How Science
How do I become a computer forensics specialist?

I am in college right now on a Computer Science major. I wanted to be a policeman but my parents aren’t comfortable with it. I heard about this career and want to know more about it as I would love to help fight crime. Thanks!

The Computer Science major you are in now will give you some good background but you will need some additional certifications and training.

The good news for your parents is there are some jobs in this field outside the police career. I have many wonderful friends who are policemen and they will all tell you it is stressful and difficult. One need only to look at divorce stats for policemen to see that.

Also, you might find some work in government areas (FBI, Customs, U.S. Attorney, Homeland Security) involving computing forensics, computing security, cryptography, etc.

I have given you a link to a super sharp forensics guy I know. Just from going through all the links on his site you will be able to get some ideas of what you need to do. Here are some of the certs you will need to work towards:

All Examiners hold multiple certifications in a variety of disciplines, including:
•IACIS Certified Forensic Computer Examiner.
•EnCE EnCase Certified Examiner.
•IACIS Certified Electronic Evidence Collection Specialist.
•IACIS Advanced Seizure and Processing of DOS, Windows Based Computers Certification.
•IACIS Advanced Forensic Network Essentials Certificate.
•SCERS (Seized Computer Evidence Recovery Specialist, FLETC).
•FLETC (Federal Law Enforcement Training Center).
•HTCN Advanced Certification, Computer Crime Investigator.
•HTCN Advanced Certification, Computer Forensic Technician.
•EnCase™ Advanced Computer Forensics Certificate.
•ACFS Certified Fraud Specialist.
•California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Security and Investigative Services license 20551.

How to Relate Science and Religion: A Multidimensional Model

How to Relate Science and Religion: A Multidimensional Model

$28

“Today there are two very different views concerning the relation of science and religion. On the one hand is the view that there is no limit to the competency of science, including its ability to subsume the traditional domains of religion and values. On the other hand is the view that science ought to itself be shaped in a significant way by religion. In this book these opposing views are presented, critically discussed, and replaced with a badly needed conciliatory model of science and religion.>Written by the Templeton Prize-winning author Mikael Stenmark, “How to Relate Science and Religion” points an existing way forward in the effort to reconcile what are arguably to two most powerful cultural forces of our time. Stenmark succinctly lays out the central issues of the debate and shows what is at stake for the nature and advancement of human knowledge. The outcome of Stenmarkbs work is the construction of a bmultidimensional modelb of science and religion that refuses to automatically prioritize either. Stenmark shows the ongoing though shifting value of both science and religion played out as a dynamic, evolving relationship.”

Science & Christianity: Four Views

Science & Christianity: Four Views

$20

“Christians have long debated the relationship of science and faith. With the rise of Darwinism, however, the issue took on new significance. Darwinism appeared to undermine the authority of the Bible and the credibility of Christianity by freeing science of the need for a Creator. Rethinking the relationship between science and Christianity quickly became a priority. How does a faithful Christian respond to the pronouncements of contemporary science? Is science a help or a hindrance to belief? Are science and the Bible in conflict?>At the beginning of the twenty-first century, Christians continue to wonder whether faith and science are partners or opponents. Rated: NASynopsis: A man has been pronounced dead, but the heart is still beating, the cells still dividing. Even after someone is clinically dead’, life in many parts of the body carries on for hours, days, and even weeks. The Science of Death broaches the morbid topic of death by offering an entertaining and enlightening look at the process of dying, which in some cases, can be stopped, or even reversed. After ignoring death for most of its history, the medical and scientific communities have begun to focus their attention on how our bodies behave on the journey to eternity. Often seen as an event, dying is actually a process. In the Science of Death, scientists seek to unravel the complex series of events that comprise the stages of death. Combining a unique style with startling information and events, this program uses state-of-the-art 3D graphics, captivating cinematography, and the latest science to explore the hidden life after death.

