Group Work
Emergence Of Social Work And Social Work At Present by Susan Mathisen
Social work is all about helping disadvantaged communities, families, groups, and individuals, this help is provided to the people by creating such conditions which boost the social functioning, and put a stop on breakdowns. Social work is actually a profession in which social workers help disadvantaged people to adopt the values and norms of the society by reshaping or modifying the salient features of the social system.
It emerged as a profession because of the initial efforts of philanthropic groups, and churches to eliminate poverty, to provide religious comforts to the poor, promote self-control, improve economy, to take care of children, and aged ones, and to correct the criminals. Due to the emergence of this profession, several orphanages and home for elder people came into existence, whose aim was to ease out or provide comfort to the disadvantaged. Aid is provided to the deserving families, groups, and individuals in order to restore their lives for themselves and for community in this charitable profession.
Group of people or individuals involved in this profession are expected to help people by reshaping or modifying the social conditions of people and for this, they acquire a specialized training. The training not only enhances the social competence, but also guides the workers to assist people in adjusting the badly effected social and economic life because of family conflicts, personal conflicts, social disorganization, illness, and poverty. Workers not only formulate the social welfare strategies, but also conduct several preventive programs according to the need of hour.
At present, social work is conducted with three methods, which are:
1. Case Work
2. Group Work
3. Community Organization
In case work method, a specific individual is assisted, who is needy, physically, or mentally unfit, or is socially handicapped. Socially handicapped are those who are homeless, unemployed, alcohol addict, drug addicted, or suffering from broken family. Social workers first understand the psychology and sociology of the individuals, and then get their problems diagnosed with the help of physicians, or psychiatrists and provide the solution accordingly.
Group work method is represented by social settlements, gymnasiums, playgrounds, and classrooms where handicrafts are taught. The socially handicapped members of community are usually called at such places for conducting some productive activities. For this purpose, help and services of volunteers are availed for conducting poverty projects for disadvantaged people.
Whereas community organizations promote welfare work with the help and support of private as well as public agencies by raising and administrating funds for disadvantaged communities.

Work $38.24 Shout Out Louds’ third album is another shift in sound for the band. After its first album, the reckless and energetic Howl Howl Gaff Gaff, the band moved to a much heavier, gloomier feel on the follow-up, Our Ill Wills. Both approaches were successful and led to albums that packed a powerful emotional punch. For 2010’s Work, the band decided to head to America to record with Phil Ek (Fleet Foxes, the Shins) and also chose to strip away the extra elements from its sound and keep things simple. It’s a wise decision in some respects, because Our Ills Wills was at times quite overwrought and pushed right to the edge of being too gloomy and dramatic. Here the lyrical mood is lighter and less desperate; it only makes sense that the music should match that. To that end, there are less layers of sound on Work; the synths have been replaced by pianos, the drums and bass are clear and punchy, the guitars are often acoustic, and the strings and horns are used sparingly. This push for simplicity could have been a disaster leading to a boring record that tossed away the things that made Shout Out Louds so interesting to begin with, like their reckless energy, the drama and desperation that coursed through their blood, or vocalist Adam Olenius’ yearning vocals. Fortunately, while the tempos may be slower, the sound less cluttered, and the approach more measured, the songs are still very good, the bandmembers (and Ek) pay close attention to crafting dynamic arrangements, and Olenius delivers the emotional goods exactly as expected. “Fall Hard,” “Throwing Stones,” and “Show Me Something New” are as catchy and insistent as anything from their first album; “Too Late Too Slow” and “Play the Game” are as majestic and shattering as anything from Our Ill Wills. Taken as a whole, Work is just as engaging and powerful as their previous output and demonstrates no drop-off in quality at all. Super Group $26.39 Just how long can someone in rock & roll go on being naïve? Naoko Yamano has been the guitarist, lead vocalist, and principle songwriter with Shonen Knife since 1981, and more than 25 years after recording the band’s debut album, she’s still writing the same kind of songs she did when she was 21, reveling in the joys of food, feeding animals at the park, playing music, and various goofy sci-fi scenarios. Shonen Knife sound like they’ve learned more than a few tricks over the years on 2009’s Super Group — Yamano’s guitar work is much more confident and technically precise than it was back in the day, and the rhythm section of Ritsuko Taneda on bass and Etsuko Nakanishi on drums (who respectively joined the group in 2006 and 2005) is simple but right on the money. Put the three together and Shonen Knife sound like a sweetly enthusiastic pop-punk combo, not unlike the Ramones as interpreted by a bunch of hipper-than-average Girl Scouts, which is just what the world has come to expect of this band. But it seems curious that Yamano doesn’t sing with much more expertise than she does after fronting a band for so long, and while only a fool would expect her to suddenly write lyrics like Leonard Cohen, the style that seemed charmingly childlike in the early ’80s appears curiously willful and a bit stunted as Yamano’s fiftieth birthday looms on the horizon. On the surface, Super Group sounds just as good (though not notably better) than the albums that won Shonen Knife a cult following back in the ’80s. But the energy and goofball charm that were so much a part of what made them memorable aren’t what they used to be, and what once was heartfelt now plays like the work of a writer following a format instead of a gal sharing her candy-colored dreams to the world. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi Performers: Roman Yumeno – Guitar |

