Moving Cars To A New Location Has Never Been So Easy    by Maureen Romensya

Moving cars to a new location used to mean that there was only one option open for you to get it there, you drove it yourself. These days moving an automobile has become much easier for any person.

Car transport companies are available these days to make moving a vehicle a much simpler process for you. You see, You Can now hire a company to hire to move your vehicle for you to a new location and it will be done effectively and safely.

These companies are helping thousands of people all over the world transport a vehicle to a new location. They give a few various transport options for anyone so you can select the option that makes you feel comfortable about trusting their company with your automobile.

The most common options that each company offers include the following. This type of transport is good for any every day automobile, but not for any classic or exotic car.

1. Open trailer transport – Everyone has seen cars being transported this way. This is when your vehicle is placed on to the back of a trailer attached to a big rig and then it is moved with other automobiles to the new location.

2. Enclosed transport – For the classic or exotic automobiles it is wise to use enclosed transport. This is just what it sounds like; your vehicle will be placed in to an enclosed trailer so it is well protected during the transport process.

3. International transport – This is the best option to use for anyone that is making a move internationally. The transport companies have great methods set up for getting any automobile to any location internationally and it will save you a lot of time and hassle to take advantage of the services offered.

With all of these options available these days, getting your car moved safely and easily is not just a dream anymore. You can now hire a good transport company and trust your vehicle to them and can be confident that your automobile will get where you need it to go on time and in good shape.

Just be sure, no matter what company you choose to use, you always get a free quote from each one to make comparisons so you pay a cost that you can easily afford.

As you can see, moving cars to a new location really has never been as easy as it is these days. You can still select to move the vehicle on your own, but that is a big hassle for any person and hiring a company will take one big stress off your shoulders and leave you free to get other essential tasks done before you move to a new location.

Maureen Romensya invites you to visit her auto transport website to receive auto shipping quotes. Move your car without a scratch by selecting the right auto transporter company. Compare services, save up to 50%, and get the best deal.

The myriad obsessions of a handful of hopeless geeks go under the microscope in this comic mockumentary. At the age of 12, Shawn Anderson (Sean Anders) began collecting frozen food; a little over a decade later, he has over 900 rare entrees in his collection, and works as a dental hygienist to pay for the 14 freezers needed to keep his stash in pristine “never been thawed” condition. Shawn is the president of the Mesa Frozen Entrees Enthusiasts Club, and is attempting to organize the first national convention for frozen-food buffs while trying to keep his collection one step ahead of arch-rival Vince (Mike Gordon). Shawn also leads a punk-rock band, who recently embraced a Christian stance when he discovered that born-again teens were a more lucrative market than crusty punks. One of Shawn’s biggest fans is Shelly (Shelly Frasier), a cute but dorky Christian girl who works as a counselor on an abstinence hotline and has joined the frozen entree club to be near Shawn. Shawn likes Shelly, but is put off by her “wait until marriage” principles. Al (Allen Zwolle), Shawn’s bass player, also has a crush on Shelly, and hangs with the club to spend time with her, but isn’t so sure about the band’s new Christian image, or his job as a combination clown/barber. Meanwhile, Milo (John Angelo), the band’s manager, plans ways to propel them to Christian stardom while operating an anti-abortion coffeehouse, the No Choice Cafe. Never Been Thawed was the first feature film for writer and director Sean Anders, who also played the leading role and helped write the film’s music. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Filmmaker Matthew J. Powers directs this tale of triumph over tragedy detailing the remarkable career of professional skateboarder Jon Comer – who was hit by a car at age four and had his right leg amputated three years later. Despite this minor setback, however, Comer kept rolling on concrete, and eventually made a name for himself as one of the top skateboarders in the country. Additional interviews with such prolific professional skateboarders as Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, and Mike Vallely reveal just how much practice and hard work it takes for even the average two-legged person to master the art of street surfing, further highlighting Comer’s remarkable dedication to the sport. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

Never Been Blue 1922-42

Never Been Blue 1922-42

$12.78

While this tribute album is historically informative and at times quite rewarding, maybe what this world really needs is a primal survey of the very earliest recordings made under the leadership of Ted Fiorito. The two sides recorded in 1922 by the Oriole Terrace Orchestra, for example, are delightfully weird vintage salon instrumentals. Nobody will ever be able to successfully re-create the magical sound qualities of these peculiar studies for pit orchestra. Acoustically recorded without the aid of electricity, the mysterious old platters resonate with neighing reeds, corroded brass, violin and accordion. This album, in presenting an overview of Fiorito’s entire career, skips over what were possibly his best recordings. (Note that Brian Rust lists about eighteen “jazz-worthy” sides cut between 1922 and 1926 by Russo & Fiorito’s Oriole Orchestra.) The closest thing to an authentic jazz performance on this CD is “Copenhagen,” recorded in October of 1924. It is a shameless emulation of the record of the same name made six months earlier by Bix Beiderbecke & the Wolverines. Fiorito’s cover, though decorated with fiddle and squeezebox, is a passing nod to the trend of hot jazz, and stands oddly apart from the general pattern of this man’s stylistic choices. By 1926 the band is in full hotel-orchestra mode, and sappy vocalists have begun to attach themselves like lampreys to each and every three-minute record. Not to dismiss vaudevillian Ted Lewis, who sounds magnificent while coughing up lyrics at the top of his lungs, or that soapy-sounding vocal group calling themselves the Mariners. After all, why not? And everyone should cherish the opportunity to hear an authentic 1930 “Hit of the Week” recording, pressed on to flimsy lacquered cardboard and stuffed between the pages of Liberty Magazine. What’s creepy is the gradual realization that during the second-half of the 1920s, Ted Fiorito was perfecting the cottony sound of 1930s pop orchestration, a style destined to play such a vital role in Hollywood, second only to that of phenobarbital. Epiglottal boy wonder Dick Powell even shows up, trailing Busby Berkeley on a pair of sides dating from 1934. Flutes, cello and vibraphone appear as in aspic. Where’s Harpo Marx when you need him? Muzzy Marcellino and the Debutantes are most tolerable (least tiresome) on two Hawaiian novelty numbers from 1934 and ‘38. Fiorito’s 1940 “experiment” in popular big-band jazz arranging resulted in an imitation swing version of “Baby Won’t You Please Come Home.” Unfortunately, the Minnie Mouse and Bluto vocal duet makes this sound like a silly cartoon soundtrack. The Fiorito story wraps up with four sides waxed in 1942; Maureen OConnor positively protrudes from a rather smutty version of “Charlie, My Boy.” Yet most of these singers inadvertently prove that Fiorito’s legacy would be more enjoyable today had he avoided using them at all and concentrated instead on featuring his own attractive piano in addition to the talente

Have You Never Been Mellow

$43.19

The hit single “Have You Never Been Mellow” carried Olivia Newton-John right back to number one, six months after “I Honestly Love You” brought the singer to that coveted position for the first time. The title track is a masterpiece of songwriting by her producer, John Farrar, an exquisitely pleasant melody with a sunny and peaceful theme. Having covered John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads” on the Let Me Be There album in 1973, Newton-John goes back to the Denver catalog twice on this project, including her beautiful rendition of one of his lesser-known gems, “Follow Me,” with Farrar’s lush country-pop instrumental backing. “The Air That I Breathe” was a hit for the Hollies when Newton-John was filling the airwaves with “I Honestly Love You”; she does a nice interpretation of the Albert Hammond/Mike Hazlewood song here, along with an intriguing look at Rick Nelson’s “Lifestream.” The album also includes a soulful reading of Graeme Hall’s “And in the Morning” and a John Farrar/Hank Marvin composition, “It’s So Easy,” a fun melody that is not the Buddy Holly title of the same name. Years after it was recorded, Have You Never Been Mellow continued to stand as an entertaining and full album by a woman who would record hits for another 11 years. The title track opens the album and it closes with former producer Bruce Welch’s co-write of “Please Mr. Please,” a pretty pop tune that went Top Three. From beginning to end Have You Never Been Mellow is Olivia Newton-John showing why she could hold her own on the charts with as powerful a star as Elton John. Recorded at EMI Studios, London, it has impeccable sound and a special vibe. ~ Joe Viglione, Rovi

