo dye, saltpetre, tea, and opium. However, it also came to rule large swathes of India, exercising military power and assuming administrative functions, to the exclusion, gradually, of its commercial pursuits. Company rule in India, which effectively began in 1757 after the Battle of Plassey, lasted until 1858, when, following the events of the Indian Rebellion of 1857, and under the Government of India Act 1858, the British Crown assumed direct administration of India in the new British Raj. The Company itself was finally dissolved on 1 January 1874, as a result of the East India Stock Dividend Redemption Act. The Company long held a privileged position in relation to the English, and later the British, government. As a result, it was frequently granted… More:

Excerpt: The Bury St Edmunds witch trials were a series of trials conducted intermittently between the years 1599 and 1694 in the town of Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk, England. Two specific trials in 1645 and 1662 became historically well known. The 1645 trial “facilitated” by the Witchfinder General saw 18 people executed in one day. The judgment by the future Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales, Sir Matthew Hale in the 1662 trial acted as a powerful influence on the continuing persecution of witches in England and similar persecutions in the American colonies. As well as being the seat of county assizes, Bury St. Edmunds had been a site for both Piepowder Courts and court assizes, the latter since the Abbey was given a Liberty, namely the Liberty of St Edmund . For the purposes of civil government the town and the remainder (or “body”) of the county were quite distinct, each providing a separate grand jury to the assizes. The first recorded account of a witch trial at Bury St. Edmunds Suffolk was held in 1599 when Jone Jordan of Shadbrook (Stradbroke) and Joane Nayler were tried, but there is no record of the charges or verdicts. In the same year, Oliffe Bartham of Shadbrook was executed, for “sending three toads to destroy the rest (sleep) of Joan Jordan”. On the 27 August 1645, no fewer than 18 “witches” were hanged at Bury St. Edmunds. These trials were held by Matthew Hopkins, the self-proclaimed Witchfinder General. They were: It has been estimated that all of the English witch trials between the early 15th and early 18th centuries resulted in fewer than 500 executions, so this one trial and execution accounted for 3.6% of that total. Excerpt: The English Council of State, later also known as the Protector’s Privy Council, was first appointed by the Rump Parliament on 14 February 1649 after the execution of King Charles I. Charles’s execution on 30 January was delayed for several hours so that the House of Commons could pass an emergency bill to make it an offence to proclaim a new King and to declare the representatives of the people, the House of Commons, as the source of all just power. This in effect abolished the Monarchy and the House of Lords. The Council of State was appointed by Parliament on 14 and 15 February 1649, with further annual elections. The Council’s duties were to act as the Executive of the country’s government in place of the King and the Privy Council. It was to direct domestic and foreign policy and to ensure the security of the English Commonwealth. Due to the disagreements between the New Model Army and the weakened Parliament it was dominated by the Army. The Council held its first meeting on 17 February 1649 “with Cromwell in the chair”. This meeting was quite rudimentary, “some 14 members” attending, barely more than the legal quorum of nine out of forty-one councillors elected by Parliament. The first elected president of the council, appointed on 12 March, was John Bradshaw who had been the President of the Court at the trial of Charles I and the first to sign the King’s death warrant. The members of the first council were the Earls of Denbigh, Mulgrave, Pembroke, Salisbury, Lords Grey and Fairfax, Lisle, Rolle, Oliver St. John, Wilde, Bradshaw, Cromwell, Skippon, Pickering, Masham, Haselrig, Harrington, Vane jun, Danvers, Armine, Mildmay, Constable, Pennington, Wilson, Whitelocke, Martin, Ludlow, Stapleton, Hevingham, Wallop, Hutchinson, Bond, Poph… More:

In the tract , Milton warns against the dangers inherent in a monarchical form of government . A second edition, published March 1660, steps up the prophetic rhetoric against a monarchy. Background The 1650s took their toll on Milton, and he was already in a declining state, beginning with his wife dying during the birth of their third daughter and their son dying later in that year. As the years progressed, his blindness overtook him and he was alone. Matters were further complicated for Milton by the death of Cromwell in 1658 and the end of the English Commonwealth . The work was a final plea to try to stop the restoration of a monarchy while Milton promoted the establishment of a Republic . However, this resulted only in his being ignored and mocked. Milton began writing a pamphlet during early February of 1660 while the Rump Parliament was in session with the support of General George Monck . It seemed certain that Monck would put forth a republican form of government that Milton supported but various complications divided Monck from the Parliament during this time. On 21 February, Monck forced Parliament to readmit members that were purged in December 1648 and it seemed certain that the Commonwealth would stay in power. The tract was written in order to persuade

