Twilight Makes Robert Pattinson An Overnight Sensation   by Billy Baker

Robert Pattinson is clearly an overnight sensation with the hit movie Twilight. While other actors and actresses had to work hard to make it big, Pattinson’s star meteorically rises in popularity with the vampire flick.

The Twilight movie has been a huge box office sensation, earning more than $200 million in its first few weeks of release in northern America. In fact, the movie is so popular it has knocked the James Bond “Quantum of Solace” from its coveted number one spot.

Who is Robert Pattinson?

He is a British born actor, model and musician. You Can admire both his good looks and his music in this movie. Not only is he drop dead gorgeous as the vampire Edward Cullen, he also sings quite well. His original song “Never Think” is featured on the movie’s soundtrack.

Other Robert Pattinson movies include Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, where Pattinson played Cedric Diggory, and Little Ashes, yet to be released, in which Pattinson stars as famous artist Salvador Dali.

For his stellar performance as Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter, Times Online dubbed the actor as the “British Star of Tomorrow”. (Well it is only 2008, and some would say that in a vampire calendar 3 years is only a mere tiny window of time.)

Prior to the success of Twilight, Rob Pattinson had been seriously thinking about chucking the acting gig in. However, the thought that he may have left it too late to embark on university study made him realise that he should start taking acting more seriously.

The Twilight success.

For many Twilight readers, seeing Robert Pattinson in Twilight, was Edward Cullen come to life. The way that Stephenie Meyer describes the 17 year old vampire Edward in the book passes more than a fleeting resemblance to the finished product of Pattinson. My daughter and myself were both astonished when we first saw the trailers and posters for Twilight as to how perfect the casting was with Robert as Edward.

As we all now know, it is only a matter of time before we see the second installment of the Twilight series, New Moon. Production has been approved and it is now full steam ahead, as Edward is frozen at the age of 17. Filming on the remaining 3 stories needs to be finished before he gets too old. Robert Pattinson as the drop dead gorgeous Edward Cullen will keep us mere warm blooded mortals coming back for more.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford (P.S.)

$4.99

From critically acclaimed author Ron Hansen comes a breathtaking recreation of the American West – a riveting retelling of the life of its most famous outlaw, Jesse James, and his ignoble death at the hands of the “dirty little coward” who coveted James’s legend. It is a stunning portrait of two men – James, a charismatic, spiritual, larger-than-life badman whose bloody exploits captured the imagination and admiration of a nation hungry for antiheroes; and Robert Ford, a young upstart nobody torn between dedicated worship and murderous jealousy. Powerful, strange, and unforgettable, it is a story of America in all her rough, conflicted glory – and of the myths that made her.

Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg

$75

In a career of nearly 60 years, Robert Rauschenberg changed the course of art history, art making, and viewers’ experience of art. An artist of protean creativity, he transformed the mediums of sculpture, painting, prints, and photography. Rauschenberg elevated seemingly casual, everyday images. He also embraced discarded and found materials, reintroducing content to art after decades when abstraction held sway. This book covers the full span of the artist’s career, from 1950 to 2007, focusing on key works from the collection of the artist’s estate. Robert Rauschenberg includes many works that have not been shown since they were first made and exhibited more than 30 years ago, as well as masterpieces that have recently been seen in museum exhibitions. Texts by James Lawrence and John Richardson are accompanied by more than 60 color illustrations, and more than 50 black-and-white historical photographs. Also featured is an extensive chronology by Susan Davidson detailing the artist’s life and career that is destined to become a fundamental reference for students of Rauschenberg’s influential oeuvre. Jack Lawrence is a critic and historian of postwar and contemporary art. Curator and art historian John Richardson is the renowned author of the multi-volume biography A Life of Picasso. Author — James Lawrence and John Richardson. Hardcover. 256 pages. 10½" × 13" (25 cm × 33 cm).