Surprised by Meaning: Science, Faith, and How We Make Sense of Things

$17

“We live in an age when the growth of the Internet has made it easier than ever to gain access to information and accumulate knowledge. But information is not the same as meaning, nor is knowledge identical with wisdom. Many people feel engulfed by a tsunami of facts in which they can find no meaning. >In thirteen short, accessible chapters McGrath, author of the bestselling The Dawkins Delusion, leads the reader through a nontechnical discussion of science and faith. How do we make sense of the world around us? Are belief in science and the Christian faith compatible? Does the structure of the universe point toward the existence of God?>McGrath’s goal is to help readers see that science is neither anathema to faith, nor does it supersede faith. Both science and faith help with the overriding human desire to make sense of things. Faith is a complex idea. It is not a blind leap into the dark but a joyful discovery of a bigger picture of wondrous things of which we are all a part.”

$5.99

Forty-two million American women – those between the ages of forty and sixty – experience the most stress of anyone in the world. And it shows, inside and out: from wrinkles and gray hair to the cells at the very core of our bodies. In Stress Less, prominent health and science journalist Thea Singer explores what the new science of stress can tell us about how to turn back the cellular clock. Drawing on cutting-edge information from a who’s who of stress researchers, including Nobel Prize-winning biologist Elizabeth Blackburn, Singer explains how women’s bodies react to stress, from shifts in mood to changes at a genetic level that affect how women look and feel, and even how long they live. But Singer also details how easy lifestyle changes can reduce the frequency and intensity of the body’s reactions – thus minimizing the hazardous effects of stress and giving us the necessary tools to feel better, look younger, and live longer.

How to Mellify a Corpse: And Other Human Stories of Ancient Science & Superstition

How to Mellify a Corpse: And Other Human Stories of Ancient Science & Superstition

$5.99

In How to Mellify a Corpse, Vicki León brings her particular hybrid of history and humor to the entwined subjects of science and superstition in the ancient world, from Athens and Rome to Mesopotamia, the Holy Land, Egypt, and Carthage. León covers subjects as diverse as astronomy and astrology, philosophy and practicalities of life and death (including the titular ancient method of embalming), and ancient mechanical engineering. How to Mellify a Corpse of course invokes legendary thinkers (Pythagoras and his discoveries in math and music, Aristotle’s books on politics and philosophy, and Archimedes’ “Eureka” moment), but it also delves deeply into the lives of everyday people, their understanding and beliefs. A feast for the curious mind, How to Mellify a Corpse is not only for those with an interest in the experimental: it’s for anyone who’s inspired by the imagination and ingenuity humanity uses to understand our world.

What can it tell us? What can it not tell us? What challenges does it offer to Christian faith? How should a Christian respond?>Originally published under the title Philosophy of Science, this revised volume surveys how views of science have developed and changed over time, especially since the Kuhnian revolution of the 1960s. Now updated to reflect the current discussions of intelligent design and postmodern views of science, Science & Its Limits offers readers a thoughtful perspective on current trends and useful advice on how to approach faith and science issues.”

The news that the Get Up Kids were reuniting to go on tour to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their landmark emo-pop classic Something to Write Home About was exciting enough. That they found the time and desire to hit the studio was potentially just as thrilling. When the band hung it up in 2005 due to all sorts of internal conflicts, it really seemed like there would never be another Get Up Kids record. Now that they’ve done it, the question becomes does it add to their legacy or detract from it? The verdict falls strongly in the former camp. The 2010 EP Simple Science may not break any new ground for the band and it may not measure up to their best, most powerful work, but it does deliver four tracks that, for the most part, have all the passion, hooks, and emotion of vintage Kids records. Certainly Matthew Pryor’s vocals sound as brutally honest as ever, and the rest of the band sounds like they are having a blast playing together again. The only new wrinkles are the stripped-down production, which most likely stems from the group releasing the record themselves, and the increased reliance of atmospheric keyboards that give the songs a spacy sound. These are most evident on the closing track “How You’re Bound,” which sounds like it was turned inside-out and dipped in reverb. Simple Science won’t take the place of Something in the hearts of Get Up Kids fans, but it’s a welcome comeback all the same. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi

One year following the entry of “Aftermath” into the British charts, Nightmares on Wax released a first full-length that rivalled any other techno debuts of the time, excepting only its immediate predecessor in the Warp catalog — LFO’s Frequencies. The “Aftermath” blueprint (skeletal bleep techno with the dark undercurrents cropping up in much post-rave techno) is in full force on several tracks, like the follow-up club hit “Dextrous” and the depth-plumbing bass of “A Case of Funk.” Elsewhere, though, NoW expand the sound of bleep in several intriguing directions: “Coming Down” represents with paranoid breakbeats wrapped around a minimalist framework; “Playtime” sounds reminiscent of Soul II Soul; “How Ya Doin’” is a great old-school shout-out track; and “Mega Donutz” brings a British spin to playful American hip-hop like De La Soul. Unjustly relegated to the history bins (and even more of a relic because of its radical differences from the later NoW catalog), A Word of Science is much more than just the other great early Warp LP. ~ John Bush, Rovi