He managed a grist mill , and lived on a plantation named “Landing Ford” in what is now Upland , outside of Chester, Pennsylvania . His original 1683 house still stands and is the oldest English house in Pennsylvania open to the public. It is the only remaining house where William Penn is known to have visited. Excerpt: The Jacobite uprising in Cornwall of 1715 was the last uprising against the British Crown to take place in the county of Cornwall. On August 1, 1714, Queen Anne had died and George, Elector of Hanover, the son of the Electress Sophia, granddaughter of James I (15661625) was proclaimed King under the Act of Settlement of 1701. Naturally the legitimate heir James, son of James II of England, protested against this and those who believed in his rights took stronger steps than protestations, though they took a good year to get under way. For more background see “The ‘Fifteen” Jacobite rising The key characters of the Jacobite uprising in Cornwall were James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde and Henry St John, 1st Viscount Bolingbroke, they were leaders of the High Tories. Part of their scheme was to capture Bristol, Exeter and Plymouth, with these important places in the hands of the Jacobites, it was hoped that other smaller towns would join the cause. Ormond had implicit confidence in Colonel Maclean, who had been sent to Devon and Cornwall to visit prominent members of the Tory party, and others likely to support the Pretender’s cause. It turned out that Maclean was probably a spy who supplied the Ministry with names of Jacobite adherents, and measures were taken to prevent their committing mischief or folly. On 22 September, John Anstis, MP for Launceston was arrested for plotting an uprising and later on October 6 Sir Richard Vyvyan of Trelowarren MP for Cornwall and the most influential Jacobite in the West, was taken and sent to London in the custody of a messenger. On October 7 Mr James Paynter of Trekenning, proclaimed the Pretender in the market square at St Columb Major in Cornwall. At this time the representative of the Government in Corn… More:

Excerpt: A Vindication of Natural Society: A View of the Miseries and Evils Arising to Mankind is a work by Edmund Burke published in 1756. It is a satire of Lord Bolingbroke ’s deism. Burke confronted Bolingbroke not in the sphere of religion but civil society and government, arguing that his arguments against revealed religion could apply to all institutions. So close to Bolingbroke’s style was the work, that Burke’s ironic intention was missed by some readers, leading Burke in his preface to the second edition (1757) to make plain that it was a satire. Nonetheless, this work has been considered the first literary expression of philosophical anarchism by William Godwin . Satire Most historians believe “Vindication” was intended as satire, others disagree; e.g. Murray Rothbard argues that Burke wrote the Vindication in earnest but later wished to disavow it for political reasons. Many passages can be taken either as Swiftian irony or as Burke’s realization of the danger such controversial opinions may have on his career:”Far am I from proposing in the least to reflect on our most wise Form of Government; no more than I would in the freer Parts of my philosophical Writings, mean to object to the Piety, Truth, and Perfection of our most excellent Church.” “A Man is allowed sufficient Freedom of Thought, provided he knows how to chuse his Subject properly. You may criticise freely upon the Chinese Constitution, and observe with as much Severity as you please upon the Absurd Tricks, or destructive Bigotry of the Bonzees. But the Scene is changed as you come homeward, and Atheism or Treason may be the Names given in Britain, to what would be Reason and Truth if asserted of China.” Content The preface presents the occasion of the essay as a riposte to the philosophy of Henry St John,