True Story of Jesse James

True Story of Jesse James

$12.73

Actually, this retelling of the life of outlaw Jesse James is only as true as its predecessor, the highly fanciful 1939 Tyrone Power-Henry Fonda starrer Jesse James. Generous chunks of stock footage from the earlier film are reused here, albeit reframed to accommodate the CinemaScope process. Robert Wagner makes an interesting James, though he is upstaged throughout by Jeffrey Hunter as his brother Frank. Adhering to the Canon, the film insists that the James boys were forced into a life of crime by greedy railroad men — hence, their ongoing vendetta against trains. Director Nicholas Ray adds a few psychological nuances not found in the more prosaic 1939 film. John Carradine, who played dirty little coward Bob Ford in the original Jesse James, appears in the remake as Rev. Jethro Bailey. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Movie Guide

Robert Plant's Jukebox

Robert Plant’s Jukebox

$12.72

Robert Plant’s Jukebox is a 26-track compilation of songs from artists who inspired the ex-Led Zeppelin legend’s long and storied career. Like a lot of classic rock-minded Brits, Plant was initially drawn to American blues and R&B, and this collection spends a lot of time on the genres, offering up cuts from James Brown, Leadbelly, Blind Willie Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, and Bo Diddley, to name just a few, but his love for North African and Indian rhythms, as well as West Coast psychedelic rock like Moby Grape and Jefferson Airplane, is lent quite a bit of weight as well, resulting in a solid enough mishmash of rock, pop, worldbeat, and deep Southern soul wrapped up in the hazy glow of the Summer of Love. ~ James Christopher Monger, Rovi

The Road to Robert Johnson

The Road to Robert Johnson

$23.18

During the last quarter of the 20th century, and thanks largely to Eric Clapton’s remarkable devotion to his memory, Robert Leroy Johnson posthumously became the most celebrated Delta blues musician of the pre-WWII era. Among numerous editions of his complete works and various anthologies that combine his recordings with those of his contemporaries and followers, J.S.P.’s The Road to Robert Johnson and Beyond combines many of his essential performances with those by dozens of other blues artists from Blind Lemon Jefferson and Henry Thomas to Muddy Waters and Elmore James. 105 tracks fill four CDs with several decades’ worth of strongly steeped blues that trace the African American migration from the deep south on up into Chicago. This is a fine way to savor the recorded evidence, as primary examples from Blind Blake, Charley Patton, Son House, Charlie McCoy, Walter Vincson, Skip James, Ma Rainey, Tampa Red, Kokomo Arnold, Scrapper Blackwell, Leroy Carr, Lonnie Johnson, and Peetie Wheatstraw lead directly to early modern masters like Big Joe Williams, Sonny Boy Williamson, Big Bill Broonzy, Johnny Temple, Leroy Foster, Johnny Shines, Homesick James Williamson, Robert Jr. Lockwood, Snooky Pryor, Little Walter, and David Honeyboy Edwards, among many others. This collection would be greatly enhanced by Edward Komara’s The Road to Robert Johnson: The Genesis and Evolution of Blues in the Delta from the Late 1800s Through 1938, a highly regarded work of musicological scholarship published at the same time as J.S.P. released their similarly titled box set in 2007. Careful remastering and affordable pricing make this hefty stash of classic blues an excellent option for anyone who cares at all about where the music came from and how it evolved. ~ arwulf arwulf, Rovi Performers: James Walker – Washboard; Charlie Dixon – Banjo; Howard H. Scott – Cornet; Louis Ford – Mandolin; Snooky Pryor – Harmonica; Sonny Boy Williamson – Harmonica; Albert Williams – Piano; Alfred Elkins – Bass; Baby Boy Warren – Vocals, Guitar;

James Dean Story

James Dean Story

$4.08

Rated: NASynopsis: A cut above the usual cheesy paste-up “tribute,” The James Dean Story is imbued with a modicum of style thanks to fledgling film-director Robert Altman. Most of the film consists of clips from Dean’s three starring pictures (East of Eden, Rebel Without a Cause and Giant), with tantalizing glimpses of his pre-star career. One such glimpse, a snippet from the 1951 TV religious special Hill Number One, has popped up in virtually every Dean retrospective since. Altman’s inherent cinematic gifts are evident in the impressionistic “re-enactment” of Dean’s fatal auto crash. Narrated by Martin Gabel, The James Dean Story isn’t terribly deep, but it’s a good shorthand overview of one of the most powerful screen presences of the 1950s. The acclaimed science-fiction authors Lois Gresh and Robert Weinberg provide a highly entertaining, informative look at the real-world achievements and brilliant imaginations behind such singular Bond gadgets as the buzz-saw Rolex, the car that turns into a submarine, and the ever-popular rocket-firing cigarette. Robert Johnson's Tombstone

