Buenos Aires City of Entertaining Activities
Traveling to the capital of Argentina promises a great array of activities and places to see and feel. Characterized for being one of the most cosmopolitan, dynamic and interesting cities of South America, their streets are filled with places where eating, drinking and having fun are guaranteed.
In a country renowned for its great literary authors, Buenos Aires is the perfect city for hours of interesting sightseeing, looking for great books. This passion for culture and good reading, manifests it self in multiple places, like Palermo and the Corrientes Avenue, book stops, and literary tours that give the casual traveler useful and interesting information regarding some of Argentina’s more illustrious writers, like Jorge Luis Borges of world fame.
Walking the streets of Buenos Aires can mean stopping by the classic Barrio de la Boca and el Caminito, a museum street that acquires its name thanks to the Tango song of the same name, composed in 1926 by the Argentinean musicians Juan de Dios Filiberto and Gabino Coria Peñaloza. In this painteresque place You Can find local craftsmanship’s and other products related to the arts field. Also, during the week –preferably on Sundays- you can see people doing some exhibition Tango –the typical dance of Argentina and Uruguay- that brings to the experience a novel and attractive South American charm.
The neighborhood is also known for housing La Bombonera Stadium, of the football Club, Boca Juniors, one of the most popular teams in Argentina. This last venue is almost mandatory for football fans and enthusiasts, just to get a sense of the passion that the people in this country have for this sport.
Buenos Aires also has a musically and culturally rich night life with many bars and wonderful restaurants where you can taste fabulous meat barbecues and the best selection Argentinean and South American wines. Some of the most interesting bars in the city are the El Federal, located in the San Telmo neighborhood with its characteristic traditional and antique decoration. This locale, -that has been in operation since 1864-, includes a massive collection of books in an environment surrounded by paintings, classic furniture and old machinery. Then there is the preferred site by Argentinean celebrities and socialites, the Milion, located in an elegant mansion on the Recoleta district with marble staircases and seductive terraces.
Enjoying Buenos Aires necessarily involves eating refined and tasty dishes of great quality. After visiting the Casa Gardel Museum for a look at the life and work of the this famous Tango composer, or the Evita Museum, you can stop by the Casa Cruz restaurant, located in Uriarte street for a specialized cuisine from the zone, known as Porteña. There is also the Chila, a restaurant of author cuisine with french inspiration that has garnered multiple awards, making of this place located on Puerto Madero a safe bet for excellent dishes. Other options of great quality include the exclusive Piegari Ristorante in the Recoleta –italian cuisine and seafood- or the Guerrin pizzeria located in Avenida Corrientes.

Lô Borges $15.18 Reminiscent of the Clube da Esquina album he made the same year with Brazilian superstar Milton Nascimento, Lô Borges’ 1972 solo debut proves that his influence on Nascimento was quite strong. The recording is texturally lush and dreamy, at times urgent and bizarre, and filled with the fantastic and intricate guitar playing one would expect of Borges after hearing his dazzling work with Nascimento. His vocal arrangements are lavish, often similar to the vocal qualities of George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass, and his instrumental arrangements are just plain confounding. Piano phrases mash in and out of control over the unorthodox yet clever progressions; polyphonic percussion interlocks with jazzed-out organ lines and thoughtful, melodic bass work. Occasionally, a string section will fall into place, fulfilling the album’s decorative quota, and the whole construction becomes watertight. It is truly stunning to pick apart the timbre of individual instruments and realize how necessary and meticulous each part is in the overall presentation. Borges is one of those arrangers who can build up a music bed with miles of depth and construct a wall of sound, yet keep the overall concept in crisp focus. No layer of the instrumentation seems to ever become obscured by another, nor does any part seem unnecessary, and so much is going on rhythmically and melodically that it demands full attention. The remarkable quality of Brazil’s musical culture to seamlessly integrate as many outside influences into one place is well represented here. Many western textures, such as soul, rock, jazz, and pop, are absorbed into the picture with fervor and grace rarely executed in the world of western music. “Não Foi Nada” illustrates this particularly well, but the melting-pot sentiment echoes through all of Borges’ performances here. ~ Gregory McIntosh, Rovi |