Science Is Culture: Conversations at the New Intersection of Science + Society

$5.99

We are on the cusp of a twenty-first-century scientific renaissance. Science is driving our culture and conversation unlike ever before, transforming the social, political, economic, aesthetic, and intellectual landscape of our time. Today, science is culture. As global issues — like energy and health — become increasingly interconnected, and as our curiosities — like how the mind works or why the universe is expanding — become more complex, we need a new way of looking at the world that blurs the lines between scientific disciplines and the borders between the sciences and the arts and humanities. In this spirit, the award-winning science magazine Seed has paired scientists with nonscientists to explore ideas of common interest to us all. This book is the result of these illuminating Seed Salon conversations, edited and with an introduction by Seed founder and editor in chief Adam Bly.

BACKGOUND MATERIAL FOR TEACHERS, Book One, surveys the first seventeen Old Testament books for Bible teachers of youth and adults. Teachers must build a firm foundation for studying/teaching the Old Testament by answering ten questions:What is the Old Testament? Who wrote the Old Testament? Where, When, Why and How was the Old Testament written? What are three major features of the Old Testament: Revelation, Inspiration and Preservation? How should we study the Word of God? Why should you memorize the Word of God? When should one read the Word of God?Teachers must also build a personal knowledge through surveying the Old Testament utilizing four areas of study: INTRODUCTORY MATERIAL for the first two sections of the Old Testament; BACKGROUND INFORMATION about the author and book; “TEACHER’S STUDY GUIDE” for each of the 17 books; PRESENTATION MATERIAL for teachers [a teaching survey presented by a Scripture verse or passage].Following high school, a Bachelor of Science degree was received from Piedmont College, Demorest, GA plus a Georgia Teacher’s Professional Certificate. Then came the Army Security Agency and three years later came employment with the National Security Agency, Washington, DC. Meeting Edith Campen from North Carolina led to marriage, February 1, 1957.A year after marriage, God called me to the ministry. Graduating from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Ft. Worth, TX with a Bachelor of Divinity (updated to Masters of Divinity) and Masters in Religious Education (updated to Masters of Arts), God directed me to serve Him.For some 50 years, it was a pleasure to serve God and people in churches and classrooms as Minister of Youth, Minister of Education, Minister of Education/Administration, and Minister of Pastoral Care. It was a joy to teach this Old Testament Bible Survey Course to ninth grade students at Cypress Community Christian School, Houston, TX

Conflict, Contradiction, and Contrarian Elements in Moral Development and Education

Conflict, Contradiction, and Contrarian Elements in Moral Development and Education

$85

The premise of this book is that individuals and societies have an inexorable urge to morally develop by challenging the assumptions of the previous generation in terms of what is right and wrong. The focus is on the nature and functional value of conflicts and challenges to the dominant moral and social values framework. Through this analysis, individuals develop moral character through conflict with their local authority figures, including parents. The moral structure of societies evolves through intergenerational challenges to and contradictions with the dominant social order. The book is divided into three parts to help frame this discussion:Part I directly takes up the issue of resistance as it occurs at a cultural level, and the implications of such resistance for moral education and socialization.Part II explores the normative forms of adolescent resistance and contrarian behavior that vex parents and teachers alike.Part III brings back the issue of societal structure and culture to illustrate how negative features of society–such as racial discrimination and economic disparity–can feed into the construction of negative moral identity in youth posing challenges to moral education. Taken together, this collection presents a rich counterpoint to the pictures of moral growth as the progressive sophistication of moral reasoning or the gradual accretion of moral virtues and cultural values. It will benefit those in developmental, social, and cognitive psychology, as well as sociology, political science, and education.

