Charles Dickens Novel As The Reflection Of The Social Change In British Victorian Period

Charles Dickens was a famous writer when he was alive and he is now one of the best-known and most widely read of English writers. Dickens wrote from comedy to social criticism and from history to journalism. The history of Dickens’s life that made him wrote many novels about social life and criticized of Victorian. His poor head for finances in his childhood be an inspiration for him to wrote about the lower classes and the criticized for government who did not care with people. Dickens wrote about religion and fiction. Dickens spent much time to traveling and campaigning against many of the social evils of his time. He was very concern with the problems of the society change in that time.

Charles Dickens wrote thirteen novels between Sketches by Boz (1836) and The Mystery of Edwin Drood, published in the year of his death, 1870. In Oliver Twist (1837-8) and Nicholas Nickleby (1838-9), he wrote of the social problem of young boy named Oliver. Oliver had bad treatment in an institution for the poor and working for criminals. Here, Dickens wanted education for all children, and shown his readers the kind of problems children had in the cities, where poor people had no chance to share in the success of the nation. He often tells the stories of victims, and made his reader aware of the problem of Victorian society.

Moreover, Dickens tried to write novels, which criticized society in a more general way. David Copperfield (1849-50) was his most positive novel about growing up. The hero, David, became the kind of success, which Victorian admired- he is rich, he marries, and a general sense of happy ending is given. This novel was based in part of his childhood and his success. However, when he came to write another partly autobiographical story, Great Expectations (1860-1), there is a sense that the ending will not be so happy: there is a feeling of disappointment, that hopes will not be met, and that the earlier ideals have been false. Then in Hard Times (1854), Dickens shows the worst sides of the new industrial society of the Mindlands of England and most clearly shows how the poor lived.. Industry is contrasted with the freedom of the individual and the whole novel presents a very pessimistic picture of the nation. In addition, in A Christmas Carol, it shows the traditional picture of Victorian family values, and helped to create the image of Christmas as the most important family festival.

Bleedout: A Novel

Bleedout: A Novel

$9.39

"Watch your back most carefully when someone you trust steps behind you." Even after Hugh Freyl lost his sight he was invincible. But late one night, in the library of the elite law firm that bears his name, he was beaten to death. The obvious suspect is David Marion, a convicted killer from the inner city. Hugh, the scion of the richest and most influential family in Springfield, Illinois, had orchestrated David’s release from prison and outraged his family and friends by making the young man his protégé. Now, in the eyes of Hugh’s circle, David’s criminal past fits him perfectly for the murderer’s role. It makes no sense for David to have killed his teacher, liberator and friend. Yet, if he did not, who did? With no one to stand up for him, and armed only with the criminal skills he honed in prison and the savage fury of a cornered man, David must fight alone. But is he battling to prove his innocence or to hide his guilt? In Springfield nothing is what it seems, and the more David struggles to clear himself, the closer he gets to the snake pit of ambition and greed poisoning the social and political fabric of the city. Was Hugh all he appeared to be? Who was he protecting and why? Could this most upright of men have involved his firm in shady financial dealings? To find the answers, David must confront his violent past and the uncertainty of his future. Unraveling with startling reversals and visceral detail and as mesmerizing as the work of Scott Turow, Bleedout is a tense, psychological tour de force. It is charged with insights into betrayal and jealousy so stark that they call into question the values and presumptions by which we judge others guilty and ourselves innocent.

He drinks stem-cell-derived blood from cleverly packaged and marketed juice boxes. He is, in short, a vampire. But since his wildly successful scheme to turn as many mortals as possible into vampires — "vamp" them rather than kill them — resulted in a new immortal majority, Marty finds little of interest to fill his countless days. From the deeply imaginative mind of David Sosnowski — who gave us the critically acclaimed junkie-angel classic Rapture — bursts this neo-vampire novel studded with pint-size vampires known as "screamers" (children who were vamped and are none too happy about it); priest vampires who helped convert their flock into lifetime members of the Church; stripper vampires who lap-danced their way into customers’ veins; and one very small, very outspoken human girl. When Marty decides to end his endless life of soul-crushing ennui — call it vampire affluenza — a three-foot blond obstacle is thrown in his path: Isuzu Trooper Cassidy, a refugee from a human hunting preserve. At first he thinks "midnight snack," but before the sun comes up, Isuzu is the one snacking on his prized cereal collection as she charms him into staying undead long enough to raise her in a world rife with danger and almost entirely populated by vampires yearning for the taste of real human blood. The critics applauded David Sosnowski when Rapture was published, saying he "staked out a patch of turf somewhere between Franz Kafka and Douglas Adams." Now with Vamped, Sosnowski takes on a time-honored genre and breathes new life into it by turning Martin Kowalski’s vampire world upside down and telling his story with rich, masterful, and frequently hilarious prose.