Robert Johnson’s Tombstone

$21.58

Long-running British hard rockers Thunder are being a bit presumptive when they call an album Robert Johnson’s Tombstone, since their brand of AC/DC-style crunch owes only slightly more to the blues than Be Bop Deluxe owes to Charlie Parker. Indeed, the opening title track is a bit of a laugh, a shamefully earnest bit of white-boy blooze that simply doesn’t come off very well. With that out of the way, however, Thunder return to what made them, if not famous, then at least reasonably well known in certain circles: punchy three-chord hard rock delivered with maximum swagger and minimum fuss. Highlights include the surprisingly thoughtful meditation on fame and art in “Andy Warhol Said,” and the seven-minute boogie workout “Last Man Standing.” While Robert Johnson’s Tombstone won’t win Thunder any new acolytes, fans will be entirely pleased. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Ben Matthews – Keyboards, Guitar; Chris Childs – Bass; Daniel Don Bowes – Vocals (Background), Vocals; Harry James – Drums, Percussion; Luke Morley – Vocals (Background), Guitar, Percussion

Licence to Kill (James Bond)

Licence to Kill (James Bond)

$12.73

James Bond (Timothy Dalton) returns with a vengeance in LICENCE TO KILL. Having just witnessed his best friend’s wedding, Bond is shocked when he learns that ruthless drug runner Franz Sanchez (Robert Davi) has assaulted the couple on their honeymoon, killing the bride. Assisted by the twiggy Drug Enforcement Agent Pam Bouvier (Carey Lowell) and the gadget wizard Q (Patrick Llewelyn), Bond resigns from Her Majesty’s Secret Service and pursues justice on his own. Perhaps the darkest of the 007 films, LICENCE TO KILL, exhibits a previously unseen side of James Bond. Maniacal at times, ex-agent 007, detonates everything in his way on the road to avenging his friend’s bride. The 16th installment of the James Bond series, LICENCE TO KILL, veers away from the pick-up artistry and light interlocution of former 007 films. Instead, director John Glen, gives the audience a crystal clear view of the man behind the martini glass.

Robert Johnson: The Prince's Almain

Robert Johnson: The Prince’s Almain

$7.18

Composer Robert Johnson was part of the circle of Shakespeare and Ben Jonson at the beginning of the 17th century. Little of his music has survived; this release by British-American lutenist Nigel North includes most of what did. Johnson’s music was probably used in Shakespeare’s plays, and this album may be of interest to theatrical producers for that reason. It consists of dances: pavanes, galliards, almains (allemands), and titled pieces like The Witches’ Dance (track 7), mostly of the sort that Dowland, another contemporary, also composed. But the effect of Johnson’s music is different; it’s simpler, more transparent, and much less given to melancholy than Dowland’s. Sample the economical elegance of The Fairies’ Dance (track 10) for a taste. The virtuosity lies mostly in the ornaments applied rather than in the notated music, but the four numbered pavanes and a few other pieces have “divisions” or variations attached. North informs the buyer in his notes (in English only) that Pavan No. 2 “has divisions which I felt were not good enough to be Johnson’s, so I preferred to add my own.” This is questionable policy with little-known music, but in general North’s performances are graceful, confident, lyrical, and clean. The same can’t be said for the sound, which places the lute in an Ontario church (is that a place a lute feels at home?) where the sound is too live and picks up extraneous instrument noise a 17th century audience would never have heard. Still, this release will find an audience among Renaissance lute fans and those interested in Shakespeare and his era. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Nigel North – Lute

James Joyce & Jonathon Swift-Irish Lit

$14.98

The works and the worlds of two of the giants of Irish literature, Jonathan Swift & James Joyce, are explored. Jonathan Swift & Gulliver’s Travels: With politics, religion, and the monarchy numbering amongst his targets, Swift created a masterpiece that is both a parody of the ‘travelers’ tales’ genre and a scathing satire on human nature. James Joyce’s Dublin – the Ulysses Tour: Robert Nicholson, curator of the James Joyce Museum, Sandycove, guides us through Joyce’s world, with great enthusiasm and an irreverent sensibility that Joyce would surely have relished.