Analyzing the role of journalists in science communication, this book presents a perspective on how this is going to evolve in the 21st century. The book takes three distinct perspectives on this interesting subject. Firstly, science journalists reflect on their “operating rules” (science news values and news making routines). Secondly, a brief history of science journalism puts things into context, characterizing the changing output of science writing in newspapers over time. Finally, the book invites several international journalists or communication scholars to comment on these observations thereby opening the global perspective. This unique project will interest a range of readers including science communication students, media studies scholars, professionals working in science communication and journalists.

Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion

Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion

$42.5

Is religion a positive reality in your life? If not, have you lost anything by forfeiting this dimension of your humanity? This book compares the theology of Tillich with the psychology of Jung, arguing that they were both concerned with the recovery of a valid religious sense for contemporary culture. Paul Tillich, Carl Jung and the Recovery of Religion explores in detail the diminution of the human spirit through the loss of its contact with its native religious depths, a problem on which both spent much of their working lives and energies. Both Tillich and Jung work with a naturalism that grounds all religion on processes native to the human being. Tillich does this in his efforts to recover that point at which divinity and humanity coincide and from which they differentiate. Jung does this by identifying the archetypal unconscious as the source of all religions now working toward a religious sentiment of more universal sympathy. This book identifies the dependence of both on German mysticism as a common ancestry and concludes with a reflection on how their joint perspective might affect religious education and the relation of religion to science and technology.Throughout the book, John Dourley looks back to the roots of both men’s ideas about mediaeval theology and Christian mysticism making it ideal reading for analysts and academics in the fields of Jungian and religious studies.

”Bodies that tell”: Physiognomy, criminology, race and gender in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Italian literature and opera.

$49.99

This dissertation explores the impact of Cesare Lombroso and the positivist school of criminal anthropology on Italian literature and opera in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.;The first chapter traces the rise of positivist science in late nineteenth-century Italy within the context of building Italian national consciousness. It explores Lombroso’s dominant role in Italian positivism, showing the methods that Lombroso used to successfully assert himself as the most important scientist and indeed intellectual of his era. The chapter ends with a discussion of why the theories promulgated by Lombroso and his school were particularly appealing to authors of literature and opera.;The second chapter analyzes criminal anthropology’s direct interventions into literary criticism, focusing on four positivist analyses of the poet Leopardi. It demonstrates that Lombroso and his disciples made a conscious effort to knock Leopardi off the pedestal upon which Francesco De Sanctis had ensconced him in favor of Giosue Carducci, a poet who better fit their mold of progressivism.;The four remaining chapters examine how specific authors and composers were impacted by Lombroso and criminal anthropology.;The third chapter analyzes the Lombrosian presence in Giovanni Verga’s short stories, focusing on manifestations of Lombroso’s criminal and prostitute in Verga’s Vita dei campi.;The fourth chapter instead examines the spiritualistic tales of Luigi Capuana, an author who entered into a friendly debate with Lombroso which lasted a quarter of a century regarding the nature of the spirit world. The fifth chapter is on two operas. The first, Verdi and Arrigo Boito’s Otello, is an opera in which the portrayal of the protagonist is distinctly informed by Lombroso’s racist ideology. The second, Mascagni and Daspuro’s L’amico Fritz, is similarly molded by Lombroso’s conflicted writings on Jews and gypsies.;The last chapter examines Grazia Deledda’s problematic relationship to

Urban sociology has recently recognized the important function that local institutions serve in poor neighborhoods via their role as arbiters between community members and the outside world. These institutions provide crucial services, they serve as centers for social interaction, and they often dictate the range of resources that are available for a community. Local political organizations are no exception. Throughout American urban history, political organizations were critical in shaping the political and economic opportunities available to people living in poor communities, whether it was by working hard to incorporate waves of new immigrants, working behind the scenes to exclude other groups, or using their clout to levy goods and services for their constituents.;The same is true today, yet contemporary social science has paid little attention to how these organizations work, how and why they might differ from their historical predecessors, or what these differences might mean for how resources get distributed within and across poor communities. This work revives attention to the local political organization by focusing on a contemporary adaptation of one of America’s oldest political institutions—the machine organization. In particular, I examine the partnership of machine organizations with nonprofit community-based organizations (or “CBOs”) in an institutional arrangement that I call a “machine-CBO.”;I draw on data from an ethnographic case study of a machine-CBO in the North Ward of Newark, New Jersey to examine how local political organizations structure political and economic opportunities in poor communities and how, in turn, these organizations are structured by changes both within and beyond the community. I show, for instance, that by orchestrating electoral turnout and mobilizing a committed cadre of workers on its behalf, political organizations can decide democratic outcomes in their communities. By controlling patronage, they can determine who