Number9Dream is the international literary sensation from a writer with astonishing range and imaginative energy an intoxicating ride through Tokyo’s dark underworlds and the even more mysterious landscapes of our collective dreams. David Mitchell follows his eerily precocious, globe-striding first novel, Ghostwritten , with a work that is in its way even more ambitious. In outward form, Number9Dream is a Dickensian coming-of-age journey: Young dreamer Eiji Miyake, from remote rural Japan, thrust out on his own by his sister’s death and his mother’s breakdown, comes to Tokyo in pursuit of the father who abandoned him. Stumbling around this strange, awesome city, he trips over and crosses through a hidden destiny or just monstrously bad luck a number of its secret power centers. Suddenly, the riddle of his father’s identity becomes just one of the increasingly urgent questions Eiji must answer. Why is the line between the world of his experiences and the world of his dreams so blurry? Why do so many horrible things keep happening to him? What is it about the number 9? To answer these questions, and ultimately to come to terms with his inheritance, Eiji must somehow acquire an insight into the workings of history and fate that would be rare in anyone, much less in a boy from out of town with a price on his head and less than the cost of a Beatles disc to his name. Denver: A Novel

Denver: A Novel

$14.99

By the 1920s, Denver had outgrown its frontier-town beginnings. But for some, life was still as perilous as the surrounding terrain. The insidious influence of the Ku Klux Klan was reaching its peak, and those who stood in its path feared for their safety. Denver is the saga of a family caught in this tempestuous time. To newspaperman Tom Hastings, his writing matters more than anything. As the book opens, President Harding has just died, and Hastings finds himself drawn toward the biggest story of his career. But his wife resents his allegiance to the newspaper and his Jewish stepfather is a target for the supremacist Kleagles—two good reasons not to persist in his pursuit of the story: that and the KKK has penetrated the highest levels of government in the state. Some eighty characters surround Tom Hastings: there’s his half-sister, the quiet, passionate Jewess Anna Kohl; David Waldo, a socialist and friend to Jack London; Willie Brown, a rising political star torn between his desire for elective office and the love of his life; and Marvel Millette, a Nellie Bly–like reporter in whom Tom Hastings finally meets his match. John Dunning creates flesh-and-blood figures, not only of these fictional characters but of historical personages as well. There is John Galen Locke, the Grand Dragon of the KKK, and Fred Bonfils, a founder of a newspaper dynasty built on tabloid sensationalism; President Calvin Coolidge, too, makes a gruff appearance. Denver is a panoramic novel as vibrant as the city for which it is named, as tumultuous as the era in which it is set. John Dunning never lets the reader lose sight of the men and women who live their lives on the pages of this saga. While crosses burst into angry flames and menacing droves of white-robed Klansmen gather against the torch-lit skies, passions, fears, joys, and hates are played out in Denver in the 1920s.

Consolation: A Novel

Consolation: A Novel

$12.19

"There is a vast part of this city with mouths buried in it . . . . Mouths capable of speaking to us. But we stop them up with concrete and build over them and whatever it is they wanted to say gets whispered down empty alleys and turns into wind. . . ." These are among the last words of Professor David Hollis before he throws himself off a ferry into the frigid waters of Lake Ontario. A renowned professor of "forensic geology " David leaves in his wake both a historical mystery and an academic scandal. He postulated that on the site where a sports arena is about to be built lie the ruins of a Victorian boat containing an extraordinary treasure: a strongbox full of hundreds of never-seen photographs of early Toronto a priceless record of a lost city. His colleagues however are convinced that he faked his research materials. Determined to vindicate him his widow Marianne sets up camp in a hotel overlooking the construction site watching and waiting for the boat to be unearthed. The only person to share her vigil is John Lewis fiancé to her daughter Bridget. An orphan who had come to love David as his own father John finds himself caught in a struggle between mother and daughter-all the while keeping a dark secret from both women. Interwoven into the contemporary story is another narrative set in 1850s: the tale of Jem Hallam a young apothecary struggling to make a living in the harsh new city so he can bring his wife and daughters from England. Crushed by ruthless competitors he develops an unlikely friendship with two other down-on-their-luck Torontonians: Samuel Ennis a brilliant but dissolute Irishman and Claudia Rowe a destitute widow. Together they establish a photography business and set out to create images of a fledgling city where wooden sidewalks are put together with penny nails where Indians spear salmon at the river mouth and the occasional bear ambles down King Street where department stores display international wares and fine mansions sit cheek-by-jowl with shantytowns. Consolation moves back and forth between David Hollis’s legacy and Jem Hallam’s struggle to survive ultimately revealing a mysterious connection between the two narratives. Exquisitely crafted and masterfully written Michael Redhill’s superlative book reveals how history is often transformed into a species of fantasy and how time alters the contours of even the things we hold most certain. As complex and layered as the city whose story it tells Consolation evokes the mysteries of love and memory and what suffering the absence of the beloved truly means. From the Hardcover edition.

