Improve Your Vocabulary by Knowing These Latin Prefixes
English contains many words adopted from other languages. In fact, experts estimate 80% of English words originated elsewhere. The biggest influence on English vocabulary is Latin. An examination of the 20,000 most used words reveals 5,000 words contain prefixes and over 80% of these use one of only fourteen of the many different prefixes available. By learning these important prefixes, You Can improve your mastery of the English Language. You will be able to discern at least a partial meaning of words you encounter for the first time by understanding the basic meaning of its prefix.
Listed below are the most used prefixes, their meanings, and example words. To get the most out of seeing these prefixes, copy them into a notebook. Write down the prefix, its definition, and several examples of its use. You can add examples by looking for more in your dictionary. Practice using the words in your writing and speaking. Look for words with these prefixes in newspaper, magazine, or books and underline them. The more you engage the word in some way (writing, speaking, or underlining), the better you will remember it.

Although Latin is considered a “dead” language by many, it lives on in the English vocabulary. Not only do many existing words originate from Latin, many new words are constructed from Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots. New words to describe or name scientific processes or discoveries are often formed from Latin. Think of words like computer, internet, and digital radio. For digital television, you need to be familiar with both Latin and Greek, the other big contributor to the English language. You can learn more about Greek contributions to the English vocabulary in my next article titled “It was Greek to Me: Improving Your English by Knowing Greek Roots”.

Sound Sense and Rhythm: Listening to Greek and Latin Poetry $21.49 This book concerns the way we read–or rather imagine we are listening to–ancient Greek and Latin poetry. Through clear and penetrating analysis Mark Edwards shows how an understanding of the effects of word order and meter is vital for appreciating the meaning of classical poetry composed for listening audiences. The first of four chapters examines Homer’s emphasis of certain words by their positioning; a passage from the Iliad is analyzed and a poem of Tennyson illustrates English parallels. The second considers Homer’s techniques of disguising the break in the narrative when changing a scene’s location or characters to maintain his audience’s attention. In the third we learn partly through an English translation matching the rhythm how Aeschylus chose and adapted meters to arouse listeners’ emotions. The final chapter examines how Latin poets particularly Propertius infused their language with ambiguities and multiple meanings. An appendix examines the use of classical meters by twentieth-century American and English poets. Based on the author’s Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College in 1998 this book will enrich the appreciation of classicists and their students for the immense possibilities of the languages they read translate and teach. Since the Greek and Latin quotations are translated into English it will also be welcomed by non-classicists as an aid to understanding the enormous influence of ancient Greek and Latin poetry on modern Western literature. |

New Testament Greek for Beginners $89.2 “This book is intended primarily for learners who are beginning the study of the Greek Testament either without any previous acquaintance with the Greek language or with an acquaintance so imperfect that a renewed course of elementary instruction is needed. This revision, over seventy-five years since the first edition was published, retains much of the character and organization of the first edition while accommodating readers today who lack an understanding of Latin and grammar necessary for fully comprehending the original edition. For an introduction to the Greek Testament.” |

Early Christian Greek and Latin Literature: A Literary History $99.99 “Early Christian writings form a body of literature that has shaped Western culture as a whole, as Enrico Norelli and Claudio Moreschini demonstrate in this comprehensive book. The first six centuries of Christian experience impacted art and developed a philosophy that faced opposition, resolved internal conflicts, transposed itself into medieval civilization, and continues to influence culture today. Available for the first time in English, Early Christian Greek and Latin Literature highlights the special character of the gospel message, the nucleus of every Christian literary form. The earliest Christian works from the first through the fourth centuries are presented along with respected contemporary writings in the first volume. The second volume moves to the Golden Age of Christian literature. The major personalities of the time–Ambrose, Jerome, Augustine, all writers of the highest rank–are matched with Greek-speaking authors such as Athanasius, the Cappadocians, and John Chrysostom, thinkers to whom present-day Christians turn once again for spiritual direction. This two-volume edition organizes the material in chronological order. Each segment’s detailed discussion concludes with an up-to-date bibliography. It also includes a general bibliography and each volume includes an index of authors and anonymous works. Specialists in classics and medieval studies as well as general theologians, art historians, archaeologists, and other students of culture will find in this work an in-depth survey, quality scholarship, and an original approach.” |