Written and set in the last years of the nineteenth century, Dracula wrestles with a loss of confidence in how the Victorian British deal with their problems. It challenges the certainty that domesticity, dedication, faith, and science will make right all wrongs. The novel’s protagonists bring all of the Victorians’ methods to bear against Count Dracula: science, weapons, medicine, rationality, temperance. However, even as they take his life, in many ways they fall short of resolving the problems he poses. They kill him by resorting to methods that abrogate the progress of the nineteenth century, and even in death, they know almost nothing about his kind, leaving him as a symbol of all their fears, of the dark unknown that lies just beyond the borders of the civilized world.;This thesis examines the challenges that Dracula poses to late nineteenth century British confidence in Victorian methods and values. I explain how Stoker uses scientific reasoning, documentation, travel, magic and the occult, and sexuality to confront Victorian norms and progress. I show how the novel raises a mirror up to the age, to show its reflection, or lack thereof.

Since the later part of the 20th century, there has been growing recognition that story telling might be of value as organizations grapple with challenges regarding how to communicate with people, both inside and outside of organizations, and manage change. While there is tacit recognition of the value of a skillfully told story in the Navy, a systematic study of story, or narrative, has never been done. It is the premise of this paper that there is a missed opportunity with respect to the study, and use, of story in organizations.;This was a qualitative study that applied both narrative theory and complexity science theory to an analysis of stories told by 34 Navy Chief Petty Officers. Two methods of data collection were used, semi-structured interviews and participant observations. Data were collected at two different locations, a leadership training academy and onboard a Navy ship at sea. One hundred and twenty nine stories, along with the discussions that accompanied them, were audio recorded and supplemented with observation memos. The data were analyzed by searching for reoccurring phrases, themes and patterns.;It was found that the participants, as individuals and as a group, functioned like complex adaptive entities, and that their narratives helped them to adapt to constantly changing environments. Seven primary themes—called dominant narratives in this study—emerged from the data. The dominant narratives, and their attendant schemas, indicated that a cycle of narrative meaning develops as people use stories to make sense of the past, cope with the present, and navigate into the future. This cycle of narrative meaning repeats itself as the present becomes the past, and the future becomes the present, with stories ebbing and flowing between sense making, defining reality and prescribing schemas for how to proceed into the future.;The conclusion of the study was that through increased awareness and understanding of narrative in organizations, leaders and

The idea of metaphor, as a figure of connection, transportation, and communication, suggests an approach to a central intellectual problem in early modern England: how do we reconcile the fact of the mind’s apparent intangibility with its very tangible control over the physical body? My dissertation argues that in the seventeenth century the burgeoning discipline of early modern neuroscience emerged by drawing on a field of metaphors shared by other intellectual domains, and, as importantly, that these metaphors were used in those other domains to describe the soul. At heart, the period was wrestling with the problem of how the immaterial soul could hold sway over the material body. While today we see this as a question of Cartesian duality, the quandary has an earlier origin: the pervasive efforts in the 1600s to bridge the divide between the body and the soul. By 1664, when Thomas Willis published his Cerebri anatomi—the first neuroanatomical text—the brain was broadly accepted as the locus of the rational soul. Yet how the brain came to be viewed as the organ in which the link between the material and the immaterial was forged depended, I argue, upon the scientific deployment of literary metaphors to describe that connection between soul and body. In its capacity for bridging the gap between spiritual substance and immaterial matter, metaphor renders the soul an object of empirical inquiry by tying it to the brain.

”The Stars Belong to Everyone”: The rhetorical practices of astronomer and science writer Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg (1905–1993).