Bitterroot: A Novel

Bitterroot: A Novel

$7.79

Following his acclaimed bestseller Purple Cane Road James Lee Burke returns with a triumphant tour de force. Set in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana home to celebrities seeking to escape the pressures of public life as well as to xenophobes dedicated to establishing a bulkhead of patriotic paranoia Burke’s novel features Billy Bob Holland former Texas Ranger and now a Texas-based lawyer who has come to Big Sky Country for some fishing and ends up helping out an old friend in trouble. And big trouble it is not just for his friend but for Billy Bob himself — in the form of Wyatt Dixon a recent prison parolee sworn to kill Billy Bob as revenge for both his imprisonment and his sister’s death both of which he blames on the former Texas lawman. As the mysteries multiply and the body count mounts the reader is drawn deeper into the tortured mind of Billy Bob Holland a complex hero tormented by the mistakes of his past and driven to make things — all things — right. But beneath the guise of justice for the weak and downtrodden lies a tendency for violence that at times becomes more terrifying than the danger he is trying to eradicate. As USA Today noted in discussing the parallels between Billy Bob Holland and Burke’s other popular series hero David Robicheaux "Robicheaux and Holland are two of a kind white-hat heroes whose essential goodness doesn’t keep them from fighting back. The two series describe different landscapes but one theme remains constant: the inner conflict when upright men are provoked into violence in defense of hearth home women and children. There are plenty of parallels. Billy Bob is an ex-Texas Ranger; Dave is an ex-New Orleans cop. Dave battles alcoholism and the ghosts of Vietnam; Billy Bob actually sees ghosts including the Ranger he accidentally gunned down….But most of all both protagonists hold a vision of a pure and simple life." In Bitterroot with its rugged and vivid setting its intricate plot and a set of remarkable unforgettable characters and crafted with the lyrical prose and the elegiac tone that have inspired many critics to compare him to William Faulkner James Lee Burke has written a thriller destined to surpass the success of his previous novels.

Another man might curse his luck at finding that his potential dream woman is a rival’s wife, but at this point, Stephen would expect nothing else. L.I.E.: A Novel

L.I.E.: A Novel

$8.59

At once mordantly funny and achingly sad, L.I.E. is a soul map for modern suburbia." –Sheri Holman, author of The Dress Lodger Long Island, New York, 1987: Harlan Kessler–raised in Medford, a product of blue-collar Suffolk County, of housing developments and concrete strip malls–graduates from high school. He hangs out, he parties, he plays guitar for the Dayglow Crazies (the local rock-and-roll phenomenon), and he struggles diligently to lose his virginity. He doesn’t think about the future much. The Long Island Expressway (L.I.E.) cleaves the landscape, permitting passage west, to the tonier climes of Nassau County and New York City, but to Harlan, this seems like an impossible journey, something beyond his Long Island birthright. And what’s worse, evidence is accumulating that Harlan may not exist at all, that he may merely be a character in someone else’s story, a fleeting thought in the mind of God. L.I.E. follows Harlan, his family, and his friends through two years of love, sex, death, betrayal, salvation, and enlightenment. In ten intimately interwoven stories, in prose that swings fluidly from gritty realism to heightened metafiction, David Hollander maps an American landscape that is at once vividly familiar and highly exotic, creating an unforgettable portrait of the passage to adult-hood and the search for identity, certain to resonate with legions of readers. By turns dark, funny, raw, and elegant, L.I.E. is the striking debut of a singular voice. The last wisps of afternoon streak and evaporate into blue-gray dusk, submersing Long Island in twilight. Harlan and Rik Giannati sit on the curb outside Rik’s house, precisely 211 yards northeast of Harlan’s house, the distance punctuated by no fewer than fourteen subtly distinct houses of three ilks: the square, steeple-roofed Granada; the split-level LaSalle; the two-story, three-bedroom Monte Carlo. This last model was the choice of Kessler and Giannati alike some ten years ago when they, too, were assimilated in the mass exodus from Queens to Suffolk County that had gripped the hearts and genitals of so many. The streetlamps began to glow along Rustic Avenue, a cold blue flicker spaced at even intervals, like isolated members of the same species, each shivering in its cage of frosted glass. –From L.I.E.

Emma expects David to say goodbye, but David enjoys surprises. At their beautiful, impromptu wedding at a historic inn, Emma and David promise to love and cherish each other for the rest of their lives. The only shadow over Emma’s happiness is cast by her stepfather, who is furious that David failed to sign a prenuptial agreement. As the newlyweds set off for their honeymoon at an idyllic cabin in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, Emma has no idea that her life is about to turn into a wife’s worst nightmare. With keen psychological insight and a storytelling style that thrills and surprises, Patricia MacDonald explores the dark, violent impulses that compel people to betray the one person they supposedly love most. Gripping and emotionally powerful, Married to a Stranger evidences Patricia MacDonald writing at the height of her celebrated powers.

David Copperfield or The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery (which he never meant to publish on any account) is a novel by Charles Dickens, first published in 1850. Like all except five of his works, it originally appeared in serial form (published in monthly installments). Many elements within the novel follow events in Dickens' own life, and it is probably the most autobiographical of all of his novels. It is also Dickens' "favorite child." Love Is The Drug: A Novel