Excerpt: The 1794 Treason Trials, arranged by the administration of William Pitt, were intended to cripple the British radical movement of the 1790s. Over thirty radicals were initially arrested; three were tried for high treason: Thomas Hardy, John Horne Tooke and John Thelwall. In a repudiation of the government’s policies, they were exonerated by three separate juries in November 1794 to great public rejoicing. The treason trials were an extension of the sedition trials of 1792 and 1793 against parliamentary reformers in both England and Scotland. The historical backdrop to the Treason Trials is complex: it involves not only the British parliamentary reform efforts of the 1770s and 1780s but also the French revolution. In the 1770s and 1780s, there was an effort among liberal-minded Members of Parliament to reform the British electoral system. A disproportionately small number of electors voted for MPs and many seats were simply bought. Christopher Wyvill and William Pitt argued for additional seats to be added to the House of Commons and the Duke of Richmond and John Cartwright advocated a more radical reform: “the payment of MPs, an end to corruption and patronage in parliamentary elections, annual parliaments (partly to enable the speedy removal of corrupt MPs) and, preeminently and most controversially, universal manhood suffrage.” Both efforts failed and the reform movement appeared moribund in the mid-1780s. Once the revolution in France began to demonstrate the power of popular agitation, the British reform movement was reinvigorated. Much of the vigorous political debate in the 1790s in Britain was sparked by the publication of Edmund Burke’s Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790). Excerpt: The Alien and Sedition Acts were four bills passed in 1798 by the Federalists in the 5th United States Congress during an undeclared naval war with France, later known as the Quasi-War. They were signed into law by President John Adams. Proponents claimed the acts were designed to protect the Catholics from alien citizens of enemy powers and to prevent seditious attacks from weakening the government. The Democratic-Republicans, like later historians, denominated them as being both unconstitutional and designed to stifle criticism of the administration, and as infringing on the right of the states to act in these areas. They became a major political issue in the elections of 1798 and 1800. There were actually four separate laws making up what is commonly referred to as the “Alien and Sedition Acts” While Jefferson did denounce the Sedition Act as invalid and a violation of the First Amendment of the United States Bill of Rights, which protected the right of free speech, his main argument on its unconstitutionality was that it violated the Tenth Amendment: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.” Jefferson more strongly argued the Federal Government had overstepped its limits in the Alien and Sedition Acts by attempting to exercise unjust powers. Virginia and Kentucky passed resolutions openly denouncing the acts; Federalist-dominated state legislatures rejected Jefferson’s position through resolutions either supporting the Acts or denying the ability of Virginia and Kentucky to circumvent them. The judicial redress for unconstitutional legislation under the doctrine of judicial review was not established until Marbury v. Mad… More:

Excerpt: Elections to the United States House of Representatives were held in 1800, concurrently with the 1800 presidential election, in which Vice President Thomas Jefferson , a Democratic Republican , defeated incumbent President John Adams , a Federalist .The elections, to the 7th United States Congress, resulted in the Democratic-Republicans picking up 22 seats from the Federalists. This brought the Democratic-Republicans to a broad majority of 68 seats, with the Federalists retaining 38 seats. Many state legislatures also changed to Democratic-Republican control, voting in Democratic-Republicans to the Senate .The victory of Jefferson and the Democratic-Republicans can be partially attributed to unpopular Adams administration policies, including the Alien and Sedition Acts , which curtailed the Bill of Rights guarantees of freedom of speech and the press .The differences between Federalist views in favor of a strong national government and Democratic-Republican views on the primacy of the states played a prominent role in the election – taxation became an issue as Southerners and Westerners rejected federal taxes levied on property.Overall results Elections by state Unlike modern day House elections, each state held its election on different days. Now, in this extraordinary new alternate history, Flint begins a dramatic saga of the North American continent at a dire turning point, forging its identity and its future in the face of revolt from within, and attack from without. In the War of 1812, U.S. troops are battling the British on the Canadian border, even as a fierce fight is being waged against the Creek followers of the Indian leader Tecumseh and his brother, known as The Prophet. In Europe, Napoleon Bonaparte’s war has become a losing proposition, and the British are only months away from unleashing a frightening assault on Washington itself. Fateful choices are being made in the corridors of power and on the American frontier. As Andrew Jackson, backed by Cherokee warriors, leads a fierce attack on the Creek tribes, his young republic will soon need every citizen soldier it can find. What if – at this critical moment – bonds were forged between men of different races and tribes? What if the Cherokee clans were able to muster an integrated front, and the U.S. government faced a united Indian nation bolstered by escaping slaves, freed men of color, and even influential white allies?Through the remarkable adventures of men who were really there – men of mixed race, mixed emotions, and a singular purpose – The Rivers of War carries us in this new direction, brilliantly transforming an extraordinary chapter of American history. With a cast of unforgettable characters – from James Monroe and James Madison to Sam Houston, Francis Scott Key, and Cherokee chiefs John Ross and Major Ridge