James Joyce’s Dublin: The Ulysses Tour

$10.1

When Ulysses was first published back in 1922, it expanded the public’s preconceptions about what was permissible in fiction despite being denounced as obscene and even unreadable by some critics. These days, Joyce’s labyrinthine novel is widely touted as one of the greatest fictional works of the 20th Century. In this documentary, James Joyce Museum curator Robert Nicholson offers an irreverent tour of both the author’s fascinating world and the environment that helped to shape him into a literary legend. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Russian Settings of Robert Burns

Russian Settings of Robert Burns

$14.38

Russian admiration for the poetry of Robert Burns dates not, as might be supposed, from the nineteenth century but from the Communist era, when Burns was regarded as a kind of people’s poet. The specific stimulus for the settings on this release by Shostakovich and the infamous Tikhon Khrennikov, from which the other works flowed, was the World War II alliance between the Soviet Union and Britain. Russian Jewish poet Samuil Marshak translated Burns into Russian, taking care to avoid the raunchier aspects (Stalin was a notorious puritan) and anything detracting from the main message of peasant virtue. He also required many words to say what Burns could say in a few. English translations included in the booklet are not translations of Burns but of Marshak’s translations, and they are in several cases a good deal longer than the originals. They also show Marshak’s massagings. The booklet includes two essays; one, by Burns scholar Andrew Noble, is critical of the Soviet appropriation of Burns, but both note the ways in which some of the composers, Shostakovich especially, worked at cross purposes with their lyricist. Burns’ war poetry calls forth some of the strongest responses from these composers, living under the shadow of a war in which 20 million soldiers died. The setting of Highland Laddie by Gyorgy Sviridov, composed in 1955, makes explicit the bleakness contained in Burns’ lyric. Burns’ humor largely goes by the wayside, although the sly setting of Comin’ Thro’ the Rye by Shostakovich (track 14) is an exception. Sviridov and Levitin were Shostakovich’s students, and their settings bear a resemblance to each other’s, although not so much to their teacher’s; the more conservative Khrennikov retreated to the language of late Russian romanticism, and it’s quite a shock to hear the words of “Auld Lang Syne” (whose popularity in North America is largely the work of the bandleader Guy Lombardo) set in this way. The ideological complexities involved in this music shouldn’t obscure the fact that it’s for the most part a lot of fun, and the performances by Ukrainian-British bass-baritone Vassily Savenko are enthusiastic and confident. He is ably accompanied by Aleksandr Blok, a relative of the poet of the same name. Another intriguing hour from the consistently original Toccata Classics label. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Alexander Blok – Piano; Vassily Savenko – Baritone (Vocal)