$6.29

Wonderfully empathic, smartly comic, and wickedly insightful, this captivating debut novel maps the progress of an unforgettable young woman endeavoring to mend a broken heart and find salvation. "Hello, my name is Tyler Tracer and I am falling apart. I am twenty-four years old, and I have no ability whatsoever to choose an occupation or a hair color." Meet Tyler, the singularly irresistible and straight-talking heroine of Sarahbeth Purcell’s touching first novel. An incurable romantic, Tyler’s chief obsessions include music, list-making — and David, the man who broke her heart. Despite an exhaustively detailed list of reasons for why she should just forget about David once and for all — including (but by no means limited to) chronic illness, terminal self-absorption, and geographical inaccessibility — Tyler remains hopelessly hooked on him. Hence the wild ride she embarks upon in the wake of her father’s death, a ride that takes her from her hometown in Tennessee to sunny Los Angeles, all in hopes of saving David from his ominous take on life. This hilarious and dark cross-country expedition finds our young heroine negotiating the universally perilous terrain of sex, love, and relationships with uncommon verve, wit, and more than a little recklessness. Along the way, Tyler discovers, among other things, the uniquely redemptive powers of roadkill, the fact that enduring love tends to blossom in the most unexpected and unlikeliest places, and, above all, that nothing can stop her from making her own rules and mapping out her own life. Not even herself. A joyous triumph of a debut to which readers will respond with a sense of instant recognition, Sarahbeth Purcell’s Love Is the Drug spins a story of bold living and loving that crackles with energy and innovation.

Once among the city’s most envied merchants, Miguel has lost everything in a sudden shift in the sugar markets. Now, impoverished and humiliated, living on the charity of his petty younger brother, Miguel must find a way to restore his wealth and reputation. Miguel enters into a partnership with a seduc-tive Dutchwoman who offers him one last chance at success a daring plot to corner the market of an astonishing new commodity called "coffee." To succeed, Miguel must risk everything he values and test the limits of his commercial guile, facing not only the chaos of the markets and the greed of his competitors, but also a powerful enemy who will stop at nothing to see him ruined. When Catherine Tudish’s story collection Tenney’s Landing was published in 2005, Margot Livesey said Tudish "casts an irresistible spell" and David Huddle said, "Tenney’s Landing conjures up a place and a people with that magical vividness we found in Porter, Welty, Cheever, and Updike." Here, in her first novel, Tudish has fashioned a masterful and intimate portrait of a woman returning, midlife, to the small farming community where she grew up. After Nathan Rownd is injured in a tractor accident, his daughter, Virginia, leaves her suburban life and returns to Tenney’s Landing with her teenage son to work the family farm. She struggles with the long periods of separation from her husband and begrudgingly relearns the insistent, exhausting cadence of farm chores. But when Nathan decides to sell the farm, Virginia realizes how deep her connection to the land is and begins to question who she is and where she belongs. Catherine Tudish’s writing is a tribute to small-town America. In simple, elegant prose she captures the rhythms of everyday life and the moments of truth and transformation that are found there. American Cream is a tender and wise novel by a writer of unusual sensitivity and grace.

Look At Me: A Novel

At the start of this edgy and ambitiously multilayered novel, a fashion model named Charlotte Swenson emerges from a car accident in her Illinois hometown with her face so badly shattered that it takes eighty titanium screws to reassemble it. She returns to New York still beautiful but oddly unrecognizable, a virtual stranger in the world she once effortlessly occupied. With the surreal authority of a David Lynch, Jennifer Egan threads Charlotte’s narrative with those of other casualties of our infatuation with the image. There’s a deceptively plain teenaged girl embarking on a dangerous secret life, an alcoholic private eye, and an enigmatic stranger who changes names and accents as he prepares an apocalyptic blow against American society. As these narratives inexorably converge, Look at Me becomes a coolly mesmerizing intellectual thriller of identity and imposture. From the Trade Paperback edition.

A finalist for the Pulitzer Prize Jernigan introduced David Gates as a novelist of the highest order. "Full of dark truths and biting humor " wrote Frederick Exley "a brilliant novel [that] will be read for a long time." After that blackly comic handbook of self-destruction–whose antihero shoulders up to such crucial American figures as Bellow’s Herzog Updike’s Harry Angstrom Heller’s Bob Slocum Percy’s Binx Bolling and Irving’s Garp–Gates’s new novel investigates the essential truths of a marriage à la mode. Doug and Jean Willis fit the newly classic recognizable and seemingly normal variety: struggling against a riptide of the daily commute the mortgages the latchkey child-rearing and the country house as well as the hopes and desires from which all of this grew. In accordance with their long-standing agreement Doug embarks from their Westchester home on a leave of absence from the PR job that had ineluctably become his life while Jean contends with both her own job and their two children. Over a two-month period he’ll spruce up the family’s alternative universe up north in rural Preston Falls; she’ll deal with her end of the bargain and her worries about the survival of the family. But then domesticity hits the brick wall of private longings and nightmarish twists of fate. A surprising comic horrifying and always engrossing novel charged with the responsibilities of middle age and with the abiding power of love however disappointed–told with great artistry pitch-perfect understanding and fierce compassion. "A novel that’s the funniest sharpest most strangely exciting book about men and women in a long time." –Tom Prince Maxim From the Hardcover edition.