$49.99

Astronomer and science writer Dr. Helen Sawyer Hogg (University of Toronto) reached a variety of audiences through different rhetorical forms. She communicated to her colleagues through her scholarly writings; she reached out to students and the public through her Toronto Star newspaper column entitled “With the Stars,” which she authored for thirty years; she wrote The Stars Belong to Everyone, a book that speaks to a lay audience; she hosted a successful television series entitled Ideas; and she delivered numerous speeches at scientific conferences, professional women’s associations, school programs, libraries, and other venues.;Adapting technical information for different audiences is at the heart of technical communication, and Sawyer Hogg’s work exemplifies adaptation as she moves from writing for the scientific community (as in her articles on globular cluster research) to science writing for lay audiences (as in her newspaper column, book, and script for her television series). Initially she developed her sense of audience through a male perspective informed largely by her scholarly work with two men (Harlow Shapley and her husband, Frank Hogg) as well as the pervasive masculine culture of academic science.;This dissertation situates Sawyer Hogg in what is slowly becoming a canon of technical communication scholarship on female scientists. Toward this end, I discuss how she rhetorically engaged two different audiences, one scholarly and one popular, how Sawyer Hogg translated male dominated scientific rhetoric to writing for the public, and how science writing helped her achieve her professional goals. Complementing the archival research in addressing the questions of this study, I employ social construction analysis (also known as the social perspective) for my research methodology. She was ahead of her time and embodied the social perspective years before its definition as a rhetorical concept. In short, my study illuminates one scientific woman’s voice,

”The balance-sheet of nature”: Calculating the New York farm, 1820–1860.

$49.99

To understand how nineteenth-century people understood the natural world, historians of science must investigate their interactions with the living systems that surrounded most of them—to examine, that is, their changing knowledge of their farms. This dissertation focuses on the period between 1820 and 1860, when the developing market economy drastically altered relations between Americans and their farms. With its rapidly shifting, highly productive agriculture and its location as a transport and communication hub, New York State became a major center of these agricultural changes. At the same time, New York’s vibrant agricultural societies and agricultural journals established a diverse community devoted to “agricultural improvement.” Bringing together a variety of discourses, practices, and people, improvement became a central knowledge-making institution of the antebellum period, one encompassing many forms of expertise: chemistry, geology, pomology, botany, meteorology, animal and vegetable physiology, mechanics, architecture, animal-judging, accounting, and mensuration. This dissertation analyzes the diaries and print productions of New York’s “improving” farmers and explores the ways that new market values changed how they understood and interacted with agricultural landscapes. By developing social standards for the reliable propagation of productive organisms like fruit trees, by identifying regions “adapted” to specific forms of production, and by rendering nutritional relationships on the farm as transactions using agricultural chemistry, they worked to turn their landscape into a rationalized site of production. In following improvers, the dissertation thus illuminates the spread of market-centered ways of accounting for nature, and works to integrate environmental history and the history of science.

This dissertation is motivated by the following question: what spatial formation structures the living spaces poor Black people reside in and what effect does it have on their subjectivity? “They imprison the whole population” is a transnational comparative study of the “prisonization” of poor Black communities in the United States and South Africa from the dawn of the twentieth century to present. It seeks to understand the ways prisons affect society beyond focusing on rising incarceration rates. I argue that poor Blacks live under what I call symbiotic carcerality: prison techniques and spatial forms deployed across Black living space. I focus on how people are shaped by the carceral environment in which they live. To illustrate its impact, I examine how gender performance, physical health, body shape, aesthetics, diet, housing, mobility, and citizenship are formed and circumscribed by the symbiont circle between carceral space and the living space of poor Blacks.;I write at the convergence of what Black prison intellectual Assata Shakur called the “minimum security prison on the streets”, Michel Foucault’s notion of the “carceral”, and what human geographers McKittrick and Wood’s term “Black geographies”. Academic work in Black masculine studies (gender studies), critical prison studies, Marxism, Black cultural studies, and comparative studies of race and ethnicity has contributed much to my theoretical framework, and to the mix of humanities and social science methods I use. My research has uncovered a powerful yet submerged tradition in Black American and Black South African literature that meditates on the ubiquity of prison punishment in the lives of “free” people. Its primary source is the writings of Black prisoners. Through stories, memoirs, poetry, social commentary, and letters, they articulate the entrenchment of carceral punishment in poor Black communities. Black literary artists, activists, and scholars also contribute to theorizing carceral space.