Ancient Greek Epigrams: Major Poets In Verse Translation $11.39 After Sappho but before the great Latin poets the most important short poems in the ancient world were Greek epigrams. Beginning with simple expressions engraved on stone these poems eventually encompassed nearly every theme we now associate with lyric poetry in English. Many of the finest are on love and would later exert a profound influence on Latin love poets and through them on all the poetry of Europe and the West. This volume offers a representative selection of the best Greek epigrams in original verse translation. It showcases the poetry of nine poets (including one woman) with many epigrams from the recently discovered Milan papyrus. Gordon L. Fain provides an accessible general introduction describing the emergence of the epigram in Hellenistic Greece together with short essays on the life and work of each poet and brief explanatory notes for the poems making this collection an ideal anthology for a wide audience of readers. After Sappho but before the great Latin poets the most important short poems in the ancient world were Greek epigrams. Ad Infinitum: A Biography of Latin $9.39 The Latin language has been the one constant in the cultural history of the West for more than two millennia. It has been the foundation of our education, and has defined the way in which we express our thoughts, our faith, and our knowledge of how the world functions. Indeed, the language has proved far more enduring than its empire in Rome, its use echoing on in the law codes of half the world, in the terminologies of modern science, and until forty years ago, in the liturgy of the Catholic Church. It is the unseen substance that makes us members of the Western world. In his erudite and entertaining "biography," Nicholas Ostler shows how and why (against the odds, through conquest from within and without) Latin survived and thrived even as its creators and other languages failed. Originally the dialect of Rome and its surrounds, Latin supplanted its neighbors to become, by conquest and settlement, the language of all Italy, and then of Western Europe and North Africa. Its cultural creep toward Greek in the East led it to copy and then ally with it in an unprecedented, but invincible combination: Greek theory and Roman practice, delivered through Latin, became the foundation of Western civilization. Christianity, a latecomer, then joined the alliance, and became vital to Latin’s survival when the empire collapsed. Spoken Latin re-emerged as a host of new languages, from Portuguese and Spanish in the west to Romanian in the east. But a knowledge of Latin lived on as the common code of European thought, and inspired the founders of Europe’s New World in the Americas. E pluribus unum.Illuminating the extravaganza of its past, Nicholas Ostler makes clear that, in a thousand echoes, Latin lives on, ad infinitum. |

1 Corinthians $35 Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, one of the earliest Christian writings, had enormous influence on the formation of Christian teaching. In this Church’s Bible volume Judith L. Kovacs weaves comments from all the commentaries and sermon series written in Latin or Greek between the years 250 and 800, illustrating the historic Christian understanding of this crucial text. The church fathers gathered here include Augustine of Hippo, Irenaeus, Gregory of Nyssa, Athanasius, Origen, John Chrysostom, and many more. Preceding the line-by-line exegesis are a lucid essay by Robert Louis Wilken on how the church fathers interpreted the New Testament, an informative introduction to 1 Corinthians by Kovacs, and two chapters of general patristic commentary on Paul and on this letter. Completing the volume are several helpful appendixes and indexes. Freshly translating many passages into idiomatic English for the first time, Kovacs does not merely excerpt random quotes from the church fathers but instead produces a sustained interaction with their direct comments on 1 Corinthians. This soaking in the wisdom of the past is sure to spiritually refresh and intellectually sharpen contemporary readers who seek to better understand this part of Scripture. |

Chapters: Cicero, Pompey, Servius Sulpicius Rufus, Political Career of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Personal Life of Marcus Tullius Cicero, Writings of Marcus Tullius Cicero. Excerpt: Marcus Tullius Cicero These articles cover the Ancient Roman Comitium of the Republican era Marcus Tullius Cicero (pronounced / s s ro / ; Classical Latin : ; January 3, 106 BC December 7, 43 BC) was a Roman philosopher , statesman , lawyer , political theorist , and Roman constitutionalist . He was member of a wealthy family of the equestrian order , and is widely considered one of Rome’s greatest orators and prose stylists. Cicero is generally held to be one of the most versatile minds of ancient Rome. He introduced the Romans to the chief schools of Greek philosophy and created a Latin philosophical vocabulary (with neologisms such as humanitas , qualitas, quantitas, and essentia ) distinguishing himself as a linguist , translator, and philosopher. An impressive orator and successful lawyer, Cicero thought that his political career was his most important achievement. Today, he is appreciated primarily for his humanism and philosophical and political writings. His voluminous correspondence, much of it addressed to his friend Atticus , has been especially influential, introducing the art of refined letter writing to European culture. Cornelius Nepos , the 1st-century BC biographer of Atticus, remarked that Cicero’s letters contained such a wealth of detail “concerning the inclinations of leading men, the faults of the generals, and the revolutions in the government” that their reader had little need for a history of the period. . Cicero’s speeches and letters remain some of the most important primary sources that survive on the last days of the Roman Republic .During the chaotic latter half of the |