Unwelcome Light: a novel

Unwelcome Light: a novel

$8.59

David Lehner a private school teacher has written in Unwelcome Light a powerful riveting disturbing prep school novel to join the company of such novels as John Knowles’s A Separate Peace Tobias Wolff’s Old School and Alice Hoffman’s The River King. In each of these novels including Lehner’s the closed society of a boarding school is like a city-state where curses can fester. It is appropriate that the unnamed protagonist and narrator of Unwelcome Light is a teacher of classics at an American private boarding school for this novel is a modern enactment of tragic themes as old as Sophocles. Because of family secrets to which he is not privy the narrator comes close enough to committing incest (unknowingly and even innocently) to be judged guilty and to be punished for the sin cursed to live out his days in anguish. The understated parallel to the Oedipus story is enhanced by the mystery of the narrator’s parentage a nest of secrets that a âchorusâÂ? of colleagues know but won’t reveal until it’s too late. Although the ironies that shape both stories are similar the parallels between Unwelcome Light and Greek tragedy are not strict or obvious. The novel is packed with dark themes but it is also driven by modern plot twists and populated by complex secondary characters with psychological problems and secrets of their own. These problems include adultery mental illness theft alcoholism and various forms of deviant sexuality. In spite of its dark themes Unwelcome Light is a page-turning plot-driven novel intelligent and written with craft and skill.

101 Portraits of Jesus in the Hebrew Scriptures

$9.99

If Jesus didn’t come along until the New Testament, what is He doing in the Old Testament? In his forthcoming book, 101 Portraits of Jesus in the Hebrew Scriptures, author Bob Beasley, a graduate of Westminster Theological Seminary, seeks to answer that question in many more than 101 ways. In fact, even though the Old Testament, or “the Hebrew Scriptures,” was written 2,000 to 500 years prior to Jesus’ earthly ministry, some say the Lord may be found on its every page. Just as a great novel or movie will provide early warnings of things to come later on, the Old Testament is full of foreshadowing, specific prophesies, mighty works, and pre-incarnate appearances of the Savior. He is prefigured by men like Adam, Noah, Joseph, Moses, and David. Jesus is foreshadowed by furniture, rocks, food, a snake, doorways, trees, colors, and animals in many ways. He appears as smoke and fire and as the mysterious Angel of the Lord, all of this hundreds of years before born to Mary in Bethlehem. On the road to Emmaus following His resurrection, Jesus spoke with some of His followers. Luke tells us, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the [Hebrew] Scriptures concerning himself (Luke 24:27). In a compact and readable 101 chapters surveying Genesis to Malachi, Beasley merely scratches the surface of the wonderful truths of Jesus in the Old Testament, sure to deepen anyone’s understanding of and love for the entire Bible. This is a book for everyone, new Christians as well as old, and also for those seeking answers as to whether of not the Bible is trustworthy. The impact of the foreshadowing of Jesus is truly powerful. 101 Portraits will open the Scriptures for you as never before.

Not illustrated. Excerpt: Dune is a science fiction novel written by Frank Herbert, published in 1965. It won the Hugo Award in 1966, and also the inaugural Nebula Award for Best Novel. Dune is frequently cited as the world’s best-selling science fiction novel. Set in the far future amidst a sprawling feudal interstellar empire where planetary fiefdoms are controlled by noble houses that owe an allegiance to the Imperial House Corrino, Dune tells the story of young Paul Atreides (the heir apparent to Duke Leto Atreides and the scion of House Atreides) as he and his family accept control of the desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the “spice” melange, the most important and valuable substance in the universe. The story explores the complex and multi-layered interactions of politics, religion, ecology, technology, and human emotion, as the forces of the Empire confront each other for control of Arrakis and its “spice”. Herbert wrote five sequels to the novel Dune: Dune Messiah, Children of Dune, God Emperor of Dune, Heretics of Dune, and Chapterhouse: Dune. The first novel also inspired a 1984 film adaptation by David Lynch, a 2000 Sci Fi Channel miniseries and its 2003 sequel, computer games, a board game, a song, and a series of prequels, interquels, and sequels that were co-written by Kevin J. Anderson and the author’s son, Brian Herbert, starting in 1999. Florence, Oregon, with sand dunes that served as an inspiration for the Dune sagaAfter his novel The Dragon in the Sea was published in 1957, Herbert took an airplane to Florence, Oregon, at the north edge of the Oregon Dunes where the United States Department of Agriculture was experimenting using poverty grasses to stabilize the damaging sand dunes, that could “swallow whole

Excerpt: The documentary film Fahrenheit 9/11 generated substantial controversy and criticism after its release shortly before the U.S. presidential election, 2004. The film by Michael Moore accused the Bush administration of using the September 11, 2001 attacks to raise support for the War in Iraq. The title of the film refers to Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 and the September 11 attacks of 2001. The Fahrenheit 451 reference is emphasized by the film’s tagline “The temperature where freedom burns” (compare with Fahrenheit 451’s tagline, “The temperature at which books burn”). Moore has stated that the title came from the subject of an e-mail he received from a fan shortly after September 11. Bradbury was upset by what he considered the appropriation of his title. He reportedly asked for an apology from Moore and wanted the film renamed. The conservative political action group Move America Forward mounted a letter-writing campaign pressuring theater chains not to screen the film, which it compared to “an al-Qaeda training video.” “We’ve been causing them an enormous amount of aggravation”, said group member and talk radio host Melanie Morgan. Citizens United, a conservative group run by David Bossie, filed a complaint before the Federal Election Commission charging that ads for the film constitute political advertising and thus may not be aired 60 days before an election or 30 days before a party convention. On August 5, the FEC unanimously dismissed the complaint finding no evidence that the movie’s ads had broken the law. A further complaint filed in 2005 was also rejected. Shailagh Murray described Fahrenheit 9/11 in The Wall Street Journal as a “harshly satirical and controversial portrait of the Bush presidency.” Stephen Dalton of The Time… More:

“[Steinhauer’s] people are real, the crimes genuine, and he is telling larger truths about that era, making it unusually accessible.”—David Halberstam, LA Times on 36 Yalta Boulevard Olen Steinhauer’s first two novels, The Bridge of Sighs and The Confession, launched an acclaimed literary crime series set in post–World War II Eastern Europe. Now he takes his dynamic cast of characters into the shadowy political climate of the 1960s.State Security Officer Brano Sev’s job is to do what his superiors ask, no matter what. Even if that means leaving his post to work the assembly line in a factory, fitting electrical wires into gauges. So when he gets a directive from his old bosses—the intimidating men above him at the Ministry of State Security, collectively known for the address of their headquarters on Yalta Boulevard, a windowless building consisting of blind offices and dark cells—he follows orders. This time he is to resume his job in State Security and travel to the village of his birth in order to interrogate a potential defector. But when a villager turns up dead shortly after he arrives, Brano is framed for the murder. Again trusting his superiors, he assumes this is part of their plan and allows it to run its course, a decision that leads him into exile in Vienna, where he finally begins to ask questions. The answers in 36 Yalta Boulevard, Olen Steinhauer’s tour-de-force political thriller, teach Comrade Brano Sev that loyalty to the cause might be the biggest crime of all.

A Bad Day on Planet Earth

A Bad Day on Planet Earth

$6.99

A Bad Day on Planet Earth, is a science fiction novel about a group of college students who make a trip to Mammoth Cave during their spring break. Their decision to travel there instead of to Florida or some other exotic location actually results in saving their lives. While they are below ground within the cave system, the world is attacked by aliens, later called Onibs by the survivors. They are from the planet Patheon which orbits a companion star of the massive star, Sirius. The survivors discover that there is a secret laboratory located in an unused section of the cave. The scientists working there have developed a ray gun. This enables the people there to be able to survive the terrible dilemma facing the rest of the Earth. Later the survivors manage to capture Onib spaceships which they use to destroy domed cities that were built in North America. Fearing total annihilation by the Onibs, David Sears the hero along with many others take captured spaceships across the void of space in an attempt to destroy their home planet. Following the delivery of cobalt bombs on Patheon, the crew of the Earth ship become hopelessly lost in space for 18-years. They don’t age because of traveling over 100-times the speed of light. At a later date they join forces with a group of survivors called Anterians. The two forces travel some 140 light-years across the galaxy to attack the last remaining Patheon planet. The plot offers a tantalizing climax to the story. It allows the readers to live vicariously within the scenes with the different characters within the novel. As in his novel, “Until the End of Time,” the writer offers a different concept of travel across the sea of stars.

A Belated Guest (Bret Harte)

$0.99

Short reminiscence of an encounter with Bret Harte. According to Wikipedia: “William Dean Howells (March 1, 1837 – May 11, 1920) was an American realist author and literary critic… In 1858, he began to work at the Ohio State Journal where he wrote poetry, short stories, and also translated pieces from French, Spanish, and German. He avidly studied German and other languages and was greatly interested in Heinrich Heine. In 1860, he visited Boston and met with American writers James Thomas Fields, James Russell Lowell, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Henry David Thoreau, and Ralph Waldo Emerson. Said to be rewarded for a biography of Abraham Lincoln used during the election of 1860, he gained a consulship in Venice. On Christmas Eve 1862, he married Elinor Mead at the American embassy in Paris. Upon returning to the U.S., he wrote for various magazines, including Atlantic Monthly and Harper’s Magazine. From 1866, he became an assistant editor for the Atlantic Monthly and was made editor in 1871, remaining in the position until 1881. In 1869, he first met Mark Twain, which sparked a longtime friendship. Even more important for the development of his literary style–his advocacy of Realism–was his relationship with the journalist Jonathan Baxter Harrison, who in the 1870s wrote a series of articles for the Atlantic Monthly on the lives of ordinary Americans. He wrote his first novel, Their Wedding Journey, in 1872, but his literary reputation took off with the realist novel A Modern Instance, published in 1882, which described the decay of a marriage. His 1885 novel The Rise of Silas Lapham is perhaps his best known, describing the rise and fall of an Americanentrepreneur in the paint business. His social views were also strongly reflected in the novels Annie Kilburn (1888) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). He was particularly outraged by the trials resulting from the Haymarket Riot.”