Many people wish they could go back to high school, knowing what they know as an adult; Josie Geller gets the chance to do just that in the comedy Never Been Kissed. Josie (played by Drew Barrymore) is a 25-year-old copy editor at a newspaper in Chicago. But it’s her youthful looks as much as her journalistic skills that finally win her a writing assignment: she’s ordered to enroll in high school posing as a teenager for a story on the state of America’s youth. Trouble is, Josie was a hopeless nerd in high school (called “Josie Grossie” by her classmates); she had no idea of how to fit in with the cool kids, and she’s hardly gotten any better at it in the seven years since graduation. While Josie makes fast friends with a bookish girl named Aldys (Leelee Sobieski), and also takes notice of her good-looking English teacher Mr. Coulson (Michael Vartan), she realizes for the sake of her story she has to infiltrate the cool girls’ clique, which will be impossible without someone to give her a crash course in hipness. Josie’s brother Rob (David Arquette), obviously the more style-conscious sibling, offers to sign up for the same school to act as the cool-guy friend she’ll need to fit in, but just when Josie starts making headway (and starts enjoying high school for a change), her editor changes the focus of the story — he now wants a feature on improper relations between teachers and students, which will not be good for her deepening friendship with Mr. Coulson. Never Been Kissed also features supporting performances from John C. Reilly, Molly Shannon and Jordan Ladd (the latter in a much more wholesome vehicle than her last cinematic visit to cinematic teen-town, Gregg Araki’s Nowhere). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

After avoiding the sophomore slump with relative ease, Phoenix return with their third release stripped of the post-disco house sound that helped to define them, focusing more on the songwriting side of things than any sort of dancefloor-focused groove. In fact, it takes until the fourth song, “Long Distance Call,” for anything resembling a dancefloor beat to appear, and when it does it feels like an epilogue to the wonderful “If I Ever Feel Better” off the group’s debut record. The band has definitely learned a thing or two through its evolution, placing more of an emphasis on guitar than before (Laurent Brancowitz and Christian Mazzalai sound as if they’ve been in the woodshed studying the chops of Johnny Marr and the twin-guitar attack of the Strokes’ last few records), and their performances sound more confident than ever. Gone are the sluggish country-infused downtempo numbers, replaced with a more even-keeled track sequencing and tempo throughout — almost as if they’ve been able to focus on the things that make the band so engaging to begin with, monopolize on them, and move forward in a refreshing and vibrant direction. [The 2007 edition of the album included one bonus track.] ~ Rob Theakston, Rovi

Places I Have Never Been [Bonus Tracks]

Places I Have Never Been [Bonus Tracks]

$13.58

After releasing a pair of fine albums for Arista, Willie Nile signed a deal with Geffen Records in 1982, but a dispute with the label put Nile’s recording career in limbo, and he ended up not making an album until he struck a deal with Columbia and released Places I Have Never Been in 1991. While in many respects Nile’s debut was the purest expression of his music, Places I Have Never Been is where he really nailed the elements of record making; unlike the lean, stark textures of Willie Nile or the overcooked bombast of Golden Down, Places I Have Never Been boasts a sound and an approach that really flatter Nile’s songs, and it’s certainly his most eclectic and musically adventurous major-label set. T-Bone Wolk and Stewart Lerman produced the album with Nile, and though there’s a bit more polish on these tracks than they really need, the team also matched up Nile with some stellar studio players (as well as some Grade-A guest stars, among them Roger McGuinn and Richard Thompson), and they fill out Nile’s arrangements with a lot more finesse than on his previous sets. Nile also delivered a set of terrific songs for this album, and he rarely sounded as joyous as on the title cut and “That’s Enough for Me,” as edgy and expressive as on “Café Memphis” and “Children of Paradise,” and as passionate as on “Heaven Help the Lonely,” which sounds like the hit single Nile deserved but never got. Nile’s luck with Columbia proved to be no better than he had with Arista, and his next release would be financed on his own dime and released by his own label, but that doesn’t change the fact that Places I Have Never Been is a solid and beautifully crafted record from a gifted songwriter who also knows how to rock on out, and shows both these talents to his advantage on this disc. [In 2009, Willie Nile reissued Places I Have Never Been in an expanded edition through River House Records. The new release includes early demo versions of three songs from the album, "Café Memphis," "Heaven Help the Lonely," and "Renegades," and while they lack the polish of the takes that made it to the final album, the arrangements follow similar paths and reveal that Nile's vision for this album was clearly formed long before he went into the studio. The disc closes out with a rough but fiery live recording of "Don't Die"; it generates enough excitement that one hopes an album of vintage Willie Nile concert tapes is in the works somewhere. The bonus cuts may not be quite enough by themselves to convince longtime fans to replace their aging copies of Places I Have Never Been, but considering how long the album has been out of print, anyone who's looking for it now can have it with a bonus at a reasonable price, and that's the fate this fine disc deserves.] ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Paul “Wix” Wickens – Hammond B3, Organ (Hammond);

Fever Pitch/Never Been Kissed [2 Discs]

Fever Pitch/Never Been Kissed [2 Discs]

$25.46

FEVER PITCH: The Farrelly Brothers (THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY, DUMB & DUMBER) take a slight departure from their signature breed of over-the-top, gross-out humor and opt instead for sensitive restraint with this genuinely sweet love story. Credit is due in part to the writing team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel (SPANGLISH) who adapt Nick Hornby’s popular British novel, moving it to Boston and exchanging the protagonist’s obsession with soccer for an all-consuming love of baseball. Ever since his first childhood visit to Fenway Park, easygoing schoolteacher Ben (Jimmy Fallon) has been in love with the Boston Red Sox. When he meets a successful workaholic named Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore), he warns her that his devotion to the Sox has been a problem in his past relationships. On the brink of turning 30, Lindsey is eager to make what seems like an otherwise promising romance work, and she agrees to go with Ben to opening day (of the eventful 2004 season when the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years). As baseball season proceeds, the truly obsessive nature of Ben’s passion is revealed, and a love triangle is set up in which baseball plays the role of the other woman. Lindsey’s feelings for Ben are put to the test again and again as his love for the game threatens to outweigh his feelings for her. While the film’s structure is pretty typical of a romantic comedy, FEVER PITCH offers quirky characters that ring true. Fallon and Barrymore display a genuine chemistry and Fallon proves (after leaving SNL) that he can pull off the romantic lead. With the exception of Yankee fans, FEVER PITCH should appeal to anyone who has ever really loved another person (or pastime).NEVER BEEN KISSED: Drew Barrymore gets what others only dream about in this charming, fun comedy: a second chance to right the wrongs of high school! At 25, Josie Geller is the youngest copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times, and the obvious choice to go undercover on a story about what the cool kids of high school are up to. A dorky teendubbed Grossie Josie the first time around, this time Josie is required to make friends with the popular kids in order to deliver on her assignment. Unfortunately, now that Josie has come into her own as an intelligent young woman with a career and a brain in her head, those aren’t the people she’s interested in; as she begins to develop feelings for a teacher she’s been ordered to portray badly, things start to get really complicated! Will Josie redeem herself from the mistakes she made in her high school years, or will she find herself repeating them all over again?