Robert Schumann: A Tribute to Bach

Robert Schumann: A Tribute to Bach

$15.98

German historical keyboardist Andreas Staier has used period instruments in a distinctive way: rather than trying to reproduce historical performances, he uses old instruments to explore musical currents of the periods from which they come. Here he plays an Erard piano, built in Paris in 1837, that certainly might have been known to Robert Schumann and has an intimate yet rather sober, clinky sound. It fits beautifully with the program here, which investigates Bach’s influence on Schumann. The composer would not have played these 41 short pieces one after another, but they do illuminate the varied nature of that influence, engagingly described by Staier in his booklet notes (in French, German, and English). It’s a bit surprising that no one has done this kind of album before, for Schumann’s engagement with Bach emerges as more extensive and more varied than that of Mendelssohn, whose name is usually the one mentioned in this connection. Schumann not only wrote Bachian polyphony — often, Staier contends, at times of psychological crisis — but also pursued various analogies between the keyboard fugue and the short Romantic piano piece. This took the form of hybrid experiments like the Scherzo, Gigue, Romanze, and Fughette, Op. 32, as well as a broader Bachian influence in the short character pieces of the Waldszenen, Op. 82, and even the familiar Kinderszenen, Op. 15. Staier is able to rely on Schumann’s own writings here, including the remark that “fugues are character pieces of the first order,” an idea that shaped the performance of Bach’s fugues until well into the last century. He also points to the freeform polyphony that is so characteristic of Schumann’s music, and to the seeming independence of Schumann’s music from any particular speed. This independence led to long disputes over Schumann’s own metronome markings, with his wife firing the first shots in a long volley of exchanges into which Staier duly enters. One wonders whether his intriguing but rather artificial project does not shape his interpretations a bit as well: the distinctly undreamy Kinderszenen are rehearings that accord with the sound of the rest of the album, but not so much with other equally defensible conceptions of the music. That need not, however, interfere with the listener’s enjoyment of this typically stimulating Staier release. ~ James Manheim, Rovi Performers: Andreas Staier – Piano

“General James Longstreet fought in nearly every campaign of the Civil War, from Manassas (the first battle of Bull Run) to Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chickamauga, Gettysburg, and was present at the surrender at Appomattox. Lee called “my old war horse.”"

James MacMillan: Miserere

James MacMillan: Miserere

$13.57

This collection of sacred choral music, mostly a cappella, includes an exceptionally attractive assortment of James MacMillan’s motets and other works written for liturgical use. It would have to be an exceptional church choir that could negotiate the composer’s vocal and choral demands, but for those churches, these pieces would lend considerable musical and emotional power to the service. The Sixteen, Harry Christophers’ remarkable mixed chamber choir, is undaunted by the extreme virtuosity required and deliver performances that dazzle in their technical polish and expressive impact. This music, while largely tonal, has enough dissonant spice that anything less than immaculate intonation can sound like mush and the Sixteen nails MacMillan’s harmonies beautifully. That purity, coupled with acute precision of articulation, makes these performances exemplary accounts of the music. MacMillan can overshoot in his large-scale choral works, some of which tend to lose impact because they can come across as overly ambitious in their attempts at grandeur, but these pieces, most of which last around ten minutes or less, are on a scale that calls forth some of the composer’s most inspired writing. Miserere, recorded here for the first time and dedicated to Christophers, is a real stunner in its powerful use of simple means and its transcendent climax. It, like many of these pieces, takes plainchant as its basis. In splendoribus sanctorum, with a solo trumpet accompaniment, is a real show-stopper, creating an awesome, ceremonial sense of majesty. The three Tenebrae Responsories, liturgical descriptions of the crucifixion, are the most dissonant pieces and also among the most powerfully astonishing and expressive works on the album. Coro’s sound is characteristically clean, warm, detailed, and well balanced. Highly recommended for fans of contemporary choral music. ~ Stephen Eddins, Rovi Performers: Cecilia Osmond – Soprano (Vocal); Christopher Royall – Alto (Vocals); Eamon Dougan – Bass (Vocal); Elin Manahan Thomas – Soprano (Vocal); Mark Dobell – Tenor (Vocal); Rebecca Outram – Soprano (Vocal); Robert Evans – Bass (Vocal); Robert Farley – Trumpet; The Sixteen – Choir, Chorus

The King James Bible and the World It Made

The King James Bible and the World It Made

$24.95

“>The King James translation of the Bible ushered in a new eloquence that until 1611had not existed in the English language. Four centuries later, the literary and historical power of this Bible continues to awe. Originally conceived to help unify Protestants during the English Reformation, many of the Bible’s phrases still saturate popular prose–as evidenced by sayings such as “an eye for an eye” and Abraham Lincoln’s famous “a house divided against itself,” and even in the intonations of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the music of Johnny Cash. The King James Bible and the World It Made brings into conversation leading contemporary scholars who articulate how this celebrated translation repeatedly influenced the language of politics, statecraft, and English literature while offering Christians a unique resource for living the faith.Including Mark Noll, Alister McGrath, Lamin Sanneh, David Bebbington, Robert Alter, Philip Jenkins, and Laura Knoppers, this collection highlights the most notable facets of the King James Bible and the history it created, and astutely reflects on its relevance to the modern world.”