B. plot refers to the political enmity in 1823-1824 between Senator Ninian Edwards of Illinois and William H. Crawford , Secretary of the Treasury . Crawford had employed the unstable western banks to collect public land revenues in fluctuating banknote currencies. This policy, though justifiable, resulted in losses to the government, while he undoubtedly used his banking connections to advance his political influence. In 1823 the Washington Republican newspaper, a John C. Calhoun , published a series of articles signed A. B. which attacked Crawford for malfeasance in his relations with certain banks, and accused him of suppressing letters on the subject for which the United States House of Representatives had called. These articles were written by Edwards; while some thought he desired to damage Crawford in the 1824 presidential campaign, John Quincy Adams believed the real object was to remove William Winston Seaton and Joseph Gales , Crawford supporters, from the post of public printers. Early in 1824, while on his way west as the newly appointed Minister to Mexico , Edwards sent formal charges against Crawford to the House. He was at once recalled to testify before an investigating committee of seven,

Excerpt: The Poor Law Amendment Act 1834 sometimes abbreviated to PLAA was an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom passed by the Whig government of Lord Melbourne that reformed the country’s poverty relief system. It was an Amendment Act that completely replaced earlier legislation based on the Poor Law of 1601. With reference to this earlier Act the 1834 Act is also known as the New Poor Law. The Amendment Act was called for after an investigation by the 1832 Royal Commission into the Operation of the Poor Laws which included Edwin Chadwick, George Nicholls, John Bird Sumner and Nassau William Senior. The Act has been described as “the classic example of the fundamental Whig-Benthamite reforming legislation of the period”, based on three main doctrines: Malthus’s principle that population increased faster than resources unless checked, Ricardo’s “iron law of wages” and Bentham’s doctrine that people did what was pleasant, and would tend to claim relief rather than working. The Amendment Act came two years after the 1832 Reform Act had extended the franchise to the middle-classes. Some historians have argued that this was a major factor in the PLAA being passed. The Royal Commission’s findings, which had most probably been predetermined, were that the old system was badly and expensively run. The Commission’s recommendations were based on two principles. The first was less eligibility – conditions within workhouses should be made worse than the worst conditions outside of the workhouse so that workhouses served as a deterrent – only the most needy would consider entering them .The other was the “workhouse test”, that relief should only be available in the workhouse. A problem with this system was the urban rate payers were faced with a dramati… More:

She was purchased by the State of Alabama , converted to an armored ram, and turned over to the Confederate States Navy in the middle of 1862. Her first commanding officer was Lieutenant James D. Johnston , CSN. Throughout the American Civil War the Baltic operated in the Mobile Bay , Mobile , Alabama and Tombigbee Rivers. The Baltic was reported unfit for service in February 1863, with her deteriorating condition preventing her from joining the defense of Mobile Bay in June 1864. She was dismantled in July of 1864 and her armor transferred to CSS Nashville . The Baltic was captured at Nanna Hubba Bluff, Tombigbee River, Alabama, on May 10, 1865, and sold to the U.S. Government on December 31, 1865. Excerpt: The inauguration of Chester A. Arthur as the 21st President of the United States took place on September 20, 1881. The inauguration marked the commencement of the term of Chester A. Arthur as President. It was the fourth emergency swearing-in to take place during the 19 Century and the first to take place in New York since Washington’s first inauguration in 1789.Garfield murder On July 2, 1881 President Garfield was shot in the back by Charles J. Guiteau , who shouted: “I am a Stalwart of the Stalwarts… Arthur is president now!!” Arthur, who knew nothing of this in advance, was mortified. Eighty day crisis Arthur was cautious; he knew that there were a great number of people who thought that he had something to do with the attempted murder of the President, and didn’t want anything to do with succession until it was actually necessary; in fact, he went into seclusion, largely confining himself to his house in New York City and avoiding public appearances. Thus, for two months and 18 days, the country drifted, leaderless, hanging on every reported detail of Garfield’s health without much attention to the business of government. On September 19, 1881, Garfield died and Arthur succeeded to the Presidency. Assumption of office The inauguration of Arthur took place privately on September 20, 1881. The first time was just past midnight at his Lexington Avenue residence on September 20 by New York Supreme Court justice John R. Brady ; the second time was upon his return to Washington two days later with Chief Justice Morrison R. Waite officiating. Chapters: 1794 Treason Trials, Garrat Elections, Blue Stockings Society, Revolution Controversy, Boyd’s Marriage Index, Bangorian Controversy, Philadelphians, Graveyard Poets, Isaac Gulliver, Penny University, Pallot’s Marriage Index. Excerpt: The 1794 Treason Trials , arranged by the administration of William Pitt , were intended to cripple the British radical movement of the 1790s . Over thirty radicals were initially arrested; three were tried for high treason : Thomas Hardy , John Horne Tooke and John Thelwall . In a repudiation of the government’s policies, they were exonerated by three separate juries in November 1794 to great public rejoicing. The treason trials were an extension of the sedition trials of 1792 and 1793 against parliamentary reformers in both England and Scotland.Historical context The historical backdrop to the Treason Trials is complex: it involves not only the British parliamentary reform efforts of the 1770s and 1780s but also the French revolution . In the 1770s and 1780s, there was an effort among liberal-minded Members of Parliament to reform the British electoral system. A disproportionately small number of electors voted for MPs and many seats were simply bought. Christopher Wyvill and William Pitt argued for additional seats to be added to the House of Commons and the Duke of Richmond and John Cartwright advocated a more radical reform: “the payment of MPs, an end to corruption and patronage in parliamentary elections, annual parliaments (partly to enable the speedy removal of corrupt MPs) and, preeminently and most controversially, universal manhood suffrage.” Both efforts failed and the reform movement appeared moribund in the mid-1780s.Once the revolution in France began to demonstrate the power of popular agitation, the British reform