“>”Shocked by the Bible” sets the record straight with well-researched, controversial, myth-breaking assertions about what the Bible really does-and doesn’t-say. >Myths and misconceptions about the Bible’s content abound, and churchgoing Christians are often as confused as everyone else. Fed up with this lack of public knowledge, author Joe Kovacs has compiled some of the most crucial information for correcting people’s faulty education on what the Bible really says. If readers have ever wondered about God, the Bible, or the meaning of life, and are just not satisfied with the answers they’ve received-or if they want to learn what the Bible really says on troubling questions-”Shocked by the Bible” is an essential resource for helping both Christians and non-Christians alike. >Kovacs says, “If people actually knew what is in their Bible-the nonstop sex and violence, the hilarious comedy, and the astounding facts their pastors never told them-they’d rush to crack it open and get the surprise of their lives.” >Among the little-known facts Kovacs explores are: Jesus said NO ONE has gone to heaven except Himself The Bible never says Jesus died on a Friday or rose from the grave Sunday morning “Christmas” is not mentioned in the Bible “Easter” has vanished from the Bible God wanted to kill Moses “God the Father” is never mentioned in the Old Testament There weren’t just two of every kind of animal aboard Noah’s Ark The worst case of hemorrhoids in history is recorded in the Bible Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob were not Jews Jesus made personal appearances on Earth in the Old Testament The Bible tells you not to eat your dog or cat for dinner God ordered many of His own people to get divorced Elijah did not cheat death by riding a chariot to heaven And many more”

A Summer She Has Never Been, a Winter She Fears

A Summer She Has Never Been, a Winter She Fears

$13.58

On his cryptically titled Lo Records debut, Greek-born sound impressionist Theodore weaves together sampled morsels of organic instrumentation and natural sounds with subtle electronic inflections to create hazily sweet, gently somnolent music reminiscent of Iceland’s Múm, Japan’s Lullatone, Britain’s Plone, Norway’s Silje Nes, and perhaps especially France’s Colleen, with whom he shares a fascination with music boxes and antique-sounding instrumentation. To a great extent, Theodore forgoes the more straightforward folk and pop tropes of most of these artists, though there are subtle hints of Eastern European folk harmony, and decent amounts of acoustic guitar and other plucked string instruments here and there — including what sounds like a bouzouki on “Madam Ortance” — as well as a lusty sea shanty accordion waltz underpinning the seedy-sounding “Montmartre.” On the other hand, he’s just as likely to evoke Western classical music as familiar ambient electronic forms; the album is rife with lush, lugubrious orchestral strings, and (recalling all of the artists mentioned above) all manner of bells and chimes. Overall, though, the effect of the album is too diffuse and rarefied to sum up with any set of specific stylistic reference points, despite a constant, almost cheeky tendency for allusive arrangements and melodic borrowings. “Every Garden Has a Corner for Children” loops a polyphonic music-box snippet of “Auld Lang Syne” atop a bed of gently static white noise; “Mia Bella Fiorentina” distills the famous aria from Bizet’s Carmen into a supremely languorous, murky wash of sound; “After Silence” sneaks in an arrhythmic fragment of “Edelweiss” alongside its solemn, oddly chromatic, strummed folk dirge, and perhaps most unexpectedly, opener “I Dreamt I Was Throwing Stones at the Sea” treats Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Music of the Night” (from Phantom of the Opera) with a stately, almost classical reverence, as a sweetly chiming lullaby over lapping digital waves. Curiously, while these assorted, practically canonical melodies aren’t extensively disguised, the settings they’re presented in are sufficiently tweaked and removed from their original contexts as to make them nearly unrecognizable on a conscious level, at least at first listen, making them appear instead as haunting but unobtrusive shards of memory within a mysterious, transporting dream. Very much like a dream, A Summer She Has Never Been, a Winter She Fears can be whimsical and sweetly nostalgic, but it’s too strange and otherworldly ever to become cloying — and at times it grows downright unsettling, even without rising above a serenely submerged whisper. ~ K. It's Been Rough and Rocky Travelin'

It’s Been Rough and Rocky Travelin’

$81.98

It’s little wonder that Bear Family’s collection of Willie Nelson’s earliest recordings is titled It’s Been Rough and Rocky Travelin’: not only is it a lyrical lift from “Me and Paul” that fits neatly with their previous set, Nashville Was the Roughest — an eight-disc box of his ’60s RCA recordings — but Willie’s initial path was indeed bumpy, as he skipped through several labels before gaining success as a songwriter, and then spent a long stint at Liberty, where they were never quite sure what to do with him. All of this is documented on Bear Family’s three-disc set, which begins in 1954 when Willie cut an audition record for the Texas label Sarg, then running through all of his local independent labels — including songs he released on his own in 1957, songs that he cut while working as a DJ — then gathering all of his sides for Pappy Daily’s legendary Lone Star independent “D” before concluding with his complete recordings for the California pop label Liberty. If ever recordings could be called formative, it’s these sessions. Almost every element of Nelson’s music can be heard here, drawing equally from Western swing and honky tonk, all spun sideways by Willie’s relaxed, jazzy delivery. There is ample evidence of his sly, skillful interpretive skills and plenty of his classic songs, including “Nite Life,” “Crazy,” “Funny How Time Slips Away,” and “Hello Walls,” the latter trio all recorded at the same September 1961 session for Liberty, which arrive just about halfway through this set, where they provide the crest of the wave that begins with the spare, dusty demos that start the first disc. There is a natural progression toward this idiosyncratic sound and the halting, sometimes awkward, early indie and demo recordings on disc one point toward it, and those initial Liberty recordings — which commence with disc two — are varied, even rich, with Willie already blending hardcore country with sophisticated Sinatra-esque phrasing. Once the hits started to come — more for other artists than him — things started going awry at Liberty, with the label never quite figuring out how to get him a bigger hit. They tried a bit of everything, having him sing duets with Shirley Collie, cut a little straight Texas country and Western swing, but generally directed him toward string-saturated pop arrangements where the orchestrations and backing vocals gradually get heavier. These wind up obscuring some otherwise very good songs — written by Nelson, Hank Williams, Boudleaux Bryant, Floyd Tillman, and Fred Carter — and straighten out Willie’s phrasing, turning it into pleasantly bland countrypolitan. Bland has never been what Willie has done best and so hearing him in this silken straitjacket is odd, as he never sounded this constricted, not even when he was battling Chet Atkins at RCA. There are some period pleasures to be found in these plush strings, but it’s the rare moments when Willie comes close to shaking off that straitjacket that provide compe

Jaymes Reunion crafts sunny, big-scale power pop the likes of which haven’t been seen since the early days of Maroon 5. Lead singer Cameron Jaymes packs the youthful exuberance of the Rocket Summer’s Bryce Avary together with the mature pop sensibilities of Jon McLaughlin or Gavin DeGraw. His debut tells of love won, love craved, and of living each day to the fullest. His bright treatment of the world is infectious, and his confidence is evident of spending time on the road with notable pop and alternative acts like Parachute, Mute Math, Safetysuit, and Relient K. Jaymes goes through great effort to connect with listeners through his melodies. Right out of the gate, “Trouble” abounds with hooks big enough to catch listeners who have lost their faith in pop music. Three tracks in, the piano comes to its rightful place at the forefront on “Let It Shine,” and the talented twenty-something never looks back. It takes mere seconds for the groovy beat of “Fine” to stick in your head, and a fit urban groove drives the reticent acknowledgment of “There You Are.” The inflection and emotion in Jaymes’ crystalline voice was inspired by listening to Paul McCartney when he was a teenager, and he seems to share, if only in small measure, the former Beatles’ gift of crafting memorable pop gems. ~ Jared Johnson, Rovi Performers: Busbee – Hammond B3, Vocals (Background), Keyboards, Piano, Guitar (Acoustic); Cameron Jaymes – Hammond B3, Vocals (Background), Keyboards, Guitar (Electric), Guitar (Acoustic), Piano; Catherine Briore – Vocals (Background); Michelle Cusby – Vocals (Background); Aaron Sterling – Drums, Percussion; Braydon Nelson – Guitar (Electric); Eric Watson – Bass; Glenn Pearce – Guitar (Electric);