Wtncott Esden had still another visitor that day—a long-haired, long-handed, nervous man, with a face that looked all nose. He had an impediment in his speech, and was inclined to be confidentially tearful. He answered to the name of J. P., and seemed contented with that mutilated form of address. ‘You won’t think I’m bothering you, will you?’ said J. P. ‘But if you forget that bill, you’ll break me. I can’t meet it, any more than I can fly.’ ‘ My dear fellow,’ responded Esden, ‘ there’s no earthly need for you to worry. You may regard the thing as being settled. You will never hear another word about it.’ The visitor, protesting that a great weight was taken from his mind, withdrew, and left Esden to himself. ‘ I must really do something about that mat ter,’ he confessed, ‘ and I must do it at once, though where the deuce the money is to come from is more than I can guess. I can’t ruin J. P. That’s out of the question. I’ll see Sheldon. I’ll go and see him now.’ He walked briskly into the Strand, and, hailing a hansom, drove to the offices of a money- lending solicitor of his acquaintance in Cork Street. Mr. Sheldon, despite his Christian- sounding name, was eminently Jewish in aspect and accent. ‘Want money?’ he said, when Esden had unfolded his story. ‘ So do I. So does everybody. You’re likely to want it, and to go on wanting it. There’s more of your paper in the market than I’d give a farthing in the pound for.’ ‘ I can’t let the other fellow in for the bill,’ said Esden. ‘Very well, then,’ responded the solicitor. ‘Don’t.’ Esden had never worked at a jury as he worked at this obdurate Hebrew. He coaxed, cajoled, and nattered. He said a hundred good things, and the solicitor, who had a sense of fun, laughed until his sides ached. …

A Day with Mr. Jules

When Alice, an elderly woman, smells the coffee her husband Jules has just made, she gets up. This ritual repeats itself every day, until one morning she finds him lifeless on the sofa in the living room — the coffee hasn’t quite finished filtering through. While Jules slowly turns into a statue that seems to be carved out of marble, Alice reminisces about earlier days and tells him things she hasn’t dared or been able to express before. When subsequently she has to come to terms with the sorrow and loss she is faced with, David, the autistic young son of a woman who lives in the same apartment building, becomes part of this process in an unexpected way. This deeply moving Belgian novel has been translated into many languages. The German edition alone has sold over 120,000 copies.

One of The Chicago Tribune’s Best Reads of 2011.One of Dublin’s most powerful men meets a violent end—and an acknowledged master of crime fiction delivers his most gripping novel yet.On a sweltering summer afternoon, newspaper tycoon Richard Jewell—known to his many enemies as Diamond Dick—is discovered with his head blown off by a shotgun blast. But is it suicide or murder? For help with the investigation, Detective Inspector Hackett calls in his old friend Quirke, who has unusual access to Dublin’s elite.Jewell’s coolly elegant French wife, Françoise, seems less than shocked by her husband’s death. But Dannie, Jewell’s high-strung sister, is devastated, and Quirke is surprised to learn that in her grief she has turned to an unexpected friend: David Sinclair, Quirke’s ambitious assistant in the pathology lab at the Hospital of the Holy Family. Further, Sinclair has been seeing Quirke’s fractious daughter Phoebe, and an unlikely romance is blossoming between the two. As a record heat wave envelops the city and the secret deals underpinning Diamond Dick’s empire begin to be revealed, Quirke and Hackett find themselves caught up in a dark web of intrigue and violence that threatens to end in disaster.Tightly plotted and gorgeously written, A Death in Summer proves to the brilliant but sometimes reckless Quirke that in a city where old money and the right bloodlines rule, he is by no means safe from mortal danger.

Mrs. Slater has waited fourteen long years to tell her son, Gene, the truth. And when he wakes up on his twenty-first birthday, she greets him with the customary banners and good wishes, and then gets to the point. “Your father was murdered. He was stabbed in the back and his feet were lopped off and thrown into a drainage ditch.” Thus begins a comic and twisted journey of obsession and revenge. Gene would rather focus his attentions on Caitlin, a passionate literature major, than avenge the death of his 400-pound father who was killed in the Poconos Mountains while walking cross-country to lose weight. Caitlin barely notices the naïve young man and is, herself, obsessed with her Russian Lit professor, a tormented genius who thinks he’s living in a Dostoyevsky novel. Suddenly, a mysterious woman named Lily stumbles into the family-owned laundromat, and is instantly struck by the pain etched into Mrs. Slater’s face. Lily, in turn, is living with an absurdly dull appliance repairman who has taken to writing children’s stories to jazz up his boring life, which gets progressively and horrifyingly thrilling the further he gets pulled into the unraveling events. Set in New York’s Lower East Side, this frantic dark comedy, satirizes elements of nineteenth-century Russian novels, complete with seizures, hallucinations, a flooding city, nightmares, train wrecks and suicide, all wrapped around a murder mystery with a Rube Goldberg-like plot.