And His Group $11.98 Arturo Sandoval & His Group contains 11 songs which take the listener on an instrumental pop/jazz journey that is completely satisfying and full of musical surprises. The close to seven minutes of “Para Empezar a Vivir” is pure ’80s lounge while “Cuatro Gigantes” starts off with traditional Latin sounds before veering off into Weather Report territory. The cover of Jennings/Kerr’s “Yo Nunca Volveré a Amar de Esta Manera” has Sandoval scorching the horn in parts; it’s far more intrusive than Dionne Warwick’s beautiful rendition of her Top Five 1979 hit “I’ll Never Love This Way Again.” At certain points, Sandoval intentionally tears into the melody while the band has some fun with the rhythm, the ending disintegrating into mayhem and one wondering if some satire isn’t going on. The packaging is exquisite, including a 20-page booklet — ten pages in English; ten in Spanish — with photos and extensive credits. Helio Orovio’s liner notes are spot on and make for great reading while “Variaciones Para una Mazurca de Chopin” plays in the background, taking a turn into the mysterious and exotic, sounds that shimmer inside a beautiful undercurrent. There’s a lot to take in on this single disc and even after repeated spins it holds plenty of secrets, a work of art containing ideas that drift in and out before you realize how quickly the dimensions keep shifting. It is a group effort with Sandoval giving his bandmates plenty of space to showcase their skills, especially on their total musical revision of Gershwin’s “Summertime.” “Sábado 14″ is one of only two Arturo Sandoval originals, taking bits of “Moon River” and ’80s disco with perhaps a dash of Stevie Wonder. Night Group $12.78 Based out of Halifax and featuring members of the Burdocks, Dog Day has a tight, loud and energetic vibe going on during the short but terribly sweet “Lydia” which sounds like a perfect melding of Placebo and the Velvet Underground. Singer Seth Smith has a great voice for these angular, urgent rock tunes, especially on “End of the World” that would fit just as well on an album by the Smiths as it would Forward Russia. And the album seems to get better with each song, with “Oh Dead Life” sparkling as if it was to be included on a tribute album to the Cure. This blueprint is revisited again on the crisply delivered “Sleeping, Waiting.” Even when Dog Day slows things down with the lighter, dance-rock, synth-tinged ditty “Know Who You Are” it still easily shines. Another highlight is “Vow” which seems to hit another gear while being framed around the work of Nancy Urich and drummer Casey Spidle. Perhaps the biggest disappointment might be “Gayhorse” that doesn’t quite live up to expectations. It’s also the most experimental effort on the record. Thankfully, it’s the exception to the rule as Dog Day return to form during the hook-filled title track. Concerto for Group and Orchestra $22.36 Back in 1970, it seemed as though any British group that could was starting to utilize classical elements in their work — for some, like ELP, that meant quoting from the classics as often and loudly as possible, while for others, like Yes, it meant incorporating classical structures into their albums and songs. Deep Purple, at the behest of keyboardman Jon Lord, fell briefly into the camp of this offshoot of early progressive rock with the Concerto for Group and Orchestra. For most fans, the album represented the nadir of the classic (i.e., post-Rod Evans) group: minutes of orchestral meandering lead into some perfectly good hard rock jamming by the band, but the trip is almost not worth the effort. Ritchie Blackmore sounds great and plays his heart out, and you can tell this band is going to go somewhere, just by virtue of the energy that they put into these extended pieces. The classical influences mostly seem drawn from movie music composers Dimitri Tiomkin and Franz Waxman (and Elmer Bernstein), with some nods to Rachmaninoff, Sibelius, and Mahler, and they rather just lay there. Buried in the middle of the second movement is a perfectly good song, but you’ve got to get to it through eight minutes of orchestral noodling on either side. The third movement is almost bracing enough to make up for the flaws of the other two, though by itself, it wouldn’t make the CD worthwhile — Pink Floyd proved far more adept at mixing group and orchestra, and making long, slow, lugubrious pieces interesting. As a bonus, however, the producers have added a pair of hard rock numbers by the group alone, “Wring That Neck” and “Child in Time,” that were played at the same concert. Super Group [Bonus Track] $15.18 Just how long can someone in rock & roll go on being naïve? Naoko Yamano has been the guitarist, lead vocalist, and principle songwriter with Shonen Knife since 1981, and more than 25 years after recording the band’s debut album, she’s still writing the same kind of songs she did when she was 21, reveling in the joys of food, feeding animals at the park, playing music, and various goofy sci-fi scenarios. Shonen Knife sound like they’ve learned more than a few tricks over the years on 2009’s Super Group — Yamano’s guitar work is much more confident and technically precise than it was back in the day, and the rhythm section of Ritsuko Taneda on bass and Etsuko Nakanishi on drums (who respectively joined the group in 2006 and 2005) is simple but right on the money. Put the three together and Shonen Knife sound like a sweetly enthusiastic pop-punk combo, not unlike the Ramones as interpreted by a bunch of hipper-than-average Girl Scouts, which is just what the world has come to expect of this band. But it seems curious that Yamano doesn’t sing with much more expertise than she does after fronting a band for so long, and while only a fool would expect her to suddenly write lyrics like Leonard Cohen, the style that seemed charmingly childlike in the early ’80s appears curiously willful and a bit stunted as Yamano’s fiftieth birthday looms on the horizon. On the surface, Super Group sounds just as good (though not notably better) than the albums that won Shonen Knife a cult following back in the ’80s. But the energy and goofball charm that were so much a part of what made them memorable aren’t what they used to be, and what once was heartfelt now plays like the work of a writer following a format instead of a gal sharing her candy-colored dreams to the world.