The Bad Plus, the leaderless trio comprised of bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson, and drummer David King, have a well-deserved reputation for arresting and mischievous readings of rock, pop, and classical pieces ranging from Aphex Twin to Gyorgy Ligeti to the Flaming Lips. As a result, their own fine compositions have often been — unfairly — overlooked. Never Stop, the Bad Plus’ eighth recording, is their first of completely original material. In a decade-long career filled with curve balls (the last being 2009’s For All I Care, their first set of all cover material and the first to feature a vocalist), Never Stop pushes their margin and extends their reach far past canonical definitions of the “jazz piano trio.” “The Radio Tower Has a Beating Heart” feels like a nearly six-minute classical intro, full of complex harmonics, roiling kit drums, and a near pastoral theme that is interspersed with angular yet lyric, swinging post-bop improvisation. The title track is nearly an uptempo pop song, set to a near marching tempo. Irony abounds in “My Friend Metatron,” with its relatively brief schematic theme that gives way to shimmering crescendos and codas, Latin tinges, and multiple time signatures. “Beryl Loves to Dance” feels more like a sprinting scherzo before it settles down into a funky groove with some knotty harmonic twists adding more irony — not gimmickry — to the mix. “Snowball” is a brief, lilting, skeletal ballad, imbued with near impressionistic piano nuances before Anderson takes the melody and asserts it with restraint and taste. “2 P.M.” works through a particularly intense jazz improvisation while keeping a taut focus on modern classical composition as a methodology. The two longest pieces are the elegant “People Like You,” where Iverson touches on Vince Guaraldi and Bill Evans, and “Bill Hickman at Home,” a haunting naturally flowing jazz ballad with added quirkiness because it is played on a slightly out of tune piano, allowing for some compelling inside-out improvisation with a nearly cinematic flourish. The set closes with handclaps on the joyous gospelized blues “Super America.” The Bad Plus’ originals have always been provocative, but being parceled between covers, their impact was unduly blunted. Hearing an entire program of them on Never Stop offers listeners a full appreciation of just how innovative and creative — and yet accessible — they are, even as they redefine and expand the role of the piano trio in jazz. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Zoot Money’s debut LP, released on EMI’s Columbia label in 1965, represents a side of the British Invasion that never quite took hold on U.S. shores — steeped in American R&B but offering a sextet’s attack on saxes and organ, theirs wasn’t enough of a guitar-oriented sound to get a fair hearing in the U.S., though the guitarist here is Andy Somers (aka Andy Summers, who takes a hot solo on “Along Came John”). That doesn’t mean it’s not worth hearing, even 40 years later — the renditions of numbers written by or associated with James Brown (“I’ll Go Crazy”), Eddie “Cleanhead” Vinson (“Back Door Blues”), et al., knocked off in a single day’s recording, is superb R&B regardless of its point of origin, and might even (and might still) turn a head or two. The big surprise, however, may be the gently swinging reinterpretation of Chuck Berry’s “Sweet Little Rock and Roller,” which manages to successfully straddle a couple of major music stylistic eras. And the Paul Williams-sung “Rags and Old Iron” is a dark, brilliant blues showcase for saxman Clive Burrows and Money’s organ, as well as Williams’ pipes. ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi Performers: Zoot Money – Vocals, Keyboards

Since writing several songs for Dave Hollister’s 2000-released Chicago ’85, Tank has been just active enough throughout the years — as a collaborator and solo artist — to maintain a constant presence in mainstream R&B. A couple weeks prior to the release of his fourth album, Now or Never, he received his fourth Grammy nomination (for appearing on Chris Brown’s “Take My Time”), yet he had two only two solo Top Ten R&B singles to his credit and had crossed the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 once. For most of this disc’s duration, Tank sticks to his solo-artist strength, providing a steady stream of low-key songs for the bedroom. Most of it simmers. The remainder boils. It’s not bound to make him much more popular, but those who dig beneath the surface of mainstream R&B will be rewarded. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Danny Morris – Keyboards; Jim Jonsin – Keyboards

Never Change

South Park Mexican (SPM) continues to polish his sound with Never Change, his most crafted album yet. The Houston, TX, rapper/producer does almost everything on this album with the exception of a few outside producers and some vocalists on the album’s many hooks. It’s the outside vocalists who characterize this album more than anything. SPM hasn’t changed much as either a producer or a rapper — his trademark snail-paced, low-toned idiom and his mid-tempo, sparse tracks are highly evident. What has changed, though, is the way SPM emphasizes the vocal hooks — they anchor each of his songs, with Ayana handling most of the hooks. Overall, Never Change sounds great. SPM’s music has never been this crafted. However, it’s also just as formulaic as it is crafted. Sure, SPM has perfected his craft, but he’s also fallen victim to its confines. He seldom ventures into new territory and seems overly content polishing up his trademark sound. And that’s unfortunate because as crafted as these songs are, they’re also a bit too routine. Nonetheless, even if many of the hooks are as catchy as hooks are intended to be, it’s worth repeating that this album sounds great. Songs like “I Must Be High” are among SPM’s best, and the inclusion of a few screwed songs is also nice, particularly since they’re distributed throughout the album and since they fit into the album’s sedate tone. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi Performers: James Hoover – Baseline; Ayana Hall – Vocals; Lord Zen – Synthesizer; Marilyn – Vocals; Ronnie Spencer – Vocals; Russell Lee – Vocals; Wally – Guitar

There's Been a Change in Me (1951-1955)

There’s Been a Change in Me (1951-1955)