Excerpt: Smederevo – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In Serbian, the city is known as Smederevo (), in Latin, Romanian and Greek as Semendria, in Hungarian as Szendr or Vég-Szendr, in Turkish as Semendire. Dacians and Thracians dwelled in the area of Vinceia until their assimilation with current ethnic groups in the region, Romans conquered Vinceia/Semendria in the 1st century BC. The modern founder of the city was the Serbian prince ura Brankovi in the 15th century, who built Smederevo Fortress in 1430 as the new Serbian capital. When he became lord of Tokaj in Hungary, he planted vines from Smederevo on his estates there; from these came the famous Tokaji white wine. Smederevo was the residence of Brankovi and the capital of Serbia from 1430 until 1439, when it was conquered by the Ottoman Empire after a siege lasting two months. In 1444, in accordance with the terms of the Peace of Szeged between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottoman Empire the Sultan returned Smederevo to ura Brankovi, who was allied to John Hunyadi. On 22 August 1444 the Serb prince peacefully took possession of the evacuated town. When Hunyadi broke the peace treaty, ura Brankovi remained neutral. Serbia became a battleground between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Ottomans, and the angry Brankovi captured Hunyadi after his defeat at the Second Battle of Kosovo in 1448. Hunyadi was imprisoned in Smederevo fortress for a short time. Inside Smederevo FortressIn 1454 Sultan Mehmed II besieged Smederevo and devastated Serbia. The town was liberated by Hunyadi. In 1459 Smederevo was again captured by the Ottomans after the death of Brankovi. The town became a Turkish border-fortress, and played an important part in OttomanHungarian Wars until 1526. Because of its strategic location,… More: |

From there he seems to have moved to Rome , where he gained the favour of the emperor Marcus Aurelius , to whom he dedicated a work on prosody . No further biographical particulars are known.Works He was held in very high esteem by subsequent grammarians; Priscian describes him as maximus auctor artis grammaticae (“the greatest creator of grammatical art”). In addition, there are ongoing debates over which works were written by him and which were not. Some works by lesser-known figures are known to have been reattributed to Herodian, presumably in order to |

20th Century In Lgbt History $28.11 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The word homophile is an alternative to the word for ‘homosexual’ or ‘gay’. The homophile movement also refers to the gay rights movement of the 1950s and ’60s. The term homophile is favoured by some because it emphasizes love (“-phile” from Greek ) rather than sex. Coined by the German astrologist, author and psychoanalyst Karl-Günther Heimsoth in his 1924 doctoral dissertation “Hetero- und Homophilie,” the term was in common use in the 1950s and 1960s by homosexual organizations and publications; the groups of this period are now known collectively as the homophile movement. The term homophile began to disappear with the emergence of the Gay Liberation movements of the late 1960s and early 1970s, replaced by a new set of terminology such as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender, although some of the homophile groups survived until the 1980s, 90s and even the present day. In an 1896 article on vivisection in “Proceedings of the American Microscopical Society” Pierre A. Fish used the term “homophiles” in a hybrid way (‘homo’ in this case being latin for ‘man’), denoting advocates of vivisection – as opposed to antivivisectionists whom he called ‘zoophiles’. This usage has not been widely acknowledged. After the gains made by the homosexual rights movements of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the vibrant homosexual subcultures of the 20s and 30s became silent as war engulfed Europe. Germany, the traditional home of such movements (Scientific-Humanitarian Committee) and activists (Magnus Hirschfeld, Ernst Burchard, Karl Heinrich Ulrichs or Max Spohr), went from being the best place in Europe to be gay, lesbian or transgendered, to the worst, under the Nazis. The Swiss journal Der Kreis (“the circle”) was the only homosexual publication… More: |

9th-Century Christian Clergy $14.14 Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Chapters: Anastasius Bibliothecarius, Gottschalk of Orbais, Fedelmid Mac Crimthainn, Diarmait of Iona, Adalard of Corbie, Florus of Lyon, Odo of Glanfeuil, Ailbhe of Ceann Mhara, Louis, Hugh, Son of Charlemagne. Excerpt: Anastasius Bibliothecarius (c. 810-c. 878) was Head of archives (bibliothecarius, literally “librarian”) and antipope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was also active as an author, and translated Greek language works into Latin. Among them was the biography of St. John the Merciful, which he dedicated to Nicholas I. The successor of Nicholas, Pope Adrian II (867-872), appointed Anastasius bibliothecarius (Head of archives) of the Roman Church, an important office at the Lateran Palace that gave him further influence at the papal Court. In 869 he was sent by Louis II, Holy Roman Emperor as envoy to Constantinople, with two men of high rank in the Frankish Empire, to negotiate a marriage between Leo VI the Wise, oldest son of the Byzantine emperor Basil I, and Louis’s only child, Ermengard. When the envoys arrived at Constantinople, the Fourth Council of Constantinople was still in session, and Anastasius, who atte… More: |