A Child’s Garden Of Verses (Illustrated Edition) $12.99 Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson (1850-1894), was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of Neo-romanticism in English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov. Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson’s popularity and allow him a place in the Western canon. Stevenson was a celebrity in his own time, but with the rise of modern literature after World War I, he was seen for much of the 20th century as a writer of the second class, relegated to children’s literature and horror genres. His works include: An Inland Voyage (1878), Familiar Studies of Men and Books (1882), New Arabian Nights (1882), Kidnapped (1886), The Merry Men and Other Tales and Fables (1887), Memories and Portraits (1887), Memoir of Fleeming Jenkin (1887), The Black Arrow (1888), and Master of Ballantrae: A Winter’s Tale (1889). |

A Companion to Latin American Literature and Culture (Blackwell Companions to Literature and Culture Series) $214.95 A Companion to Latin American Literature and Culture reflects the changes that have taken place in cultural theory and literary criticism since the latter part of the twentieth century.Written by more than thirty experts in cultural theory, literary history, and literary criticism, this authoritative and up-to-date reference places major authors in the complex cultural and historical contexts that have compelled their distinctive fiction, essays, and poetry. This allows the reader to more accurately interpret the esteemed but demanding literature of authors such as Jorge Luis Borges, Mario Vargas Llosa, Octavio Paz, and Diamela Eltit. Key authors whose work has defined a period, or defied borders, as in the cases of Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, César Vallejo, and Gabriel García Márquez, are also discussed in historical and theoretical context. Additional essays engage the reader with in-depth discussions of forms and genres, and discussions of architecture, music, and film. This text provides the historical background to help the reader understand the people and culture that have defined Latin American literature and its reception. A Companion to Modern Spanish American Fiction $174.57 With such figures as Jorge Luis Borges, Miguel ngel Asturias and Gabriel Garcia Marquez (both the latter Nobel Prizewinners) Spanish American fiction is now unquestionably an integral part of the mainstream of Western literature. This book draws on the most recent research in describing the origins and development of narrative in Spanish America during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, tracing the pattern from Romanticism and Realism, through Modernismo, Naturalism and Regionalism to the Boom and beyond. It shows how, while seldom moving completely away from satire, social criticism and protest, Spanish American fiction has evolved through successive phases in which both the conceptions of the writer’’s task and presumptions about narrative and reality have undergone radical alterations. DONALD SHAW holds the Brown Forman Chair of Spanish American literature in the University of Virginia. |

A Reader on Reading $27.5 In this major collection of his essays, Alberto Manguel, whom George Steiner has called “the Casanova of reading,” argues that the activity of reading, in its broadest sense, defines our species. “We come into the world intent on finding narrative in everything,” writes Manguel, “landscape, the skies, the faces of others, the images and words that our species create.” Reading our own lives and those of others, reading the societies we live in and those that lie beyond our borders, reading the worlds that lie between the covers of a book are the essence of A Reader on Reading. The thirty-nine essays in this volume explore the crafts of reading and writing, the identity granted to us by literature, the far-reaching shadow of Jorge Luis Borges, to whom Manguel read as a young man, and the links between politics and books and between books and our bodies. The powers of censorship and intellectual curiosity, the art of translation, and those “numinous memory palaces we call libraries” also figure in this remarkable collection. For Manguel and his readers, words, in spite of everything, lend coherence to the world and offer us “a few safe places, as real as paper and as bracing as ink,” to grant us room and board in our passage. |

A Universal History of Iniquity (Penguin Classics Series) $12 In his writing, Borges always combined high seriousness with a wicked sense of fun. Here he reveals his delight in re-creating (or making up) colorful stories from the Orient, the Islamic world, and the Wild West, as well as his horrified fascination with knife fights, political and personal betrayal, and bloodthirsty revenge. Spark-ling with the sheer exuberant pleasure of story-telling, this collection marked the emergence of an utterly distinctive literary voice. |

Across the Plains $24.93 New – Robert Louis (Balfour) Stevenson (1850-1894), was a Scottish novelist, poet, and travel writer, and a leading representative of Neo-romanticism in English literature. He was greatly admired by many authors, including Jorge Luis Borges, Ernest Hemingway, Rudyard Kipling and Vladimir Nabokov. Most modernist writers dismissed him, however, because he was popular and did not write within their narrow definition of literature. It is only recently that critics have begun to look beyond Stevenson |