$159.98

Eddy Arnold’s approach to country and his rich, expressive baritone voice always seemed closer to pop singers like Bing Crosby and Perry Como than it did to more rustic country stars like Hank Snow and Ernest Tubb, and he worked with pop songwriters out of New York as much or more than he used Nashville ones. His approach reaped dividends, certainly, and he charted countless hits in an a truly astounding seven-decade career, and if he was never fully embraced by the public as a pop singer, he brought a kind of urbane dignity and grace to country music in the bargain, prefiguring the so-called Nashville countrypolitan sound as early as 1955. This expansive seven-disc, 166-track box charts Arnold’s RCA Victor years from 1951 to 1955, and it reveals a fascinating transformation from Arnold’s early tenure as a hillbilly singer to his later stance as the man who melted country and pop together into what was essentially a whole new musical form. The early stuff here, like the opening track “Tennessee Hillbilly Ghost,” is surprisingly sturdy and energetic, and shows that Arnold could have easily made a successful career out of the rustic material that most country singers turned to, but he was really after something else, and possessing a near faultless ear for a good song, he went in an entirely different direction, and by the time he recorded songs like “I Walked Alone Last Night,” with its beautiful string ensemble backing, he was just a sweater or two away from being Perry Como. Still, Arnold never completely turned his back on Nashville, keeping his home base there, and he continued to record songs like Floyd Tillman’s “I Love You So Much It Hurts” and Merle Travis’ lovely “Bayou Lullaby,” giving them a kind of easy and sincere smoothness. He also foresaw the urban folk revival in 1955 when he released a wonderful album of traditional material, and his beautifully orchestrated and elegantly dressed up re-imagining of folk classics like “The Wayfaring Stranger,” which is included here, are among his finest tracks. Also worth noting are Arnold’s versions of the slow waltz “I Wish I Knew,” “(Now and Then, There’s) A Fool Such as I,” the organ-laced “You Always Hurt the One You Love” and Tommy Dilbeck’s “This Is the Thanks I Get (For Loving You),” which is represented here in five versions that show the evolution of Arnold’s approach to the song. As usual, Bear Family Records captures it all, and this is simply a gorgeously produced and annotated set that no Eddy Arnold fan will want to skip. ~ Steve Leggett, Rovi Performers: Marty Gold – Celeste, Organ, Piano; Marvin H. The Secret History has a history to envy. The band was built from the ruins of the much-loved group My Favorite, and carries on the tradition of making records that will be loved to death by those lucky enough to hear them. Unlike My Favorite, which sounded like a perfect blend of icy synth pop and majestic guitar pop, the Secret History aims for a more organic, more expansive, and tougher sound. The guys writing the songs — Michael Grace, Jr. and Darren Amadio (both hold-overs from My Favorite) — still write heart-stopping choruses and huge hooks, so that hasn’t changed. They just sound more like Dexy’s Midnight Runners and less like OMD now. Despite this shift, Grace’s lyrics have stayed true to his past, revealing character studies of dreamers, runaways, and the broken-hearted mix with tales of a life lived with poetry, fire, and desperation. It’s pretty far from the standard indie rock party line of mopey introspection, and it goes a long way in explaining why My Favorite had such devoted fans. It’s likely that they will fall in love with the Secret History, too, because The World That Never Was not only lives up to My Favorite’s legacy, but surpasses it. Apart from the warmer and more human sound, a big reason why are the vocals of Lisa Ronson. Grace was lucky when she answered the ad looking for a “tragic female voice,” she not only has that, but she gives the songs an emotional wallop a weaker vocalist may not have been able to deliver. When her voice twines with the group’s other vocalist, Erin Dermody, the harmonies are transcendent. Grace’s vocals are an important factor in the mix, too; his everyman vocals are a fine contrast to the rich vocals of the band’s females. Together, the three singers give the songs the grace and strength the words and melodies deserve. Not since the first two New Pornographers records have the songs, vocals, and production come together so perfectly. In fact, you could take any song on The World, say the wrenching ballad “Sex with Ghosts” or the moody rocker “Sister Rose,” stack it up against a song on Mass Romantic, and the result would be a toss-up. An impressive feat but not a surprising one, given the band’s past. Yes, My Favorite was a tough act to follow but the Secret History do it with grace and style. On The World That Never Was, they’ve crafted one of the best, most lyrical, and emotionally powerful pop albums of the past however long. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Audrey Morse – Strings; Justin Mullens – French Horn; Kurt Brondo – Accordion, Piano, Organ, Synthesizer; Darren Amadio – Guitar, Vocals; Erin

Usually the grooviest and most hip-hop connected of Ninja Tune’s acts, the Herbaliser gradually matured into a supremo live band, led by the duo of Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry but also encompassing dozens of support slots for brass, woodwinds, and percussionists, plus the usual plugged-in instruments. Still, the Herbaliser isn’t a chamber ensemble per se, but instead the type of funky big band prominent in the ’70s, the kind that could drop a blaxploitation or disco nugget one minute and get all funky over “Sunny” the next. Same as It Never Was, their first record for !K7, is in similar company to Herbaliser’s previous Take London from 2005. It’s delivered with the help of an excellent roster of musicians; tenor saxman Chris Bowden, bassist Pino Palladino, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Ross all make multiple appearances. The sound and productions are definitely up to the Herbaliser standard, but the duo may lose a few listeners when they exercise their funny bones, as they do several times here. Instead of hitting at street level, they spend a lot of time indulging in camp instrumentals like “The Next Spot” and “Amores Bongo” (it’s not “Sunny,” but it’s close). As Herbaliser have done since their debut, they excel at bringing vocal features to life; here it’s the Jean Grae guest spot “Street Karma (A Cautionary Tale),” with its eerie blaxploitation shadings. Other highlights come with “Can’t Help This Feeling” and “On Your Knees,” both featuring vocals by the leather-lunged soul-blues belter Jessica Darling. (Obviously Herbaliser have been at it for years, but it’s difficult not to hear her and think of Amy Winehouse or Sharon Jones.) There’s no doubting the Herbaliser’s ability to deliver exactly what they’re attempting, but despite the excellent playing and good vocal features (when they occur), the songwriting and choice of material make this record inferior to the usual Herbaliser standard. ~ John Bush, Rovi Performers: Jake Wherry – Arp Odyssey, Arp, Moog Bass, Bass (Electric), Guitar (Rhythm), Bass (Acoustic), Vocals, Percussion, Keyboards, Guitar, Organ; Ollie Teeba – Scratching, Vocals; Nigel Laybourne – Bass (Electric), Vocals; Ollie Parfitt – Mini Moog, Wurlitzer, Fender Rhodes, Clavinet, Organ, Keyboards, Vocals, Piano; Pino Palladino – Bass (Electric); Ralph Lamb – Clavinet, Vocals (Background), Flugelhorn, Trumpet, Vocals, Percussion; Simon Picton – Bass (Electric), Guitar (Rhyt

Enrico Pieranunzi has worked on an occasional basis with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Joey Baron since the early 1980s. These 2004 sessions add trumpeter/flugelhornist Kenny Wheeler, a perfect choice for this tightly knit group. Pieranunzi has long been one of the top jazz pianists in Europe with a gift for lyricism, whileJohnson and Baron have been a part of many important recordings as well as leading compelling CDs of their own. The primary focus is on the pianist’s thoughtful originals. Several of the songs have a melancholy air, starting with the introspective opener, featuring Pieranunzi’s Latin undercurrent with Wheeler’s emotional open trumpet. “Song for Kenny,” presumably dedicated to the trumpeter, is a midtempo bossa nova showcasing Wheeler on flugelhorn. Wheeler adds a mute for the haunting ballad “Improheart” (one of two works credited to the entire group), a powerful piece that conveys its mood without lyrics: “Impromind,” the other group improvisation, is a bit more abstract yet very accessible. The trio always make beautiful music when they have a chance to work together, and the presence of Kenny Wheeler proves to be an inspired decision. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi Performers: Kenny Wheeler – Flugelhorn, Trumpet; Enrico Pieranunzi – Piano; Joey Baron – Drums; Marc Courtney Johnson – Bass

Ever After / Fever Pitch / Never Been Kissed (Drew Barrymore Celebrity Collection)

Ever After / Fever Pitch / Never Been Kissed (Drew Barrymore Celebrity Collection)

$25.48

When he meets a successful workaholic named Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore), he warns her that being such an avid fan has been a problem in his past relationships. On the brink of turning 30, Lindsey is eager to make what seems like an otherwise promising romance work, and she agrees to go with Ben to opening day (of the eventful 2004 season when the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years). As baseball season proceeds, the truly obsessive nature of Ben’s hobby is revealed, and a love triangle is set up in which baseball plays the role of the other woman. With the exception of Yankee fans, FEVER PITCH should appeal to anyone who has ever really loved another person (or a pastime).NEVER BEEN KISSED: Drew Barrymore gets what others only dream about in this charming, fun comedy: a second chance to right the wrongs of high school! At 25, Josie Geller is the youngest copy editor at the Chicago Sun-Times, and the obvious choice to go undercover on a story about what the cool kids of high school are up to. A dorky teen dubbed Grossie Josie the first time around, this time Josie is required to make friends with the popular kids in order to deliver on her assignment. Unfortunately, now that Josie has come into her own as an intelligent young woman with a career and a brain in her head, those aren’t the people she’s interested in; as she begins to develop feelings for a teacher she’s been ordered to portray badly, things start to get really complicated! Will Josie redeem herself from the mistakes she made in her high school years, or will she find herself repeating them all over again?EVER AFTER: Danielle (Drew Barrymore), orphaned by her father’s death, is raised by a wicked and snotty stepmother and her two daughters. When she accidentally stumbles onto Prince Henry, the future King of France, the two inspire one another to resolve their respective troubles at home in this romantic fable.