Excerpt: Prince Charles’s Men (known as the Duke of York’s Men from 1608 to 1612) was a playing company or troupe of actors in Jacobean and Caroline England. The company was formed in 1608 as the Duke of York’s Men, under the titular patronage of King James’ second son, the eight-year-old Charles (160049), then the Duke of York. Upon the death of Charles’s elder brother Prince Henry in 1612, the company became Prince Charles’s Men. They played mainly in the provinces for the first two years of their existence, but in 1610 they received a renewed royal patent that authorized them to play in London, “in such usual houses as themselves shall provide.” Seven actors are listed in the patent: John Garland, William Rowley, Thomas Hobbes, Robert Dawes, Joseph Taylor, John Newton, and Gilbert Reason. Rowley was their dramatist and clown; Joseph Taylor would be their leading man in future years, and then fill the same function with the King’s Men, when he replaced the late Richard Burbage in May 1619. Garland was a veteran, having been a founding member of Queen Elizabeth’s Men in 1583. Hobbes had a comparably long career ahead of him: he would be with the King’s Men as late as 1637. Newton and Reason continued with the company until its end in 1625. For a short time around 161415, they joined forces with the Lady Elizabeth’s Men at Philip Henslowe’s recently-built Hope Theatre, but separated again in 1616 when the Lady Elizabeth’s company left London to tour the provinces. Taylor transferred to the King’s Men in 1619; in the same year, Prince Charles’s Men left Henslowe’s Hope (a less-than-ideal venue for drama, since it doubled as a bear-baiting ring) and moved into Christopher Beeston’s Cockpit Theatre, and were thereafter closely associated with Beeston’s … More:

Excerpt: Robinson Crusoe, is a novel by Daniel Defoe. First published in 1719, it is sometimes considered to be the first novel in English. The book is a fictional autobiography of the title charactera castaway who spends 28 years on a remote tropical island near Venezuela, encountering Native Americans, captives, and mutineers before being rescued. The story was likely influenced by the real-life Alexander Selkirk, a Scottish castaway who lived four years on the Pacific island called “Más a Tierra” (in 1966 its name was changed to Robinson Crusoe Island), Chile. However, the details of Crusoe’s island were probably based on the Caribbean island of Tobago, since that island lies a short distance north of the Venezuelan coast near the mouth of the Orinoco river, and in sight of the island of Trinidad. It is also likely that Defoe was inspired by the Latin or English translations of Ibn Tufail’s Hayy ibn Yaqdhan, an earlier novel also set on a desert island. Another source for Defoe’s novel may have been Robert Knox’s account of his abduction by the King of Ceylon in 1659 in “An Historical Account of the Island Ceylon,” Glasgow: James MacLehose and Sons (Publishers to the University), 1911. Pictorial map of Crusoe’s island, aka “Island of Despair,” showing incidents from the bookCrusoe (the family name transcribed from the German name “Kreutznaer” or “Kreutznär”) sets sail from the Queen’s Dock in Hull on a sea voyage in September 1651, against the wishes of his parents, who want him to stay home and assume a career in law. After a tumultuous journey that sees his ship wrecked by a vicious storm, his lust for the sea remains so strong