A powerful work that surely will become a classic of Civil War fiction. A superb book. – Robert K. Krick, author of Stonewall Jackson at Cedar Mountain This strikingly fine novel leaves an indelible impression on the reader long after he puts it down. In some ways it reminds me of the wonderful Raintree County. As Stephen Crane once said about Civil War historical writing, ‘I want to be there.’ In A Distant Flame, Mr. Williams takes us there, and it’s a landscape that captures the heart. – Robert J. Mrazek, author of Unholy Fire A Distant Flame takes a sultry summer day in 1914 and weaves it into a page-turning tale of Civil War Georgia. This is not ‘moonlight and magnolias, ‘ but Philip Lee Williams’s bittersweet story of life, love, and loss in a small Southern town will touch your heart and move you to tears. – David Evans, author of Sherman’s Horsemen The dramatic wartime events of A Distant Flame are written in the heart of Charlie Merrill—sharpshooter, lover, pilgrim, and friend of General Cleburne. This intense and memorable story of battlefield and hearth tells us that it is high time to assess and treasure the work of Philip Lee Williams. – Marly Youmans, author of The Wolf Pit, winner of the Michael Shaara Award A Distant Flame is the best story yet written about the Atlanta campaign and life on the home front in Civil War Georgia. It is also much more. It blends scrupulously researched history with powerful narrative to produce a compelling, multidimensional story of one man’s life as shaped by the Civil War over a span of fifty years. It is a story of war, love, and community in a small north Georgia town, brilliantly told, fullof insights into the complex impact of the Civil War on everyday Southerners. – Thomas G. Artists and Writers Celebrate Peter Steiner’s A French Country Murder”This is a fantastic novel, at once a gripping political thriller, a complex mystery tale, and a wise and penetrating look at ambition, duty, and lost ambitions. Peter Steiner superbly evokes France, Washington, and international relations. It’s rewarding on every level.”- David Brooks, author of Bobos in Paradise: The New Upper Class and How They Got There”Best known for his subtle cartoons in The New Yorker, Peter Steiner has now done an unexpected, but expert, back-flip into the world of international intrigue with this, his first novel. A French Country Murder takes Louis Morgon, late of the CIA, deep into the French countryside in this melancholy thriller in which the compound humiliations of a powerful man lead to murder. Let me be the first to offer a well-deserved champagne toast to this book and its author, who seems to have mastered within its pages a whole new world. Salud!” – Jack Ziegler, cartoonist for The New Yorker”Peter Steiner’s rattling, sophisticated international thriller of lies, spies, cover-ups, malignant powers, betrayal, love, and detection comes wrapped in a headily exquisite mise-en-scene—the tastiest crepe that’s ever astonished you in the French countryside. I could stop till I’d sopped up that last drop of sauce!”- Diana McLellan, author of The Girls: Sappho Goes to Hollywood”I really enjoyed reading Peter Steiner’s book. I loved the feeling of the French countryside’s peace and quiet that permeated the story. Even the murder itself seemed a quiet event, a welcome change from the pyrotechnics of other murder mysteries. The characters are engaging and reader-friendly and the story unfolds at a perfect pace, the emotions and inner thoughts of the protagonist worked in seamlessly, adding depth to the events.”- Mick Stevens, cartoonist for The

A Gentleman in Charleston and the Manner of His Death

A Gentleman in Charleston and the Manner of His Death

$8.31

Once deemed the most powerful man in the South, Charleston newspaper editor Frank Dawson met his violent death on March 12, 1889, at the hands of his neighbor, a disreputable doctor who was attempting to seduce the Dawson family governess. Drawn from events surrounding this infamous episode, the third novel from the Lillian Smith Award-winning William P. Baldwin pulls back the veil of a genteel society in a fabled southern city and exposes a dark visage of anger and secret pain that no amount of imposed manners could restrain, and only love might eventually heal. With a southern storyteller’s passion for intricate emotional and physical details, Baldwin, through the fictional guise of Capt. David Lawton, chronicles editor Dawson’s fated end. Having survived three years of bloody Civil War combat and the decade of violent Reconstruction that followed, the liberal-minded Lawton is now an embattled newspaperman whose national importance is on the wane. Still, he remains a celebrated member of Charleston’s elite, while in private life moving amid a pantheon of proud and beautiful women–Sarah, his brilliant wife; Abbie, his sensual sister-in-law; Mary, the all-knowing prostitute; and Helene, the discontented Swiss governess–each contributing to an unfolding drama of history-haunted turmoil. Though Lawton loathes the South’s cult of personal violence, by the customs of his era and place he is duty-bound to protect his household. Unable to act otherwise, Lawton meets his rival in a brutal physical contest, and in the aftermath, Sarah, Abbie, Mary, and Helene must make peace with their own turbulent pasts. War, earthquake, political guile, adultery, illegitimacy, lust, and murder–all thedevices of gothic romance–play a role in this tale closely based on the lives of Charlestonians who lived these events over a century ago.

Sixteen-year-old Oliver Puckle, news gatherer for the Concord Freeman in the summer of 1846, has his work cut out for him when word arrives of a gruesome murder at Walden Pond. As Oliver leads the charge to unravel the mystery, he has much to learn from his colorful neighbors – among them Ralph Waldo Emerson and a feisty teenage Louisa May Alcott – but unexpectedly it is the recluse Thoreau himself who provides particular help to the investigation. This posthumously published novel, set in the famously literary town of Concord, Massachusetts, is rich with intrigue and witty detail and features a foreword by the author’s son.

Short essay. His 1885 novel The Rise of Silas Lapham is perhaps his best known, describing the rise and fall of an American entrepreneur in the paint business. His socialviews were also strongly reflected in the novels Annie Kilburn (1888) and A Hazard of New Fortunes (1890). He was particularly outraged by the trials resulting from the Haymarket Riot.”