“With “Never Going Back To OK”, The Afters prove that the “sophomore slumpâ€? is a myth. On their second record the Afters deliver an ingeniously crafted commercial record that will make people stand up and pay attention. From the up tempo infectious encouragement of the title track to the raw contemplative honesty of “One Moment Away”, “Never Going Back To OK” delivers the promise of being named GMA New Artist Of The Year.> “We have never been as excited about new songs as we are about the ones on this album. We truly believe it’s the best music we’ve ever made. There’s definitely a lot of dynamics…the rock songs rock harder than anything we’ve done and there are some quiet ballads with piano and strings. The songs are honest and come from the good and bad experiences that we’ve had over the last couple years and the ways that we’ve seen God work though them. The title of the album is Never Going Back to OK, which is also the name of one of the songs. It’s about never being content with where you are, but always striving to become more and making the most of the one life that we’re given.â€? – The Afters”

My Life's Been a Country Song

My Life’s Been a Country Song

$15.18

Chris Cagle says that his life is a country song in the title of his fourth album — a claim that may well be true, but based on this 2008 album his life doesn’t sound much like a country song. Cagle, like many country singers of his generation, walks the line between classic rock and mainstream country, which means there’s more twang in his voice than there is in the music, no matter how many fiddles and trebly Telecasters are pumped up in the mix. Of course, this hardly represents a change of course for Cagle, who has tread this path since his debut, nor is it really a complaint: it’s a statement of fact. Fortunately, Cagle has an earnest, plainspoken charm that keeps his music relatable — it never seems pumped up for arenas, as some rock-influenced contemporary country does — and he has to rely hard on that charm here, as he has his blandest set of songs yet. Tellingly, this is a collection that contains no originals from Cagle: every tune was penned by a pro. Some of these are quite strong — the Rhett Akins-written “Little Sundress” is a bright, summery pop tune, the lead single “What Kinda Gone” is a sturdy slice of rocking country — and some are simply pleasant pieces of product, like the Mellencamp-lite “No Love Songs.” There may be just a little bit more of the latter than there should be, but Cagle helps sell them with his neighborly drawl — enough for them to be casually enjoyable, if not quite memorable. That may not quite be what Cagle needs at this stage — he hasn’t had a big hit since 2004’s “Chicks Dig It” and could use another — but it’s a solid double down the middle, enough to keep his batting average up even if he isn’t knocking ‘em out of the park. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Gordon Mote – Hammond B3, Organ (Hammond), Piano; Mike Johnson – Lap Steel Guitar; Harry Stinson – Vocals (Background); Jonathan Yudkin – Mandolin, Fiddle; Neil Thrasher – Vocals (Background); Perry Coleman – Vocals (Background); Russell Terrell – Vocals (Background); B. Never Say Die

Never Say Die

$6.99

On a Saturday morning in May 1980, Melanie Bowen, a pretty fifteen-year-old, grabbed her leather jacket and crash helmet, yelled a goodbye, and then walked out of the front door into the sunshine for what was to be the last time in her life. Never Say Die is the true story of what followed . . . Since the motorcycle crash that left her paralyzed from the chest down, Melanie’s life has been one of extremes. She endured months of despair and indignity in rehabilitation, was in another serious car crash, and was diagnosed with breast cancer. On the plus side, she’s won medals in athletics for Wales, dabbled with the film world, and set up her own rehabilitation charity. She has also, against all the odds, found lasting happiness, having fallen in love and married the surgeon who 25 years earlier told her she would never walk again. This is Melanie’s story.

Never Gonna Touch the Ground

Never Gonna Touch the Ground

$7.98

The terms “hippie” and “flower child” are mainly identified with the baby boomer counterculture of the ’60s and early ’70s, but in fact, the hippie/flower child aesthetic has been alive and well in the alternative rock era thanks to Phish and a long list of other Grateful Dead-influenced jam bands that were formed in the ’80s, ’90s, or 2000s (Phish’s original lineup was formed in 1983, although it was in the ’90s that they became so influential). While baby boomers wrote the book on flower power, Gen-X and Gen-Y have been the ones doing the most to keep it alive in the 21st century. Sean Rawls’ San Francisco-based jam band/collective Still Flyin’, for example, wasn’t formed until 2004, although the hippie/flower child perspective is impossible to miss on Never Gonna Touch the Ground. The thing that separates this 2007 recording from other jam band efforts, however, is the fact that Still Flyin’ bring so much irony to the table. Never Gonna Touch the Ground is not only humorous — it’s downright silly at times, which is a big part of the fun. Tunes like “Aerosmith, Take Me…,” “Good Thing It’s a Ghost Town Around Here,” and “The Hottchord Is Struck” don’t take themselves too seriously, but that isn’t to say that Rawls and his friends aren’t creative. Still Flyin’ take their share of chances, combining an appreciation of the Grateful Dead and Phish with elements of everything from punk and new wave to ska and reggae. Still Flyin’ can be overly self-indulgent at times; these Bay Area residents certainly have their excesses. But even though Never Gonna Touch the Ground is slightly uneven, it is still an intriguing, lively, and unapologetically fun listen — excesses and all. ~ Alex Henderson, Rovi

Kemp is a night nurse for a beautiful but aging movie star in a medically induced coma. And with the help of her agent and a struggling young publisher, he’s concocted a can’t-fail scheme that will make them all rich. Olivia Hayden is about to receive a heavenly visitor – an angel with a message for all humankind. All it takes is a blinding light and little adjustment of her meds, and when she awakes she’ll think it was real – and they’ll have an instant best-selling book. The scheme seems foolproof. All they have to do for it to work is be good angels and stay out of trouble. But Kemp McAvoy has never been good at staying out of trouble – and he doesn’t realize there may be out-of-this-world consequences for impersonating an angel. From award-winning author Tim Downs comes this warm-hearted story of mistaken identity and unlikely redemption that will have you both laughing and looking at life from a higher perspective.

$10 Horse, $40 Saddle

$265.94

The cowboy of the open western range flourished from 1865 to about 1885. his brief heyday, he made a permanent impression that has been perpetuated by dime novels, wild west shows, and horse operas. But the picture portrayed in popular media is often historically incorrect. Don Rickey Jr. relied on the last of the real cowboys — old-time rawhiders who scoffed at the phoniness of their media image — to put the record straight.$10 Horse, $40 Saddle, based on the author’s personal acquaintance with cowboys, describes the clothes they wore, the gear they used, the arms they carried, and the trappings and tools of their calling . The book provides a wealth of information about cowpoke dress, from Stetsons and unfancy dark shirts to boots and underwear. It includes illustrations of the guns, ropes, and saddles that enabled cowboys to do their unromantic work. Rickey never stints on detail, even noting how the men rid their blankets of lice (by placing them on anthills). $10 Horse, $40 Saddle is an entertaining narrative that corrects misconceptions about cowboys and offers an authentic look at the Old West.