Political cartoons are a valuable, though often neglected, source of historical information and understanding. In Great Nations Still Enchained, Roy Douglas uses these cartoons as a lens through which to examine the examine the political and social arenas of Europe, and the events which changes the landscape. Douglas includes cartoons from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Russia, the major powers of the day. These drawings illustrate how those people living in the midst of the events discussed perceived and interpreted them, acting as a barometer of public opinion, and reflecting their assumptions and ideas. As the cartoons are taken from various countries, they display how different, and often conflicting national attitudes developed. The period examined here, between 1878 and 1914, holds a particular significance in European history: 1878 marked the Congress of Berlin, which removed (or postponed) the very real risk of war between some of the Great Powers’, and was the last effective assertion of the Concert of Europe. After this time, the Powers drifted increasingly into smaller, limited alliances, which, among other factors, played a large part in the genesis of the First World War. Douglas has brought his gift for concise, clear explanation to this period, as has in his previous books Between the Wars 1919-1935 and The World War: 1939-1945. His work has brought currency and vitality to events which can often be lost in actual accounts. It should be of interest to any reader in European history and political science.

$49.99

In this dissertation I explore how persons who identify with a diagnosis of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) fit it and its descriptions into the everyday practice of managing their suffering. I explore this topic through examination of research material derived from in-depth interviews, ethnographic fieldwork at the 2005 and 2006 Obsessive Compulsive Foundation conferences, observation of internet support communities, and extensive literature reviews of the professional, expert-produced research directed at laypersons and mental health and other professionals. Foregrounding the concepts of medicalization, Hacking's "making up people," subjectivity, and practice, and drawing upon a wide variety of social scientific literature, including texts in the sociology of mental health, medical sociology, and science and technology studies, I examine three contexts in which management is carried out: within the context of internet support communities, where expert and lay produced "classes" of OCD are negotiated, within the context of public and domestic spaces, and within the context of the ill-defined variety of OCD known as "hoarding." I find that although identifying with OCD and its descriptions represses certain possibilities—especially the use of professional forms of therapy that fall outside the expert recommendations—it simultaneously opens up new possibilities, such as providing sufferers access to certain forms of professional treatment, attractive explanations for their problems (notably shifting responsibility from the character to the body), and a means for organizing with like minded sufferers. Still, even though the diagnosis facilitates the production of new realities within the lives of sufferers, the experience of suffering is not uniform, nor is it static, but instead involves continuous negotiation of numerous relational variables, including biographical/demographic features, space, access to emotional and

112 Mercer Street: Einstein, Russell, Godel, Pauli, and the End of Innocence in Science

112 Mercer Street: Einstein, Russell, Godel, Pauli, and the End of Innocence in Science

$0.99

As World War II wound down and it became increasingly clear that the Allies would emerge victorious, Albert Einstein invited three close friends-all titans of contemporary science and philosophy-to his home at 112 Mercer Street in Princeton, New Jersey, to discuss what they loved best, science and philosophy, and perhaps to ponder their vision of the postwar world. His guests were the legendary philosopher and pacifist Bertrand Russell; the boy wonder of quantum physics Wolfgang Pauli; and the brilliant logician Kurt Gödel, whose “incompleteness” theorems a decade before had shattered the link between logic and mathematics. Their casual meetings took place far from the horrific battlefields of the war and the (then) secret lair of experimental atomic physicists, Los Alamos, New Mexico. Just how many times they met and precisely what they discussed remains a matter of conjecture. All four men were well along in years by scientific standards-where youth tends to dominate with major breakthroughs-and they had to be aware of what Feldman terms “the pathos of science,” that their own work would one day be superseded. As they met, they and their scientific brethren were awakening to the dire consequences of atomic power-as well as the fact that henceforth science and politics were inextricably intertwined. It was, as Feldman notes, the end of innocence in science.Taking these historic meetings as his starting point, Feldman sketches the lives and contributions of the four friends, colleagues, and rivals-especially Einstein, innately self-confident but frustrated in his attempt to come up with a unified theory, and the aristocratic but self-doubting Lord Russell. In a final section, Feldman also discusses the roles of J. Robert Oppenheimer and his German counterpart, Werner Heisenberg. Though neither was present at any of these meetings, they both cast long shadows over 112 Mercer Street during that cold winter of 1943-44.