The commander of the BEF’s view of the Great WarThis book, written by Sir John French, concerns his period of command during the first period of the Great War. Predictably, as in many commander’s memoirs it displays much partiality as to his own actions and those of others. This is particularly noteworthy since the consensus view of the history of the time does not judge-with much justification-French kindly. At the outbreak of the war French was the obvious choice for command and his views accorded with the government establishment if not with more forward thinking military men under his command. Fast moving German offensives revealed French’s military strategy with its faith in inflexible defensive strongpoints to be hopelessly out of date. Events overtook him and were it not for Smith-Dorrien’s aggressive action during the First Battle of Mons-for which seemingly French never forgave him-the BEF could easily have been overwhelmed. French became increasing out of touch and indecisive and was replaced in 1915 by Haig. This book is far from a balanced history, but is an important account of how a nineteenth century soldier saw his twentieth century war. It also contains much factual information on the dispositions of troops and actions in what was a fluid stage of the conflict.

Excerpt: Up to 20,000 civilians killed in the aftermath The Zanzibar Revolution saw the 1964 overthrow of the Sultan of Zanzibar and his mainly Arab government by local African revolutionaries. An ethnically diverse state consisting of a number of islands off the east coast of Tanganyika, Zanzibar had been granted independence by Britain in 1963. However, a series of parliamentary elections resulted in the Arab minority retaining the hold on power it had inherited from Zanzibar’s former existence as an overseas territory of Oman. Frustrated by under-representation in Parliament despite winning 54% of the vote in the July 1963 election, the mainly African Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) allied itself with the left-wing Umma Party, and early on the morning of 12 January 1964 ASP member John Okello mobilised around 600800 revolutionaries on the main island of Unguja. Having overrun the country’s police force and appropriated their weaponry, the insurgents proceeded to Zanzibar Town where they overthrew the Sultan and his government. Reprisals against Arab and South Asian civilians on the island followed; the resulting death toll is disputed, with estimates ranging from several hundred to 20,000. The moderate ASP leader Abeid Karume became the country’s new president and head of state, and positions of power were granted to Umma party members. The new government’s apparent communist ties concerned the West, and as Zanzibar lay within the British sphere of influence, the British government drew up a number of intervention plans. However, the feared communist takeover never materialised, and British and US citizens were successfully evacuated, so these plans were not put into effect. Meanwhile, the communist bloc powers of China, East Germany and the USSR establi… More:

Tony Resnick, a former paramedic with St John Ambulance, to which the cerebral palsy sufferer[clarification needed] also belonged, is also believed to have been involved. Barkan and Resnick were never found, but are believed to have left New Zealand before Kelman and Cara were caught.