While participation in religion is most often perceived to be a conscious choice made without direct connections to race or ethnicity on the part of an individual, it is also apparent that religion never functions outside of both its ethno-cultural context and its ethno-cultural history, and for a large proportion of Lutheran history, this context has been overwhelmingly European and European-American. However, Christianity has become increasingly global within the last century: Latin Americans, Africans, and Asians breathe new life into a once-European and North American theological tradition. Minnesota, considered the most significant hub of Lutheranism, has concurrently become more global. From 1990–2000, the number of foreign-born residents increased by 130 percent.1 Moreover, the way people migrate has changed considerably. While European immigration in the 1900s was long, hard, and permanent, advances in travel and communication technology have made migration a more fluid journey allowing for increased communication between old world(s) and new. This situation raises a number of questions regarding depictions of Minnesota as a haven for Scandinavian, homogeneous, and inflexible Lutherans.;Worship music presents a salient religious medium capable of enabling a vivid redefinition of Minnesotan Lutheranism. How do Cambodians, who have no musical ensemble that remotely resembles a choir in their homeland, create Lutheran worship music in the Twin Cities? Why have Sudanese Lutherans, whose main source of musical inspiration is the reception of songs in dreams, stopped receiving songs in their dreams upon their arrival in the US? As a church’s most audible display of faith and most contested realm of worship, the negotiations involved in the creation of Lutheran worship music illuminate the issues at the heart of the Lutheran church today.;1Bruce Katz, “Census 2000: Key Trends and Implications for Cities,” Brookings Institution, Center for Urban and Metropolitan

”So there we were…” The stories told by Chief Petty Officers in the United States Navy, explored through a complexity lens.

$49.99

Since the later part of the 20th century, there has been growing recognition that story telling might be of value as organizations grapple with challenges regarding how to communicate with people, both inside and outside of organizations, and manage change. While there is tacit recognition of the value of a skillfully told story in the Navy, a systematic study of story, or narrative, has never been done. It is the premise of this paper that there is a missed opportunity with respect to the study, and use, of story in organizations.;This was a qualitative study that applied both narrative theory and complexity science theory to an analysis of stories told by 34 Navy Chief Petty Officers. Two methods of data collection were used, semi-structured interviews and participant observations. Data were collected at two different locations, a leadership training academy and onboard a Navy ship at sea. One hundred and twenty nine stories, along with the discussions that accompanied them, were audio recorded and supplemented with observation memos. The data were analyzed by searching for reoccurring phrases, themes and patterns.;It was found that the participants, as individuals and as a group, functioned like complex adaptive entities, and that their narratives helped them to adapt to constantly changing environments. Seven primary themes—called dominant narratives in this study—emerged from the data. The dominant narratives, and their attendant schemas, indicated that a cycle of narrative meaning develops as people use stories to make sense of the past, cope with the present, and navigate into the future. This cycle of narrative meaning repeats itself as the present becomes the past, and the future becomes the present, with stories ebbing and flowing between sense making, defining reality and prescribing schemas for how to proceed into the future.;The conclusion of the study was that through increased awareness and understanding of narrative in organizations, leaders and

America is a land of immigrants. We each have a unique story to tell. Most stories will never be known beyond the first generation’s memories. To fit in with the dominate culture; most immigrants were pressured into denying their cultural roots. They never passed on their language or cultural histories to the next generation. Memories are treasures we enjoy in our golden years. We keep them alive by sharing with the next generation. My greatest treasure has been discovering the roots of my identity, my cultural base in the Nation of Cape Verde. This knowledge gives me pride; it adds unique perspective and value to my life. This book expresses my quest to discover my cultural roots. My grandparents provided support for the first generation born in America to survive and strive for the American dream. They came to America to find a better life and future for those left behind. In 1909 Nicholau and Rosa Pires, emigrated to the United States from the Island of Fogo, Cape Verde. They had four children born in America, Anna, Margaret, Roche, and my father Vasco. One daughter, Mimi, born in Cape Verde, remained there. In 1947 at the age of six, my father brought me from Ohio to live with my Cape Verdean grandparents on Cape Cod. My grandfather was Portuguese educated and learned just enough English to get his U.S. citizenship in 1946. In his house only Kriolu (Cape-Verdean spoken language) was spoken. The neighborhood was primarily Cape Verdean and most was from the same area on the Island Fogo. Sandwich Road, in the village of Teaticket, Massachusetts, was like a transplanted village from Cape Verde set in America. My grandmother, Rose “Ke’Ke’” was the friendly visitor of the community. She would walk the length of Sandwich Road (about two miles) at least once a week to visit relatives and friends, share the news, latest gossip from the Islands, and visit those who were ill. ”The Amorous Doctor”: The French seventeenth-century text in modern translation.

$49.99

The anonymous French seventeenth-century play le Docteur Amoureux (1691) was written for the Theatre Italien, the Italian troupe acting in Paris. It incorporated the techniques of both Old French farce and the commedia dell’arte into mainstream comic modes, in the manner of Moliere but with some amusing twists. Le Docteur Amoureux remains a significant part of the French comic canon and the historical corpus of drama, yet it has never been translated into English. With prefatory commentary on the text and the period, the genres of stage performance, and the challenges involved in translating historical texts, this first translation of le Docteur Amoureux is intended to serve contemporary theater research into this rich and prolific period in the history of the French theater under Louis XIV.

”Thus does glory fade”: A history of Fort McPherson and Fort Hartsuff.

Although Fort McPherson and Fort Hartsuff played prominent roles upon the Nebraska frontier, they have both been neglected by history. While the two posts are vastly different, Fort McPherson was a major post upon the Great Platte River Road, while Fort Hartsuff was a minor post in the Loup Valley, they helped to facilitate the settling of the West. Fort McPherson played a major role in the protection of the Oregon Trail and the building of the Union Pacific Railroad across Nebraska. The Republican River Campaign of 1869 began on its parade ground, ending in the Battle of Summit Springs which broke the power of the Cheyenne Dog Soldiers over the central Plains. Though the role of Fort Hartsuff was much smaller in scope, it protected the Loup Valley from raids by Lakota while providing an economic boost to an area that had been ravaged by blizzards and locusts.;The histories follow the many patrols made by the soldiers stationed at the posts. While most of these patrols never encountered any problems, they did serve as reminders that the U.S. Army was in the area. Every time a soldier crossed the prairie he made that ground more a part of the United States and less a part of the Lakota or Cheyenne hunting range.

At thirty a professional man is younger than the business man of twenty-five. Less is expected of him; his work is less responsible; he has not been so long on his job. At forty the doctor or lawyer may still achieve an unexpected success. He has hardly won his spurs, though in his heart he well knows his own limitations. He can still say: “I am young yet!” And he is.But at fifty! Ah, then he must face the facts! He either has or has not lived up to his expectations and he never can begin over again. A creature of physical and mental habit, he must for the rest of his life trudge along in the same path, eating the same food, thinking the same thoughts, seeking the same pleasures – until he acknowledges with grim reluctance that he is an old man.I confess that I had so far deliberately tried to forget my approaching fiftieth milestone, or at least to dodge it with closed eyes as I passed it by, that my daughter’s polite congratulation on my demicentennial anniversary gave me an unexpected and most unpleasant shock.”You really ought to be ashamed of yourself!” she remarked as she joined me at breakfast.”Why?” I asked, somewhat resenting being thus definitely proclaimed as having crossed into the valley of the shadows.”To be so old and yet to look so young!” she answered, with charming voir-faire.