13 Dreams Freud Never Had: A New Mind Science

13 Dreams Freud Never Had: A New Mind Science

$5.25

Praise for 13 Dreams Freud Never Had As 13 Dreams demonstrates, J. Allan Hobson is gifted with both an intimate, first-hand knowledge of the brain s workings and a powerful literary imagination, qualities that make him one of the finest living practitioners and explicators of modern neuroscience. –John Horgan, author of The End of Science, The Undiscovered Mind, and Rational Mysticism Allan Hobson has written a remarkable first-a kind of autobiography literally woven out of dreams. From the giant lobster brain to disembodied kisses, from neural labyrinths to opaline Harvard stairways, he makes you turn page after page in anticipation of what he will dream up next, and what he will reveal about his life. In the process, you will partake of a great scientist s journey of self-discovery. And you will learn, pace Freud, what dreams really have to say about us. A unique and gripping book, extraordinarily honest and human. –Giulio Tononi, M.D., Ph.D., University of Wisconsin-Madison, author of A Universe of Consciousness: How Matter Becomes Imagination Allan Hobson has been a distinguished pioneer in the physiological investigation of dreaming. But the meaning of a dream, as he knows, is not the same thing as its function for the brain. In this lively, candid, refreshingly autobiographical book, Hobson shows that dreams possess emotional and ideational content of a straightforward, transparent kind. With 13 Dreams Freud Never Had, dream interpretation is wrested from the deep-theoretical experts and handed back to the only qualified authority-the dreamer him or herself. –Frederick Crews, principal author of The Memory Wars: Freud s Legacy inDispute What if Freud were still alive today and could rely on current neuroscience to construct a theory of dreams in lieu of his stillborn 1895 Project? Hobson tells us intriguingly why, nowadays, Freud would discard the disguise–censorship model along with his erstwhile wish–monopoly of

Excerpt: The Crypt School, Gloucester – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia The Crypt School has been awarded an ‘Artsmark’ Award by the Arts Council of England for the quality of provision in creative and performing arts (i.e. music, drama and art itself). In 2003, the school was granted Specialist Status in Science. It remains the only school in Gloucester with this distinction. This award was, in part, awarded in recognition of the quality of science provision at the school – it remains one of a very select group of schools which teaches all of the sciences in depth as separate subjects. In 2009, The Crypt School was further designated as a Specialist Language College, this status will become active as of the 2009/2010 academic year. At the end of every academic year, usually on the second Thursday of July, pupils, staff and former Cryptians gather at Gloucester Cathedral for Founders Day, a day when the school remembers its past and how the school was founded. The Headmaster of the school pays the Rector of St Mary De Crypt Church a quit rent of one red rose. There are four school houses; Whitefield, Moore, Brown and Henley, named after notable former students. In the 1950s and 1960s,the Crypt gained a reputation for the quality of its Shakespearean productions. The plays were directed by Charles Lepper, English teacher at the Crypt, and former RSC actor. Lepper’s last production at the Crypt was “Much Ado About Nothing” in 1966. 1789: The Long and the Short of It

1789: The Long and the Short of It

$118.74

Twelve essays by as many scholars reconsider the French Revolution in the long term and the short term, examining both the immediate events of 1789 and their long shadow over other countries and times, including our own. Some chapters focus on the Paris experience, others give a glimpse of the Revolution in the provinces or beyond the borders of France itself. To determine what it achieved, what it meant, and what it continues to mean, the scope of the study must include history and art, science and literature, Switzerland, England, Germany, Russia, Napoleon’s Europe and Mitterand’s. These essays originated as public lectures in the University of Sheffield, and retain much of their original liveliness and broad appeal. From a variety of vantage points they view a crucial moment in post-Renaissance history, and gauge how the light of that moment shines in our own time.

Shelley started writing the story when she was 18 and the novel was published when she was 19. The first edition was published anonymously in London in 1818. Shelley’s name appears on the second edition, published in France. The title of the novel refers to a scientist, Victor Frankenstein, who learns how to create life and creates a being in the likeness of man, but larger than average and more powerful. In popular culture, people have tended incorrectly to refer to the monster as “Frankenstein”. Frankenstein is infused with some elements of the Gothic novel and the Romantic movement, and is also considered to be one of the earliest examples of science fiction. It was also a warning against the expansion of modern man in the Industrial Revolution, alluded to in the novel’s subtitle, The Modern Prometheus. The story has had an influence across literature and popular culture and spawned a complete genre of