Chapters: 1834 Operas, 1834 Songs, the Mountain Sylph, Gemma Di Vergy, Das Nachtlager in Granada, Rosmonda D’inghilterra, Ô Canada! Mon Pays, Mes Amours. Not illustrated. Excerpt: The Mountain Sylph is an opera in two acts by John Barnett to a libretto by Thomas James Thackeray, after Trilby, ou le lutin d’Argail by Charles Nodier. It was first produced in London at the Lyceum Theatre in 1834 with great success. Often (mistakenly) cited as the first thorough-composed English opera of the 19th century, it was Barnett’s only great success on the stage out of some 30 operas and operettas, and was perhaps the most effective work by an English composer in the style of Carl Maria von Weber. Rarely (if ever) performed in the last century, its plot was parodied by W. S. Gilbert in his libretto for the Savoy Opera Iolanthe (1882). The story-line of The Mountain Sylph, based on Nodier’s tale, had already been adapted in 1832 by the singer Adolphe Nourrit as the basis of the ballet La Sylphide, and it was probably the success of the ballet in Paris, where the cast included the famous ballerina, Marie Taglioni, which brought the subject to Barnett’s attention. In any case, the opera more closely follows the story of the ballet than that of Nodier’s story. Before The Mountain Sylph, Barnett had mainly written comic operettas, incidental music and songs for plays, and burlesques and adaptations of popular foreign works, including the opera Robert le diable by his distant cousin Giacomo Meyerbeer. The Mountain Sylph owes its larger scale to a fortunate accident. As Barnett wrote in a note to the published score: The following (my first attempt at legitimate Opera), was, in its original form, intended as a Musical Drama for the Victoria Theatre, and written for an … More:

1896 Summer Olympics Events: Athletics at the 1896 Summer Olympics

$14.14

Purchase includes free access to book updates online and a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: At the 1896 Summer Olympics, twelve athletics events were contested. All of the events except the marathon were held in the Panathinaiko Stadium, which was also the finish for the marathon. Events were held on 6 April, 7 April, 9 April, and 10 April 1896 (all dates are according to the Gregorian calendar). 64 athletes, all men, from ten nations competed. This made athletics the most international of the nine sports at the 1896 Games. The American team of 10, which featured only one national champion, was dominant, taking 9 of the 12 titles. No world records were set, as few international top competitors had turned up. In addition, the curves of the track were very tight, making fast times in the running events virtually impossible. The heats of the 100 metres were the first Olympic event to be conducted, and the winner of the first heat, Francis Lane, can thus be considered the first Olympic winner. The first Olympic champion was crowned in the triple jump, Harvard student James Connolly. Connolly also did well in the other jumping events, placing second in the high jump and third in the long jump. Many other athletes were versatile as well. Tom Burke won both the 100 metres and 400 metres, a feat not since repeated, while London-based Australian Edwin Flack won the 800 and 1500 metres races. Robert Garrett, a Princeton student, won two first and two second places. His first title was in the discus throw, an event originating from the Ancient Olympics, but never before held at an international event. Garrett had attempted to train for the event with a 10 kilogram replica of a discus, but had given up as it was too heavy. When he learned the actual competition discus weighed only 2 kilograms, he entered the event after all, and won it, to the d… More:

1984

$17.98

Originally released in 1973 by the Soft Machine bassist shortly after the band had lost eccentric drummer/vocalist Robert Wyatt and had begun their evolution into a respectable (and somewhat predictable) jazz-rock ensemble, this was Hopper’s attempt at something more experimental. As he reports in his amusing CD notes, the record label CBS was all in favor of his solo excursion until he let them know what he had in mind, at which point they declined to pay even for studio time, so Hopper had to take out a bank loan to make the recording — which says a lot for Hopper’s belief in his artistic vision, and not much at all for the musical (as opposed to financial) vision of CBS. Hopper’s 1984 is inspired by George Orwell’s totalitarian fantasy of the same name, and the two longest tracks, “Miniluv” and “Miniplenty,” feature Hopper’s multitracked solo work on bass, percussion, mellophone, loops and electronics, with only John Marshall, the Soft Machine drummer, contributing additional percussion on the second piece. This music had an appropriately eerie, ominous quality, with heavy use of chattering tape loops, reverberating bass drones and woozy, sometimes harsh slide work on bass guitar strings. Hopper suggests, retrospectively, that these several pieces may have represented the “normal” citizens in Orwell’s dystopia, who were nonetheless a little “bent” by their soul-destroying environment. However, it is just as likely that Hopper was simply indulging his admitted fondness for James Brown. 1984 was always a musical oddity, and…