Jim was invited to dinner. But a bad cold kept me in bed, terrified lest my drawings should be forgotten. As he descended the staircase voices reached me, and when the fro,-uoor closed I listened, expecting somebody to come up to tell me what Jim had said. But nobody came, and when I went shyly to my mother next morning her news was bad; after dinner my sketches had been shown to him, but he did not seem to think much of them, and on my pressing my mother to tell me more I dragged the truth from her that he considered girls riding bicycles showing a great deal of stocking a low form of art. “He only likes Raphael, Michael Angelo, and Rubens,” my father said, and he invited me to cometo the National Gallery, and I followed him from masterpiece to masterpiece, humble and contrite, but resolute in my persuasions that he must come with me to Drury Lane and buy some plaster casts. He seemed to look upon the money thus expended as wasted, and when he came to the bedroom that I had converted into a studio he glanced round the walls shocked at my crude attempts to draw the Venus de Milo, the Discobolus, and some busts. The next step in my artistic education was the South Kensington Museum. He sent me to the evening classes, but he sent my brother with me, and this

Criminally unsung pianist and singer Andy Bey had the most visible career after he and his sisters Salome and Geraldine Bey broke up their performing trio after an 11-year run in 1967, but this family singing ensemble was far more than just the act that launched Andy, and he wasn’t really the focus of the group. All three siblings were highlighted equally in the trio, and their harmonies together were the ethereal kind that can only happen in a family where all involved have grown up hearing each other’s voices and phrasing every single day. The Bey trio recorded very little together, unfortunately, just a single album for RCA in 1961 and two albums for Prestige, Now! Hear!, released in 1964, and this one, ‘Round Midnight, from 1965. Part gospel, part muted R&B, part stylized blues, the Bey trio was also very much a jazz outfit, due in no small part to Andy’s underappreciated piano playing and the presence of bop veterans like Milt Hinton on bass, Osie Johnson on drums, and Kenny Burrell (who appears on about half of the tracks here) on guitar. In essence, the Bey trio sounded like a thinned-out and more jazzy, gauzy version of the Staple Singers. Highlights from this reissue, which is quite short (only around 33 minutes) by modern CD standards, are a wonderfully balanced version of Ray Charles’ “Hallelujah, I Love Her So,” a stirring take on Billie Holiday’s “God Bless the Child,” the ever expanding and ascending “Feeling Good,” and a fine rendition of the title track, Thelonious Monk’s “‘Round Midnight,” which has never been the easiest song in the world to sing effectively, but the trio nails it here in what might have been deemed a definitive version if it had actually been heard by more than a handful of people. Prestige released Andy Bey & the Bey Sisters in 2000, which includes both the trio’s albums for the label on one disc, and that is definitely the way to go, although this short set does do a decent job showing off the range and talents of thi…

A collection of twisted takes on what it is to be and live in the world of Kinky.’Scuse Me While I Whip This Out is a collection of twisted takes on life by Kinky Friedman. As always, the Kinkster’s work is witty, wise and wonderful, and reads as if it was written by a slightly ill, modern-day Mark Twain. These pieces taken in their totality represent a wide-ranging new direction for Friedman, building on his already well-established fan base as a mystery writer and musician. In ‘Scuse Me While I Whip This Out Kinky will deal with such subjects as marriage, his pets, hanging out with Joe Heller, Bob Dylan, sleeping at the White House, the Peace Corps, country music, travelling, Americana, cigars, Don Imus, and talent. This mixture may well be the funniest as well as the best non-fiction work he has ever done. Many of the pieces are totally new and have never been published anywhere before. Others have appreared in his vastly successful column in the award-winning Texas Monthly magazine. As hilarious and irreverent as David Sedaris, as dark and passionately twisted as George Carlin- and illustrated by the hermetic genius John Callahan-’Scuse Me While I Whip This Out is destined to be one of the most side-splitting, thought-provoking books on the market today.

Graham Nash is a Professional Reflexologist and part-time presenter on Britain’s smallest commercial radio station – Two Loch Radio – in north west Scotland. He travelled to Switzerland 30 years ago attached to a school party and made a fool of himself at Basel station. Scarred, he hadn’t been abroad since. Wife, Val, crossed the Channel in a Force 9 gale to attend an agricultural show in Paris in 1982. Didn’t get placed and hadn’t been abroad since. Rory is the scarred teenage offspring of the above scarred parents and had never been abroad. Pooling their dearth of travel experiences, adding a total lack of camping knowledge and a criminal lack of foreign language skills, the three Nash’s embarked on a three month-long ramble around Europe in their motor home – ‘Harvey the RV’ – in the Spring of 2010. Their ‘Graham and Val’s Mid Life Crisis Tour 2010′ took them through ten countries in 100 days. During their epic voyage they immersed themselves – which is to say, drowned – in the languages they encountered, attempted a collective nervous breakdown in Italy, observed role-play sex education in a German swimming pool, stayed on an Austrian campsite managed by Stewart Grainger, scootered down a Swiss alp, became ensnared in the Brugge cycle grand-prix and enjoyed several incomprehensible conversations with restaurant waiters – one of which resulted in a meal concluding with a glass of warm milk. ‘Un Portion of Chips, Bitte’ is the hilarious day-by-day account of their 6000 mile trip, the only part of which was planned was the return ferry crossing to and from Calais. Their motto? ‘Look stupid, act stupid, speak rubbish’; and they did!

We shall attempt to prove in the following chapter that the great crisis of his life, his conversion, is essentially a psychological problem. Newman himself has made” psychology the foundation of religious science. It is the “illative sense,” i.e. the personal equation, which gives the casting vote. As in the Imitation of Christ, so in Newman’s writings, religion is above all a dialogue between God and Conscience. All through his life Newman has been given to analysis and introspection. Never has any religion been more personal and more subjective. A French Protestant clergyman, M. Kaoul Gout, in an ingenious book has even gone so far as to see a morbid phenomenon in this hyper-analytical tendency. His contention is that the abuse of introspection has developed in Newman the hereditary germs of melancholia. If nothing could be more complicated than the personality of Newman, nothing could be simpler and more uniform than his life. It is entirely dominated by the religious idea. God is his first and his last thought. The material universe hardly .K/ … exists for him. He lives in the world without being of the world. And therefore the external history of this noble existence, which fills almost the whole of the nineteenth century (1801-91) and which for sixty years has been given over to the discussion of men, may be summed up in a few lines. The Italian journeymay be said to be almost the only external incident of his biography. And its only dates are the publication of his works. His origin and heredity deserve to arrest our attention. It has often been said—and with a great deal of truth—in reply to those fanatics who ass

My complete surrender to the Lord as a young man of 22, was the best decision I ever made. The second best decision was to marry Lois Tyson, whom I met at Bob Jones University in 1951.I spent my boyhood days, first on a farm and then in a small town during the years of the Great Depression of the 1930s. Then came World War 2, when I was in high school. It was a long war; 1941-45.As soon as I graduated I went into the U.S. Navy and served as a seaman aboard the U.S.S. Pocono, the Flagship of the Atlantic Fleet. After leaving the Navy in 1946, I attended the University of Pittsburgh by virtue of the G.I. Bill, which paid college tuition and books for World War 2 servicemen. I graduated in June 1950, with a major in Business Administration and a minor in History.During my senior year at Pitt, I was under deep conviction of my need of complete surrender to the Lord. I had been raised in a Christian home and we went to a fundamental church, but I had too many distractions (the war years and getting a college education) to get serious about spiritual things. However, the “Hound of Heaven” tracked me down and in December of 1950, I made that greatest decision of all, to completely surrender to the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord. I said, “Lord Jesus, I am yours and You are mine.” I never looked back. Thus began a great journey of faith and service. Within the pages of “…but to minister,” I tell this wondrous story. I hope you enjoy it.God bless you.
